Re: DA 16-45 f/4 lens

2010-12-09 Thread Thibouille
David, I wille echo what others already said.
The 16-45 is a very fine lens, better than reviews will make you believe it is.

And yes, the 50-135 is a slow AF lens, but what a hell of an IQ :o
Simply stellar !

2010/12/4 David Mann d...@multisport.net.nz:
I just noticed the camera shop's ad also has this lens on special (not the
16-50 f/2.8 unfortunately).  What's the group's consensus on this one?  It
might be a bad assumption that PDML can agree on anything, but it's worth a
 try.

 Cheers,
 Dave

As I might have said last time this lens got a mention, on my trip to Egypt
a couple of years ago more than 70% of my shots were with it. Sharp, not

David, though - not a deal-breaker.

I've read the reviews and either I have a really good copy, or I'm daft, but
I've found the lens to be very capable and the perfect wide to medium lens
for me. It's sharp wide open. It takes about 85-90% of the pictures that I
shoot.

The only problem that I've had is that the lens hood detents on the hood
bayonet have worn down. It makes the hood loose, but that is a minor issue.

Re: DA 16-45 f/4 lens

2010-12-05 Thread Dario Bonazza
I have owned one since they first came out and I'm extremely happy with its
IQ. It's been by far my most used lens for my first 6 years of digital
photography, now replaced by the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8/4 HSM thanks its longer
reach and silent operation.
Another important plus of the 16-45 is there are no faulty samples around,
as it happens so often with the DA* 16-50 f/2.8. That was confirmed by the
Pentax service for Italy, where a technician once told me that the 16-45/4
is the most reliable Pentax lens in recent years, with a zero-fault score.
They never get any 16-45/4 back from unhappy purchasers.

The only problem can be it only reaches 45mm, but that's hardly a surprise
;-)

I owned and used this lens before I bought the 16-50. The image quality is very
good. The build quality leaves something to be desired. It extends as it's
zoomed toward the wide end, and that extension feels a bit sloppy. But the
performance was always quite nice. More barrel distortion than its pricier
sibling, but that's to be expected.

Re: DA 16-45 f/4 lens

2010-12-04 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Dave: I think the DA 16-45 lens is a great lens for the money. For over
a year now, I've been shooting a construction project and I use the 16-45
the DA* 50-135mm on two camera bodies(originally started with K20/K10D, but
now shoot with K7 and K20D). The shots below were taken with the 16-45 at
high ISOs, slow shutter speeds the K20D was mounted on a tripod. I most
definitely recommend this lens.

Here are some recent shots with the K7 and the DA 16-45mm.

I did a theater shoot used the 16-45. I thought the lens performed well
with the K20D.

As to the DA* 50-135mm f2.8, well, it's a gem. Absolutely love it.
Cheers, Christine

I just noticed the camera shop's ad also has this lens on special (not the
16-50 f/2.8 unfortunately). What's the group's consensus on this one? It
might be a bad assumption that PDML can agree on anything, but it's worth a
try.

Cheers,

Re: DA 16-45 f/4 lens

2010-12-04 Thread Boris Liberman
I agree with Christine. When I was in Chicago Bob S allowed me to use
his 16-45/4 and it was really excellent experience - both ergonomics and
IQ.

Unless you /really/ need that extra stop of DA* 16-50, DA 16-45/4.0 is a
gem of a lens.

Re: DA 16-45 f/4 lens

2010-12-04 Thread Theodore Beilby
This lens is my go to when the 21mm isn't wide enough. I originally got it to
replace the FAJ 18-35 kit lens that came on my *istD. Was a reasonably priced
upgrade to that lens. It has fairly good IQ and the constant f4 is nice. True
it
is a little short on the long end but was better on both ends than the 18-35
(which I think is an underrated lens itself.)

love it, take most of my photos with it; it was a great improvement over
the 18-55 i started with; i have used it in mist and light rain numerous
times, and given it quite a few knocks (usually against the lens hood)
without mishap; i feel i can use it in rougher conditions than i'd want
to with a super premium lens

i've used the 1:4 macro quite a lot too (i suspect it is more like
1:3.5 based on my tests), though it has been superseded for serious
close-ups by a bargain sigma 105 macro

I heard back from the camera shop, they sold that one just before closing time
yesterday :(

They've offered to honour the price on the 16-45 for me so I'll try and sneak a
long lunch break tomorrow to check it out.

One thing to remember: the 16-45 is not weather sealed. I don't know if
that's a deal breaker for ya, though. Today I shot in the snow with the
50-135--kit came home soaked; I wouldn't be able to do that with the 16-45
though. Cheers, christine

Re: DA 16-45 f/4 lens

2010-12-04 Thread David Parsons
I've read the reviews and either I have a really good copy, or I'm
daft, but I've found the lens to be very capable and the perfect wide
to medium lens for me. It's sharp wide open. It takes about 85-90%
of the pictures that I shoot.

The only problem that I've had is that the lens hood detents on the
hood bayonet have worn down. It makes the hood loose, but that is a
minor issue.

Thanks for the tip. I went to the camera shop after watching a bike race in
town and bought one. I've only made a few test photos so far, in flat light.
I'll give it more of a workout when I get the chance.

The guys in the shop said the importer may have more of the 50-135 available so
I may still be able to get the special price. I'll find that out tomorrow,
hopefully the prospect of making another sale will motivate them. Then I'll
have to start thinking about thinning out my primes :(

Cheers,
Dave
