Lasse, thanks for the comments. I left the photo unretouched in spirit of
the synchronicity theme. I do agree some cropping and an exposure change
would have helped.

Wes Montgomery is a good choice! I think, however, that based on my poor
effort for the January PUG, Wes' song Sack O'Woe recorded with Cannonball
Adderly would be choice of soundtrack.

Thanks again, and Happy New Year to you!

Dec PUG comments: Chris N.

2001-12-31 Thread Lasse Karlsson

Sorry Chris and all for being this late in commenting.

(I was also assigned to comment on Andy Harbin's photo. However, no
photo by Andy could I find in the December gallery.)

Synchronous Willow by Chris Niesmertelny,

First thought: The picture appears almost too small on my monitor. I
think it may have lessened the impact of the photo.

The motif is a classic one (a (willow) tree mirroring itself in the
water) and as such, in it's play with symmetry, it's kind of nice to
look at and lends itself well for decorative use.
However, in this particular picture, the light conditions are not ideal
(at least not to my eye), why some of the impact gets lost in the rather
murky bottom part of the picture. (I realize that the time frame allowed
by the Synchronity theme was limited.) Maybe the not too well defined
structure or pattern of the leaves has something to do with it too. I
might have wanted to do some cropping to the left side and the bottom
part of the photo.
(What I am now aiming at, is that murkish and not too well defined
structure or pattern in itself does not necessarily imply any lesser
success of a picture. It's only a question of exactly how it is
presented. (And, as you can see, I don't have any definitive answers or
suggestions...) ).
I enjoyed watching the photo.
It also makes me want to listen to (jazz guitar player) Wes Montgomery's
take on the song Willow Weep For Me. (In fact I think I'm going to
play it right now. Been years since I heard it last.)

I feel something strange about this shot. The
composition isn’t clear for me - the image isn’t
mirrored in the water as one could expect, and the
lighting is OK but not outstanding. But it has a nice,

ClockWorks - Bill Peifer

There have been occasions where I have shown my wife a photo that I
have taken to get her impression and she says What's that?.
Obviously, since I took the photo, I know exactly what it is. But for
her, she has no idea, because it is an unfamiliar subject. Bill's
Clockworks has the same effect on me. Without the title and
explanation, I would really be lost trying to figure out just exactly
what I am looking at. Ironically, my wife know what it was at first
glance before seeing the title.

I have looked at this image for awhile and it is just too abstract
feeling for me. It comes across as more of a study shot while working
with the equipment and lighting and experimenting with the subject. I
must say that the flash worked out pretty well, in not blowing out
those reflective surfaces.

Berries - William Robb

There are some things that work for me here and some things that don't
work quite as well.

Things I like - The strong colors - the reds, greens and blues work
together to make the berries really stand out. DOF - Good compromise
between bringing the berries to our attention but not blurring the
background so badly as to not recognize general shapes and patterns.

Things I don't like - The subject it too dead center. I'm not quite
sure how to describe it, but it feels like there should be something
else to help accentuate the subject - positioning, size or something.
There is a distracting dark vertical object on the right side that I
notice too much.

All that said, I like the image. It is something that I would enjoy
working with. I don't have any ivy or berries around like that. Many
times these common items go unnoticed. William has exhibited an
awareness of his surroundings that will net him many fine photos.

Jaume,

being a little late with reply, thanks for your comment. I'm no big fan of
macro either, but decided to try out new glass in my collection, SMC
Takumar 28/3,5 which goes a little beyond 1:1 when reversed. I took
several shots of that ashtray but decided for this one exactly because
of the texture it shows. I like the definition as Moon in Warhol's manner
too. Thanks. As for other experiments, I took some night portraits at
candle light but the results were to contrasty since I used Ilford HP5 at
3200 ASA which pushed the contrast to much. As well there were some
close-up shots of CD collection in the rack with reversed M 50/1.7 that I
like but I should clean CDs more carefully since there was some
distracting dust visible. I might use one of them for the PUG some day.

Thanks again, Matjaz

Hi, Jaume,

Thanks for taking the time to critique my image this month. All of your
criticisms were and are valid. I knew it wasn't a particularly good
photograph when I submitted it, but of the 15 or 20 that I took of the
building and it's sign (different angles and distances, bracketing like
mad), I opted for that one.

I think what I should have done was to scout out what I was going to do
before I left the house with my camera, but I didn't. I thought I'd try
spontaneity, and just leave the house and see what comes up. Didn't
work too well this time! ;-)

Thanks again.

MX, Dec PUG

2001-12-10 Thread Trish Johnson

MX - Have just aquired a nice MX for a song. Everything seems to be ok except
that the more I used it, the more the viewfinder looked like the bottom of an
ashtray. I took the lens off and a heap of black foam fell out. It's not
sticky, but was obviously there for a reason. Can this be repaired?? Does it
need to be repaired. The only other problem is the little black plastic bit
that covers the centre of the self timer lever is missing. The camera came
with a M200/4 M35/2 and M50/1.4. I suspect it's all been kept oin the boot
(trunk) of a car because the lens cases are very cracked and dry. Are they
leather?? I can't make out if they are or not. If they were leather I'd put a
little treatment on the cases to stop further deterioration.

