Grandfather Mountain Photography Weekend

2021-06-30 Thread John

Grandfather Mountain Photography Weekend registration opens July 5

https://grandfather.com/grandfather-mountain-photography-weekend-registration-opens-july-5/

It says there's going to be a contest. Will there be a Mark & Doug show?

I've been in communication with Frank at GFM. The nature museum and
auditorium are currently under construction and undergoing massive
upgrades, so they aren't available for use. So with no food services
and no place to hold the photo presentations or contest and awards
there's no way they can hold a Nature Photography Weekend. They're
doing a much more low-key event (everything outdoors) in August this
year.

That's what it says in the link.

"Due to COVID-19 and ongoing renovation to the Grandfather Mountain Nature
Museum, the nonprofit nature park’s annual Nature Photography Weekend and Camera
Clinic have been combined into one event for 2021"

Maybe next year it will go back to being separate weekends or maybe the new
format will work well and they'll decide to keep on with it.

But it does say:

"The annual Nature Photography Weekend photo contest will also return."

Will the Doug & Mark show return with it?

Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend 2020 CANCELLED

2020-04-01 Thread John

I got an email from them this morning. Tickets usually go on sale April 1.

Dear friends,

Regrettably, due to safety concerns surrounding the spread of COVID-19 (novel
coronavirus), Grandfather Mountain has canceled the 2020 Nature Photography
Weekend, previously scheduled for May 29-31.

This was not an easy decision to reach, but we feel it's a responsible one,
as the safety of our guests and staff comes first and foremost.

Grandfather Mountain voluntarily closed March 15, following suit with
executive orders from N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper (https://governor.nc.gov/) , the
latest of which directs North Carolinians to shelter at home
(https://files.nc.gov/governor/documents/files/EO121-Stay-at-Home-Order-3.pdf)
for 30 days, March 30 to April 29.

During the temporary closure, the park will maintain a minimal level of
essential staffing on site, including animal habitat keepers, maintenance and
security, while strictly adhering to guidelines and recommendations from
Centers for Disease Control (https://www.cdc.gov/) , the N.C. Department of
Health and Human Services (https://www.ncdhhs.gov/) and local officials
(https://www.apphealthcare.com/) .

As of now, the 2020 Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic
(https://grandfather.com/event/grandfather-mountain-camera-clinic-2020) is
still scheduled for Aug. 15-16, while staff works on alternative methods of
providing a Nature Photography Weekend experience to our NPW family. Keep an
eye on your inbox and www.grandfather.com (https://grandfather.com/) for news
and updates.

Thanks for your patience, support and understanding. In the meantime, we hope
you and yours are doing well and keeping safe. We look forward to seeing you
all back on the mountain in the near future.

Sincerely,
Frank Ruggiero Director of Marketing & Communications Grandfather

Mountain Stewardship Foundation

It's a shame, because I really look forward to seeing some of y'all when I get
there (actually, I look forward to seeing ALL y'all, but only some of you come
to the Grandfather Mountain NPW).

The shots on and around the mountain bring back memories - I haven't
been there in about 50 years. Although I have lived within about a mile
of the Parkway (at its closest - the nearest entrance is about 3 miles
away by road) my range is all in the northern half. When I am on the
Parkway in recent decades it has always been between Rockfish Gap (mile
marker 0) and Fancy Gap (mile marker 200).

Last Sunday week I decided to take an afternoon drive to Mabry Mill. I
hadn't been there in about 20 years and had forgotten its orientation.
Morning is best for the preferred view of the wheel side of the mill and
I was there in mid-afternoon. I took a number of shots, but they were a
bit dull because the mill is a weathered gray. I decided to warm things
up a bit and this shot, taken through a Hoya Sepia B filter, is my
favorite:

Steve got to see this message twice. After decades with my old email

Grandfather Mountain Video Request

2019-04-28 Thread Steve Cottrell
Hi PDMLers

I have an odd request - does anyone happen to have a computer file of the test
film I made back about 10 years of the PDML meet at Grandfather Mountain? It
features interviews with Stan Halpin and Scott Loveless amongst others and
photos from a PDML annual.

I had a massive hard drive crash a couple of years ago and at the time I
recovered most of the files and stored them ready for whenever. Well, whenever
was today and I was sorting through them and I cannot find hide nor hair of
this (obviously important!) piece of work.

If anyone (Stan?) has a copy would you mind WeTransferring it to me at

But it *WAS* entertaining when three winners in a row piped up with "That's not

I think that should be one of the random non-Pentaxian quotes added to the 2018

"That's not my photo" - Random GFM Nature Photography Weekend contest "winner".

Pulled in about 15 minutes ago. Got half-way through unloading my car
before it started pouring down rain, so I still have a bit of that ahead
of me before I'll really be home again.

Baxter hasn't decided yet whether she's going to forgive me for making
her stay at the pet hotel while I was gone, but I think she'll come
around eventually. At least I hustled home to get her before they close
for the evening, so she didn't have to spend another night alone.

I have got to start training her to walk on a leash & ride in the car so
I can take her with me. Otherwise I'm going to have problems getting
around to photograph stuff.

Unfortunately, my alternative (Earthlink) is also being screwed up by
spammers right now. Several of the IP addresses for their mail servers
keep getting blacklisted by the SPAM catching service the PDML Server
uses. If my post to PDML catches one of those IP addresses it gets
bounced by the PDML server.

Finding anyone at Earthlink to address the problem is almost as
difficult as finding someone at Yahoo.

We used to use flea & tick collars around an ankle until the Army banned
it because too many idiots were too stupid to understand you had to put
it around the OUTSIDE of your boot, not on the inside.

There was also a tick repellent packet you could carry in an outside
cargo pocket. Taken off the market again because stupid people didn't
use it according to the instructions, and had a reaction.

they seldom bother you. If, however, you unexpectedly come into close
proximity to a bear in the woods, or inadvertently approach a cub,
things can get very dicey indeed. I got rather close to a number of
them in Alaska, but I kept my distance and they were more interested
in the salmon than me, so there was never any real danger. The sight

If you're traipsing around in the woods be sure to wear long pants and tuck
your pants legs into your socks.

Most of my Alaskan trips were scheduled for late August/early September to take

It's NOT seeing a wild bear that is dangerous. If you see the bear
before it sees you, and you stay out of its way and awy from any cubs,
they seldom bother you.
The sight
-- or the smell -- can increase one's pulse rate a bit in any event.

Where will you be? Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park was a very

The first two years i was at GFM, 2005 and 2006, i had my tent very
close to PDML central, ie Cory's trailer. By the third year, 2007, i
guess everyone had enough of my snoring so they banished me to the
corner lot. Well guess what, the last night there a bear came in and
trashed the trash. I will assume when i make it back i'll be allowed
to resume my regular tent spot.

Hmm. Well, Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins did bring about the death of
Pope Cyriacus, albeit indirectly. Ursula means little she-bear...
