Compared to the price of a 'real' digital panoramic camera, 900 USD is a
steal.

Finally they have something that will handle a DSLR, not even that
expensive compared with a decent manual pano head.

So what can it do that I can't do with an *ist-D and a properly leveled
tripod?

Let you push a button and relax whilst it does the hard yards.

Yeah, but one of them was 900 Euros and the other was 9,000 Euros.

Cost:Benefit ratio just doesn't work for me.

You can buy a LOT of lenses for 9,000 Euros ... and still have money
left over to travel someplace interesting to use them.

I guess that you have to consider that using a system like this for
landscapes a K-x and a nice 70mm would likely provide better results
than the widest ultra-wide on the largest format camera.

I've used a number of 'real' panoramic cameras for years and it's a
totally different feeling. In principle, one could replace large-format
or almost any kind of camera with a DSLR on a panoramic head with only a
few restrictions, if you're prepared to restrict yourself to static
scenes only. Still, the feeling isn't there.

Things like movement or panoramic street photography are excluded
altogether. And we're not just talking formula 1 race cars, here. Try
doing a sea-side sunset with just the last little bit of the sun's disk
above the horizon in, say, a six-frame panorama. You won't believe how
fast things happen and the light changes in such situations.

Horses for courses.

Re: For your great panoramas - gigapan

2010-05-10 Thread George Sinos
Timely topic -

A few weeks ago I had a chance to take photos from the company's
Condor lift. The platform goes to 170 feet. I just got CS5 and used
it to put together this pano from 15 raw files. There's more work
left to be done, but it's not bad for a couple of button presses. To
bad the weather wasn't nicer.

I had to reduce it a bit to fit within Smugmug's size limits.

After you get here - click on the O for the original size photo. You
can scroll back and forth tho see the whole thing.

We were there to shoot the Lineworker's rodeo. Those photos are here:

See you later, gs

I don't know, I do it fairly regularly and I'm mostly quite
successful. More than 6 shots or so would be pushing it though, I also
have successfully shot street with loads of people and movement, but
not formula 1. ;-)