I now have a dilemma. Which 35/2 to rid myself of. I have the K and M
versions. Someone decide for me please!

Speaking of ashtrays, I simply cannot stop looking at Caught in the Glass by
Matjaz Osojnik. Every time I open the PUG page, I need to look at this again.
It looks like the moon. Congratulations Matjaz.

2001-12-10 Thread Alan Chan

Those are aging form which must be replaced. Any repair shops can do the job
(suppose they knew what they were doing). Quite possible those form on the
camera back have to be replaced too. Those aren't leather, but leatherette.
If you are interested in replacing them yourself, check out
http://www.micro-tools.com/Merchant2/restore.htm. Just don't let those aging
form to stick on the focus screen for too long or there might be
inreversable damage. Don't try to wipe the screen with anything either, use
a blower.

except
that the more I used it, the more the viewfinder looked like the bottom of
an

sticky, but was obviously there for a reason. Can this be repaired?? Does
it
need to be repaired. The only other problem is the little black plastic

that covers the centre of the self timer lever is missing. The camera came
with a M200/4 M35/2 and M50/1.4. I suspect it's all been kept oin the boot

they
leather?? I can't make out if they are or not. If they were leather I'd put
a
little treatment on the cases to stop further deterioration.

I now have a dilemma. Which 35/2 to rid myself of. I have the K and M

When I got my first SLR, an MX the first thing I did is tried to clean it
with compressed air. It virtually destroyed the foam :)) Since then the
camera has been working fine. Its main purpose (correct me if I'm wrong)
is to chuisson the mirror when it flaps up. It also seals some light.
But it is rare to see any camera that has the foam intact. Especially
cameras as old as MXs. Get it replaced if someone takes the camera apart

Cases get roughed up. If they still serve the purpose of protecting your

LeviL,

The MX was extraordinarily cheap to purchase, as in the seller requested that
I SING a SONG as payment for it. (Have you ever heard of Singing For Your
Supper? It is another old colloquial phrase.)

Hi Levi,
LPM is the resolving power of a lens expressed in Lines Per
Millimeter. Higher is better... :)

According to what I've heard, the K 35/2 is better (dunno how
much) than the M 35/2, but it's heavy and huge.
I have the K one and I love it. It's a great lens. Never had the
chance to touch the M.

I would guess the mirror bumper foam is rotted away. Should be a fairly
cheap fix at a local camera repair shop. The light seal foam in the back
should probably be replaced at the same time as it is probably in the same
condition.

Dec PUG - William Robb, Cotty, Stan Halpin

These were the three piccies that most caught my eye this time round:

William Robb - Berries
Hard to believe these colours occur naturally, and the background perfectly
complements the subject. The rock in the top left corner is a tad
distracting.

Cotty - Stefan Asleep, 2001
Simply brilliant. Must get an LX. Anyone fancy swapping one for an MV1? I'll
pay shipping. Just a beautiful photograph.

Stan Halpin - Yellow Flower - Yellow Bug
I don't usually go for flower shots, but I love the lighting on this one.

I suppose you could call this concise, but work has hotted up lately so PDML
reading and writing time is impaired!

Jaume Lahuerta - The Tower and the (Ghost) Church - Wonderful nighttime
cloud
effects over the city and the tower keeps attracting my attention.

Sergey SHP - St. Petersburg, City Centre - So was it nighttime in Poland and
broad daylight in St. Petersburg, or is that moonlight?

Bill Piefer - Clockworks - simple subject, well executed

Stan Halpin - Yellow Flower - Yellow Bug - I like the flower and the bug
makes it all that much better. Do you think the Portra 160 NC is muting the
colors?

Rodger Whitlock - A Synchro-Tomato - The fuzzy stuff threw me off at first,
then drew me into the photo. You can almost feel the warmth of the
sunshine.

Christian Skofteland - Dusk Watch - I like the silouettes and the color, but
you've got to lose the CrappyScan scanner.

William Robb - Berries - Very vibrant colors and great contrast between the
blue berries and the red stems. What kind of Ivy is that?

Cotty - Stefan Asleep, 2001 - Sell this photo to a stock agency! It is a
wonderfully lit and exposed example of a sleeping child. He will forgive
you
for taking the photo when he as kids of his own. g

Chris Niemertelny - Synchronous Willow - Why do I keep on coming back to
look
at this photo again and again. It is deceptively simple yet attractive.

excellent.

2001-12-02 Thread Stan Halpin

Bob - thanks for the comments. There were several bugs flying around among
the various flowers. At first I tried to follow the bugs, then gave up and
just framed the flower I wanted and waited for the bug to come to me.

I think the color is about right. I forgot to mention that I had a Tiffen
enhancing filter on the lens - the combination of the neutral-to-subdued
Portra film plus the filter seems to produce pretty accurate, slightly
saturated, colors. I know it would have been much brighter with Kodak Gold
or one of the Fuji films, but this is late September after all and most
natural colors are a bit muted . . .

I am not totally happy with Portra as a general purpose film, but it does
have the advantages that (a) my local store consistently has it in stock,
and (b) I can get the same film for both 35mm and 645.

vibrant, though not quite as bright as the picture suggests.
Royal 200 is a pretty over saturated film.
