Re: GESO: Romania/Austrika
I put "criticism" in quotes because I didn't intend to be critical as such, merely make an observation on a difference in our lives. "Criticism" wasn't the word I wanted, but I couldn't think of a more appropriate word at the time. Still can't for that matter. I used to go out clubbing, and I enjoyed it. As I've gotten older the opportunities for honky-tonkin' have gotten fewer, so I don't do it much anymore. And all my running buddies have fallen by the wayside. And lately school takes so much, I don't have much energy left over for partying. But if I found work photographing in the disco, I'd dig out my ear plugs and have at it. From: Luka Knezevic-Strika hey, it was part of the job. and as young as i am (although that doesn't stop me from feeling oldish myself at times), i don't really enjoy discos, or go there often, except when it's work On Sat, Dec 4, 2010 at 5:36 PM, John Sessoms wrote: > From: John Sessoms > >> I sort of guessed that since the GESO is named "Romania/Austrika" it's >> Romania on the left & Austria on the right. >> > > I know, answering to myself online ... > > Found the answer to my questions right after posting. Had no trouble viewing the slide-show but following the thread, I'm not sure I saw what I think I saw. Do I understand correctly that each slide is one image from Austria paired with one image from Romania? If so, is the same country always on the left? And if that is true, which country is always on the left? I sort of guessed that since the GESO is named "Romania/Austrika" it's Romania on the left & Austria on the right. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: GESO: Romania/Austrika
sorry about the technical issues, i've tried to make it the simplest possible, but it's incredible how hard it is to get a straight, no fades photos on white slideshow. and the white background stays, it's somehow the most non-intruding, i.e. some photos really do stand out on black, but that is the point, it affects photos more. Stan, you helped me realize something with your post - the first slide is my impression from austria/romania condensed, but by honestly exploring the experience and photos i've made to an edit that is a lot more nuanced. my impression is still colored by the hello effect, but it's nice that the slideshow reads as less accusing of romania than that :) (still a lot of stuff is terribly wrong there, and i've rarely felt that about a place, being from serbia and all :D) On Sat, Dec 4, 2010 at 12:08 AM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: > Luka Knezevic-Strika wrote: > >> wait, you click on the slide and nothing happens? >> other methods of navigation? Re: GESO: Romania/Austrika
I didn't see the original version, just the horizontal final version. I was grateful to have the horizontal - on a laptop, two images above one-another results in two small images with much wasted screen real-estate. Based on your introductory text, I started through the set expecting to look at pairs of images. And then the first two images were such a contrast that it made me wonder if you really intended to make such a strong statement about the differences in the two countries or if perhaps I misunderstood. As I continued through, some of the pairs seemed to reflect a comparative point of view, and I decided that the first pair was just an anomaly. I like the concept, and I like many of the individual images. I am very struck by many of your people-pictures, and the shot of the dogs under the graffiti provides a great sense of place. Thanks for sharing your work with us. stan On Dec 2, 2010, at 11:09 AM, Luka Knezevic-Strika wrote: > I've now made a few more changes. > It's horizontally laid out and few more slides removed. > > feel free to check it out > luka > > On Thu, Dec 2, 2010 at 5:19 PM, Luka Knezevic-Strika > wrote: >> Good call Paul, I did eliminate that slide! >> About the length, I find it great when people end it wishing for more. >> I've found that with longer edits, i.e. 30 slides with 2 or more >> pictures, many people don't go through. it has to do with the web >> attention span, it's really rare that people are ready to go for a >> long time just clicking next-next :) >> >> I also found that very few people focused on the pairings, and the way >> it works or doesn't and on the overall flow of the slideshow. somehow, >> most of the comments are about individual images. Good call Paul, I did eliminate that slide! About the length, I find it great when people end it wishing for more. I've found that with longer edits, i.e. 30 slides with 2 or more pictures, many people don't go through. it has to do with the web attention span, it's really rare that people are ready to go for a long time just clicking next-next :) I also found that very few people focused on the pairings, and the way it works or doesn't and on the overall flow of the slideshow. somehow, most of the comments are about individual images. This partly has to mean that the whole thing doesn't work well enough, but i think it also has to do with the way people are used to looking at photos online, which is mostly singled out photos or sometimes straight slideshows. Re: GESO: Romania/Austrika
Luka - Carlos is a quite harsh -- but I agree with him to the extent that you should have pruned a bit more - because your best work is so very strong... and you know I'm a fan. But there are certainly more than 1 or 2 keepers, Carlos! I had a bit of problem viewing the slideshow - because of the wide white borders and I have a strong preference for seeing a stream of images that read left to right instead of up and down. I also wanted to be able to look at each photo alone... as I often liked one of a pair much better than the other... if for no other reason than I could say I really liked one of them and could do so by grabbing a link to show you. Like the second photo on the page where the guy on top is guzzling a beer. The shot below it is terrific... also the one where there are all those chairs on a roof top - ann Luka Knezevic-Strika wrote: Thanks guys. @carlos: i appreciate your opinion, although my goal here was not really to post the best photos necessarily, but to try and create a short essay/narrative. i mainly focused on the pairings and the flow of the slide show. i can accept that i've failed at that too, if that's your opinion. thank you, anyway, of course! I enjoy the view into your life that you share with us when you post. This photo essay is no different. If I were to pick a favorite image from this set, I would have to pick either the man on the street with a cape or the 4 dogs sleeping on the sidewalk. Thanks guys. Without captions, its difficult to comment on specific images but I'll try anyway I love the juxtaposition of the cross and the industrial complex on the lower image of the first pair. Probably my favourite is the top image of the fourth pair - the person in the street wearing the long, black cloak - very mysterious and beautiful colour. The lower image of the seventh pair - the man on the roof. Not sure what he's doing but it's an excellent composition Both images of the 13th pair - nothing specific to comment on but they just attracted my attention. The lower image of the 15th pair - the sleeping dogs and graffiti. Well seen and well captured.
