Thanks, Alan. For the wildflowers I set the drive mode to medium or slow
speed continuous and try to very smoothly turn the focus ring. High
speed is too fast - to cover the DOF I have to move the focusing ring
too quickly to feel confident that I am covering the range I am trying
to get in focus.

This photo might also be of use:

http://markcassino.com/b2evolution/media/DSCN6186a.jpg

That is my old setup - photo taken in 2006 with my old tripod and I
think an *ist-D. But you can see how the tripod collar rotates - in that
photo the mounting plate is perpendicular to the the bottom of the camera.

An L-bracket would help with the 90 degree turns but it is nice to have
the tripod collar that can rotate into any alignment with the tripod head.

Re: GESO - More Spring Flowers

2015-04-21 Thread Mark C
Wow - they have simplified switching the center post to being mounted
sideways. On the 3021 that I have the process of switching to the side
mount is fairly cumbersome, since you have to unscrew the center post,
reconfigure it to be side mounted, and then screw it back together.

When I broke the old tripod and replaced it with the newer 3021 I did
not initially expect to use the center post at a right angle - with just
the head and no center pose the tripod goes right down to ground level.
But after I tried the sideways mounted center post a few times I came to
rely on it - it adds a lot of flexibility to how the camera and lens
can be positioned.

Thanks Frank. Better than the photos was just the day itself - a few
hours int he lush spring woods. The only people I met were a young
couple, maybe 20, he had a fishing pole in hand and she was just walking
with him to head down the the river.

As I wrapped up for the day I paused to watch a spring peeper frog hop
over the leaves and then heard a creak and a crack and turned around
just in time to see a good sized tree about 15 feet away topple over,
which is something to remember. So it was a pretty good day, the photos

Thanks, Ann! The tripod is a Manfrotto 3021 BPRO - discontinued now, I
think. With the center post in the sideways mount it can go nearly flat
to the ground. The loweprobag is great - I keep it in the car and
offload whatever I need from the main bag into it. I don't like a
backpack because I spend too much time laying and crawling on the ground
- better something that I can just put down quickly.

Re: GESO - More Spring Flowers

2015-04-20 Thread Mark C
Hi Steve - I am using a Bogen 3021 BRO. With the side mounted center
post it is easy to get the camera right on the ground if you want, but I
seldom want to do that. The head that I use is just an old
Bogen/Manfrotto grip action head. The secret ingredient in the setup is
the rotating tripod collar on the A*200. It allows the lens to rotate
into any position needed in terms of simple horizontal / vertical
alignment. Too bad no one makes a short extention tube with a rotating
tripod mount - that would be worth its weight in gold IMO.

Re: GESO - More Spring Flowers

2015-04-20 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Ken. They are all stacked. I encode a summary of the post
processing steps used in the file name or my future reference - where
there is a numeric rance in the file name that's the stacked images.
Most of these and the rest of the recent wildflowers were stacked in
Photoshop CS6, which just seems to do a better job with this subject
matter. For the larger flwoers - like the trout lily and the trillium -
the stacking does not help much with the subject itself, but rather
using the very narrow DOF to throw the background (which is fairly close
to the subject) more out of focus.

What matters most is how the images look in print... I'll have a hard
copy in my hands in a couple of days. Also, the photos you see here are
not the exact files that are being used for the print runs at cafepress...

Incidentally - that photo is the only one of the lot taken with film -
kodachrome 64... scanned by Spectra for me about 20 years ago.

Always fun to see who likes which flower the most...

Re: GESO: Hunting flowers

2014-09-22 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Tim,

It is a very interesting effort.
The detail and the focus in the first image is very good, but I am

not captivated by the imnage.
The image with the bee would've been the best, but the bee is OOF,
and that's the disappointments I've had several times while trying to get
this type of shots: either the bee or the flower would be OOF.

I like the abstract and somewhat mesmerizing pattern in the 3rd photo.

In the 4th, - the middle portion of the flower, which is completely
yellow, doesn't show well due to the lack of contrast: it looks almost
like a continuous yellow spot. The shallow DOF is not helping either.

(And that's on my calibrated [just 2 weeks ago] Dell U-2410.)

I've seen this type of challenge with some of the unicolored flowers.
I that photo were mine, I would try to boost up the contrast and
sharpen with the edge mask taken to a high value- to enhance the edges of
the features in the middle.

Hope this helps.

And now, the nerdy part, - since you've posted it already, - it has been
taken a bit ahead of the equinox. But you probably know that...
Brian was very kind to post this convenient link that tells you when the
equinox is in your area:

Cheers,

Igor

PESO and GESO - flowers in Moscow Botanical Garden

2014-07-14 Thread Igor Roshchin

As I mentioned in another thread, I've visited the Botanical Garden of
Moscow State University (Moscow, Russia) - about two weeks ago, during a
physics conference.
All the plants in that botanical garden are from various areas of Russia
(or former Soviet Uninion).

Out of 49 photos in the gallery, one of the most favorites is probably
this one:

Re: PESO - Unknown flowers (help id them!)

Jack, Philip, Alan, and Brian,

Thank you for identifying this plant!
(and thank you for looking!)

While visiting Turkey recently, I took pictures of some flowers.

These flowers are on the mid-size trees (or very tall bushes)
 3-4 meters/9-12 ft.:
 http://42graphy.org/misc/turkey/_IR00549.jpg

I don't know what this plant is and I would be curious if somebody can
 identify it.

Constructive comments and critique are always welcome.

 Thank you,

 Igor
