GESO: Chicago

2005-08-18 Thread Unca Mikey
My first GESO, from our recent trip to Chicago. All shots taken with
my Pentax *ist 35mm, Fuji Superia (200 or 400), and either the FA
28-105 f/3.2-4.5 AL IF or the FA J 18-35. Film processed and
scanned at a local minilab.

Comments and suggestions always welcome -- I had a lot of fun
snapping away on this trip, and think I am learning, both about the
equipment and about seeing things differently.

2005-08-18 Thread Glen

Hi,

I really liked these. I used to live in Chicago, until I was nearly 5 years
old. (That was in the 60's.) I still have a few memories of the city. These
images make me wish I could go back for a vacation sometime, and refresh
some of those childhood memories. These are nice.

take care,
Glen

I like the photo labeled "Shore". Nice balance of compositional
elements and colors.

If there's anything I would suggest for your next photo session it's
"Move in closer!"

The other four photos in this set are not bad pictures but they don't
really have much 'weight' to them ... they seem a little tentative,
distant, as if you weren't quite sure of what you wanted to portray.
Single out something that you want to capture and let it become the
FOCUS of the photograph, the thing that takes your attention.

OK kiddies, I know this is an international list, but the Chicago
Bears will start playing the Indianapolis Colts within the hour. We
are all excited here in Chicago, even the Lions in front of the Art

It was cold and clear here today (-20 degrees C), but a steady stream
of fans were came for snaps with them.

Go Bears! ! !

geso Chicago pictures

I'm slowly nibbling away at my unsorted, or unprocessed photos.
I posted my dance pictures from the Chicago trip a while back.

Here are some of my shots of Chicago that aren't dance pictures:

GESO - Chicago Scenes

2013-08-19 Thread Mark C
My wife and I spent a few days in Chicago earlier this month. I've been
in a film mood this summer and stuck to Tri-X and Arista Primium 400
(similar to Tri-X).

Best snaps of the trip -

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/chicago-scenes

Mz-S, FA 20-35, FA 28-105 (power zoom model) and FA 80-320. The small
bag still had zoom for the Q and 4 of it's lenses as well! Though they
were little used. Film exposed at box speed (400) or pushed 2 stops to 1600.

Comments welcomed.

GESO: Chicago (update): Looking

2005-08-19 Thread Unca Mikey

Thanks to all who commented on the earlier posting.

Godfrey, you suggested I should get in closer -- point well taken,
and something I need to work on. I have to be careful though,
because if I have the FA J 18-35 mounted when a shot presents itself,
I'd have to get in so close I might get arrested! LOL.

Anyway, here's another snap from the same trip. The woman in the
picture is my wife, so I was able to direct her a bit to have more
time to set up a shot.

Enjoyed these. The out of focus church (behind the in-focus tulips)
appears to be Rockefeller Chapel at the U of C. That's where my wife
and I were married in 1971. I was a grad student and used to frequent
Powell's bookstore, which appears in another of your photos. I love,

A terrific gallery, Mark. All winners, but I especially enjoyed the
night shots, and of those extra love for Spirits Three and Dreamland.
They all have a very retro flavour.

GESO - Chicago White Sox

2011-01-08 Thread Chris Mitchell
Nearly finished sorting out 2010 pictures. We went to a baseball game while
we were in Chicago for the PDML exhibition.

Didn't have a clue what was going on for most of the time, but enjoyed it
thoroughly. People were friendly and tried to help us make sense of the
proceedings and the atmosphere was fantastic. There was even a band playing
when we got there, They were called Petty Cash and, bizarrely, did a mixture
of Tom Petty and Johnny Cash covers. Sounds like someone came up with a
great name for a band and then thought "what material shall we do?".

The last picture is the lost opportunity - if only I'd got the lady and her
granddaughter in focus!

This one made me laugh:

It's like a scene from Jacques Tati's film Mon Oncle, in which workmen spend
a lot of time carrying lengths of red pipe around. It was intertextualised
(!) by Louis Malle in his film Zazie dans le metro where we also see workmen
carrying red pipes around.

KC won 7 - 2. Sox only hit the ball 7 times in the whole 2 hours of play.
That's one of many things we didn't get about baseball. How can a top
professional team only hit the ball 7 times in a game that demands that you
hit the ball to score?

Based on the scoreboard shot it's Podsednik. Surprised that you as a long

A player who hits .300 is a great hitter. You might wanta stand up there and
let one of those pitchs just go by you without trying to hit to get a sense of
what the challenge is.

Pitching is a BIG part of the game. PItchers occasionally pitch NO hitters.
That's 81 times guys had a chance to get a hit off em and failed.

Chris,
The ball is smaller and lighter than a cricket ball (I believe).
The 'bowler' is allowed to bend his elbow and pitch with a whip of his arm.
Speeds of 90 to 105 miles per hour are typically achieved.
At those speeds, the ball curves based on catching the stiched seams
in the wind.
Where it moves is dependant on how the pitcher holds the ball as he delivers it.
At those speeds, the ball is a deadly weapon should you be hit in the
head (without a helmit).

those speeds are comparable with cricket bowling speeds. Bowlers also move
the bowl on the same principles, and indeed batsmen do wear helmets for the
same reasons, yet they also manage to hit the ball sometimes. The wicket is
22 yards long, which is slightly longer than the 20 yards from the pitcher's
mound to where the hitter cowers. It's quite possible that the difference in
distance is what matters.

Wearing body armour (other than pads and a box) and helmets in cricket is a
relatively recent innovation - it was unheard of before the late 1970s when
Lillee & Thomson started bowling bouncers for Australia at phenomenal speeds
and stout-hearted Englishmen starting getting hurt. Even at school it could
be frightening. One of the seniors who used to bowl fast at me went on to
play professionally for his county. It was bloody scary seeing him galloping
down on you, and I don't think I ever actually hit anything he bowled at me,
other than by defensive fluke.

On the other hand, not all bowlers are fast. There's a lot of subtlety in
bowling, maybe in pitching too, I don't know. But I like to see a spinner
like Shane Warne, who bamboozled the batsmen rather than intimidated them.

Nearly finished sorting out 2010 pictures. We went to a baseball game
while

we were in Chicago for the PDML exhibition.

Didn't have a clue what was going on for most of the time, but enjoyed it
thoroughly. People were friendly and tried to help us make sense of the
proceedings and the atmosphere was fantastic. There was even a band
playing
when we got there, They were called Petty Cash and, bizarrely, did a
mixture

of Tom Petty and Johnny Cash covers. Sounds like someone came up with a
great name for a band and then thought "what material shall we do?".

The last picture is the lost opportunity - if only I'd got the lady and
her

granddaughter in focus!

A team doesn't actually have to get any hits to score, if the other
teams pitchers are having a bad enough day.

I don't know enough about the history of the game to know if it's ever
actually happened, but it's possible for the pitcher on one team to
pitch a no hitter and for that team to win because the opposing team's
pitchers threw enough balls to "walk" a winning run.

... it only takes one "run" to give the other team a 1 - 0 lead.

There have been losing no-hitters in 1964 and 1967 (the latter a
combined effort by two pitchers).
