Nice tonality, interesting contrast between the flowing water and the rock. The
composition doesn't work for me however, not abstract enough, or too
abstract for
the subject matter. I also think that there should be more, either another
stone
or more water in the frame.

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2067634
I think this is the best of the lot, but I would have gone with a tighter
crop. Simply removing the left 25% of the frame gets rid of the distracting
out of focus arm in the foreground and draws you into the scene.

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2075325
I like this shot, nicely balanced, maybe too balanced. The overall image
gives me a feeling of peace, although I your second shot better. It's always
tricky to split a frame into quarters like this but with the Sun slightly off
center it works for me.

The Scanwit is a 35mm film scanner.

I did not operate the Nikon scanner. The fellow who performed the
scan for me is a seasoned B&W photographer, processor, and wet printer.

It's a rainbow. When I told my wife I had a rainbow image in B&W, she
derisively laughed, and said it would "just be gas!" After she saw it,
she asked for a print to give to a friend as a gift!

Did you scan the negs on the Nikon scanner,

Hi.
I have,as do several others here,the Epson 2450(others have the 3200)and i find that
35mm
scans,B&W or colour seem just a bit off too.My 6x7 scans are much much better.
I use mostly Tmax developer with times taken from the Kodak or Ilford sites.
I use Vuescan mostly and Silverfast sometimes.I have the version taht came with the
scanner (5.5)and
i dont think it has all the tools, from what i gather from their website.I find my best
B&W
results from
Vuescan but again not as good as the wet print,as others i'm sure will mention in

Old Tri-X in ID-11, Nikon 4000 something scanner @ 4000dpi:

This file is straight from the scanner other than conversion
to JPEG and reduced size. No manipulation at all, no
sharpening ... nada!

Would be happy to send you a section of the 20mb file for
closer examination.

I also get good results with APX 100 in Rodinal 1:100.
Expose film @ 50 - 64 EI, develop for about 15 minutes,
agitate for 5 seconds/two tumbles every minute.

Regarding recent critique request, and scanning questions

2004-01-28 Thread Rothman, Aric
Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to my request
for critiques. Usually, when I ask friends for comment on my work,
they tend to not be very critical. I will try some of the suggested
image manipulation and report on the results.

Here's another, fresh off the scanner...

http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2085362&size=lg

...which leads to my next question.

I have a great deal of difficulty with lack of sharpness and grain,
especially when scanning B&W, which is my preferred medium. Oddly,
the grain seems to have a less objectionable appearance (at least
to me) with high speed emulsion/developer combos...

(Old Tri-X @ 1600 ASA in Diafine)
http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=316146
http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=317510&size=lg

than with my typical low speed choice (APX 100 in Rodinal).
In an effort to reduce grain, I developed a batch of APX 100 rolls
in HC110B, hoping the faster development would lessen the grain,
but I still get an unpleasant mottled grain look, as in the
rainbow image (I used Neat Image to clean up the mottled look,
but it is still evident).

I thought my scanner might be to blame. Admittedly a cheapo
(Scanwit 2720S), I scanned some negatives with the local
camera shops Nikon scanner and got similar results.

I am using Vuescan. What combinations of film/developer/scanner
settings are yielding go B&W results for folks here?

Re: Critique request

2001-11-22 Thread Bill Sullivan

Delano,

If it's not too late to reply to your request, I think you need to thank the
person who chose the boy's shirt for the day. The dark brown goes perfectly
with the rest of your good photograph. It helps make it, in other words.
Tone-wise, you've got a plain if simple photo with sepia tones on the
child's face, a dark brown background with blurry spots that don't compete
for attention (on my monitor, at least), and the dark brown shirt. Hey, it's
got yellow stripes!

When you said you wanted a critique, I assume you wanted something slightly
more thoughtful than the words in a Chinese fortune cookie. Let me try. The
things I notice are that you chose a high angle and you aren't giving us any
clues as to what the boy is looking at. The fact that I noticed the angle is
high does not mean you should have taken it at a lower angle. I just noticed
the angle was high, and that's FWIW.

As for the lack of clues as to what has the boy's attention, if you were to
provide clues you would have a different and far less simple picture.
Besides, nowhere is it written that poetry and photographs must tell you
everthing. You've taken a lovely picture of a child in one of those
delicious moments when he is opening his mind to a cause of wonder. He looks
to me as if he is trying to figure out how to use whatever information he is
getting, and I enjoy looking at your photo and creating my own story of what
the boy is thinking.

The Pentax 50mm f1.7 SMC-M is one of four Pentax lenses that I own. It came
with the first Pentax I bought, an ME-Super, over 20 years ago, and I love
it, especially in low light. I don't know the film you used (Ilford 3200)
but I am impressed with the color saturation of so fast a film. It does look
look like you've got some hot spots especially on his cheek, but when you
are wearing the perfect shirt for the occasion, what's a few extra Kelvins
among friends?

I hope this boy will get a copy of his photo that he can carry with him
through his life, and that he will from time to time look at it and be
reminded of his childhood and how wonderful it was and is to be learning
things and adding to his experience.

Thanks, Anand. It was taken in a mini-theatre at the Texas Visitor's Center

lighting was from the TV and the open doorway so I think I was quite lucky
with the way lighting worked.
