GESO (5) - Cordoba Mosque-Cathedral

2019-10-15 Thread Rick Womer
In Cordoba, Spain, construction of the Great Mosque began in 784, and continued
for 200 years. When the Christians took over in 1236, they began building
chapels in the sahn (courtyard), and turned the minaret into a bell tower. In
the 1500s the sahn was converted into the nave of a cathedral.

I think the prayer halls (this small gallery) are the most affecting religious
structure I have seen.

I plan a second small gallery of the transition from the Islamic to the
Christian parts of the building; and then a final one of the cathedral.

Enjoy!

These are wonderful. I look forward to seeing more.

Do you know the construction date on the arcade in the first photo?

Thanks, Joe.

I know that construction began in 784 and continued for 200 years or so. I
don’t know what was built when, but this was the first of the prayer galleries.
There is another on the other side of the cathedral, which is very similar but
somehow much less impressive.

Thanks. I've always been interested in the white-and-red masonry, which is
similar to Byzantine masonry of that period. Somewhere online I read that the
Cordoba mosque was modeled after the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, which was
designed by one or more Greek architects.

I've got to see this someday.

What I found utterly bizarre about St Basil's in Moscow is that the red and
white masonry there is painted stucco. Under which is red bricks and white
mortar. Maybe it was easier to paint neat lines.

Sorry about the slow reply. Work is intense these days.

I’ve tried both Safari and Firefox, and get right to the page.
