Mike: I'm still trying to confirm if any 3rd party makes a diffuser for this flash (the AF200T)? You said Stofen has suggestions on how to avoid under-exposure? Have you used one of their diffusers on the 200? Again, on the Lumiquest web site, they specifically say they do not have one for the 200. Maybe people still buy them & get them to work somehow? Steve, The tele adaptor is all mechanical, a 1.5x2.5 inch box that slides over the flash tubes. It is about 1.5 inches deep with a flat plastic fresnel lens on the front. It simply focuses the light rays into a more narrow beam. I think it is typically a 135mm focus. I don't think this is what you need for 100mm lens portraits. Something like the wide angle adapter may give you light bounced off the room. I'd try the rubbing alcohol bottle or plastic milk carton as a diffuser. Something to spread that light for a bounce. You should always use the TTL setting on your flash with the Super Program. This measures the light after moving thru your lens and into your camera body. In effect, it knows whether you are using a 100mm or a 24mm lens on the camera and adjusts the output of the flash. With the red and green settings, you measure the light bounced back to the flash body and turn off the flash there... no adjusting for that 100mm lens! These settings are available so you can use the flash with 'dumb' cameras that don't have Thru-The-Lens flash sensors. According to the owner's manual for the AF200T, Pentax did make a wide-angle & a tele adaptor. It would seem that for my use, it would be best to get the tele. Steve, With the AF200T, turn the audio flash confirmation on and verify you are getting TTL when you fire. The AF200T is not as tall as the AF280T and doesn't bounce, so you may see some red eye with longer lenses (85mm+). I'd try a diffuser to see if you can get rid of the harsh look. I'd save the 1/2, 1/4, etc power settings for fill flash outdoors. You should definitely take the flash and Super Program out for some exercise. Regards, Bob S. It does nothing in TTL mode. On Z-1p, flash power can be altered on the camera. In fact there are only two ways you can soften the light of an on camera strobe. All the rest are pretend. e.g. it must work everybody says so, but you can't tell it from the pictures. 1. Is to cause an appreciable amount of the light to bounce around the room. Diffusers like the sto-fen, and Styrofoam cups stuck over the flash head work this way. They cause a huge lost of guide number. But if the room is smallish and the walls and ceiling light colored they work pretty well. 2. Is to make the light source appreciably larger. Umbrellas, soft-boxes, and reflector cards work this way. The also cause a lost of guide number but not as much as the former method. But to be effective at anything other than close distances they have to be rather large. I used an 8x10 inch bounce card for the forsale pics that I had up on my web site at about one foot from the lenses. At ten feet it would be only slightly better than the bare flash. A 3x4 foot soft-box would be rather effective at that distance. Umbrellas fall somewhere between the two. The little reflectors and soft boxes that are sold to amateurs are very effective at making money for the dealers, they do little for your photography. Sometimes you see press photographers with a small bounce card taped to their flash. One such photographer I talked to said he used it so the celebs would know he had taken their picture with out actually affecting the lighting much. Bob: Thanks so much for the reply! That was my second post to the group, but only my first response back. I just checked & yes I do have the AF200T. It seems from past memory (I have not shot with this flash in a while), that the pictures with it were also a little too harsh. Do you use a difuser, as it is only a direct flash, without any tilt? Or, do you adjust the power settings to the 1/2, 1/4, etc. settings? If I rememeber, it seems that I also tended to get quite a few red-eye shots with this flash. Steve, There are several versions of the AF200. Some are AF200S, some are AF200Sa, and some are AF200T. Do you have the AF200T? It is the TTL version and works great with the Super Program. If you don't have the TTL version, that alone is reason enough for buying an AF280T. The AF280T is a modest step up from the AF200T. The Guide Number is 280 vs 200, so that gets you out 40% farther. It also has tilts and swivels for the head, which lets you take advantage of bounce flash. It's only disadvantage is that is nearly as big and heavy as the Super Program body itself. Steve, The first question to ask yourself is what did you change? If they use to turn out fine and now they are overexposing, did you change films, labs or lenses. Or, have you just started to notice that they have always been overexposed. With your 283, you can always lie to it and tell it that you have faster film than you are really using. That way it will kill the flash a bit quicker and drop the exposure a bit.
