Re: GESO - More Spring Flowers
Hi Eric - This photo might also be of use: http://markcassino.com/b2evolution/media/DSCN6186a.jpg That is my old setup - photo taken in 2006 with my old tripod and I think an *ist-D. But you can see how the tripod collar rotates - in that photo the mounting plate is perpendicular to the the bottom of the camera. An L-bracket would help with the 90 degree turns but it is nice to have the tripod collar that can rotate into any alignment with the tripod head. Re: GESO - More Spring Flowers
Wow - they have simplified switching the center post to being mounted sideways. On the 3021 that I have the process of switching to the side mount is fairly cumbersome, since you have to unscrew the center post, reconfigure it to be side mounted, and then screw it back together. When I broke the old tripod and replaced it with the newer 3021 I did not initially expect to use the center post at a right angle - with just the head and no center pose the tripod goes right down to ground level. But after I tried the sideways mounted center post a few times I came to rely on it - it adds a lot of flexibility to how the camera and lens can be positioned. Thanks Frank. Better than the photos was just the day itself - a few hours int he lush spring woods. The only people I met were a young couple, maybe 20, he had a fishing pole in hand and she was just walking with him to head down the the river. As I wrapped up for the day I paused to watch a spring peeper frog hop over the leaves and then heard a creak and a crack and turned around just in time to see a good sized tree about 15 feet away topple over, which is something to remember. Thanks, Ann! The tripod is a Manfrotto 3021 BPRO - discontinued now, I think. With the center post in the sideways mount it can go nearly flat to the ground. Re: GESO - More Spring Flowers
Hi Steve - I am using a Bogen 3021 BRO. With the side mounted center post it is easy to get the camera right on the ground if you want, but I seldom want to do that. The head that I use is just an old Bogen/Manfrotto grip action head. The secret ingredient in the setup is the rotating tripod collar on the A*200. It allows the lens to rotate into any position needed in terms of simple horizontal / vertical alignment. Too bad no one makes a short extention tube with a rotating tripod mount - that would be worth its weight in gold IMO. Re: GESO - More Spring Flowers
Thanks, Ken. They are all stacked. I encode a summary of the post processing steps used in the file name or my future reference - where there is a numeric rance in the file name that's the stacked images. Most of these and the rest of the recent wildflowers were stacked in Photoshop CS6, which just seems to do a better job with this subject matter. For the larger flwoers - like the trout lily and the trillium - the stacking does not help much with the subject itself, but rather using the very narrow DOF to throw the background (which is fairly close to the subject) more out of focus. Re: GESO: Hunting flowers
Tim, It is a very interesting effort. The detail and the focus in the first image is very good, but I am not captivated by the imnage. The image with the bee would've been the best, but the bee is OOF, and that's the disappointments I've had several times while trying to get this type of shots: either the bee or the flower would be OOF. I like the abstract and somewhat mesmerizing pattern in the 3rd photo. In the 4th, - the middle portion of the flower, which is completely yellow, doesn't show well due to the lack of contrast: it looks almost like a continuous yellow spot. The shallow DOF is not helping either. (And that's on my calibrated [just 2 weeks ago] Dell U-2410.) I've seen this type of challenge with some of the unicolored flowers. I that photo were mine, I would try to boost up the contrast and sharpen with the edge mask taken to a high value- to enhance the edges of the features in the middle. Hope this helps. And now, the nerdy part, - since you've posted it already, - it has been taken a bit ahead of the equinox. But you probably know that... Brian was very kind to post this convenient link that tells you when the equinox is in your area: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?continent=namericaiso=20140923T0229msg=September%20Equinox%202014 http://tinyurl.com/pmmh9qp (Just in case you missed that message.)
