OK I've found the front-panel procedure. I thought I had it in a
text file but it turns out to be on paper in my filing cabinet so
I'll transcribe it with slight editing. Note that this is for the
2100 / 2200 and may or may not work for other models.

1. Turn off the printer power and unplug the power cord from the
wall. Disconnect the computer interface cable at the back of the
printer.

2. After one minute reattach the power plug to the wall, but don't
reattach the computer cable.

3. Hold down the ROLL and the PAPER ADVANCE buttons simultaneously.

4. Turn the printer on [while holding those buttons down]. After 2
blinks, all the ink lights come on and you can release the buttons.

5. Press and hold the ROLL button for 10 seconds.

6. Release the ROLL button and the printer will initialise, which
resets the waste ink pad counter.

7, Once initialisation is complete, turn the printer power off.

8. Reconnect the interface cable.

In addition to the above procedure it's a good idea to clean the
waste ink pad. I had to do this with my printer as the little pad
that caps the head was becoming saturated and was not draining
properly into the larger pad in the base of the printer, resulting in
smudges across my prints. The 2100 / 2200 has to be disassembled to
get to the big pads, unlike the larger models which have user-
removable trays.

If you just want to clean the little pad that sits under the head,
just yank the power plug out while the head is away from its "parked"
position (either during a test print, during initialisation or
whatever). After this you can push the head further out of the way
by hand if necessary, and you now have access to the pad.

The pad can be removed for easier cleaning but IIRC it's in pretty
tight and is quite fiddly to get out. When you're done just plug the
printer back in and turn it on - it'll sort itself out.

HTH,

- Dave

I thought I had that utility somewhere on my system. But apparently no
longer. It will not only reset the cleaning pad count, but the ink count
too, so you can use all the ink in your cartridges. If you do that you
need to watch it so you replace them as soon as they start skipping.
That means you have to keep a set of fresh cartridges on hand.

Anyway, you can google "epson ink utility" and find a bunch of such
programs.

David, if you ever find something on how to reset the counter please post
here. My 220 is doing the same thing, although I am still able to print so
far. Eventually it will refuse, I guess.
In the meantime I do have the 1800 and it is almost new.
I did a quick look on the web and only found places that would sell you
epson manuals, but no source for changing the counter or a source for parts.

This was my first thought as well, as I've had mine do the same thing.

I managed to disassemble mine enough to get at the ink pads, then I
took them out and gave them a good rinse and let them dry. Getting
the printer apart was a bit of a pain - the pads aren't designed to
be user-accessible unlike the larger printers.

You can reset the printer's ink count either by downloading a small
program, or there's a sequence of front-panel buttons you can use.
Unfortunately I've forgotten it but it shouldn't be too hard to find
on the net :)

Either that or you can save yourself the headaches and take it in to
a service agent.

Next time mine requires this I'll probably drill a little hole under
the waste-ink hose and raise the printer by enough to put a little
tray underneath with a sponge in it.

Does the 2200 have a maintenance tank or paper cutter?

John, I believe the problem is that the printer thinks the ink
absorption
pads are full and it refuses to print more before they are replaced
(trying
to prevent overflow). These are quite easy to replace. I think you may
even
find the printer service manual pdf floating around the net someplace,
where
you can find the instructions on how to reset the counter and make the
printer know the pads have been replaced.

My Epson Stylus Photo 2200 has decided to go on strike. Most of the
printer's lights are blinking continuously, and the printer status monitor
tells me, "Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life.
Contact your dealer for replacement."

The printer was printing fine just moments before this happened. Does
anyone know a way to get around this stoppage so I can try to continue
printing?

It figures something like this would happen the night I start trying to
print my SF pano for a client. Argh!
