RE: Hanging by a thread

2012-05-24 Thread Bob W
That's been one of the few good programmes on TV recently - I love it.

Notwithstanding what your LOCOG friends say though, the thing that has
impressed me (and not necessarily in a good way) has been the sheer
unstoppable inexorability of the whole operation.

The programme panders to our self-image as hopeless bumblers who somehow
muddle through in the end, but the facts suggest that we are rather more
Germanic than that cosy image would have us believe and it has all unrolled
like some colossal mega-juggernaut, crushing all Hugh Grantishness beneath
its mighty wheels as it 'delivers' a successful Olympics.

The only thing that can stop it now is the mightiest force in all of nature
- the London traffic.

I love the sculpture. To answer Mark C's question, it is Quantum

was on my jogging route before they blocked it off to build the cable
car, is that you can never quite make out the shape of the body, but
you can feel that it's there in a strange indistinct way. It's quite
tantalising - always slightly out of your grasp or comprehension. The
scultpure is 100ft high, which gives some scale to the cable car

Interesting sculpture - with varying lighting and changing seasons, it
could be the subject of lots of images...

I've never really thought about the platform. If you'd asked me to describe
it before you mentioned it, I probably wouldn't have been able to. In fact
it is quite consistent with the others that are around, and I suspect it is
an old jetty or platform for something that's been there long before the
sculpture. There is a similar one, empty, in the first picture of the set.

They are both quite similar to the coaling jetty by the power station, whose
legs are Doric (or perhaps Tuscan), in keeping with the classical
architecture of Greenwich:

It's my old bike in the photo, and my Domke F2. Earlier yesterday I took the

No doubt it will form an important part of the legacy plans which are
already in place. For instance, the 3-day Eventing and Equestrian Cross
Country taking place in Greenwich will surely be the nucleus for growth in
horse-riding among all the inner-city kids whose council houses have stable
yards attached; similarly (and perhaps more probably), the shooting events
taking place at Woolwich Barracks will inspire future generations to move on
from knives, chains and molotov cocktails, to more accurate weapons better
suited to ride-by shootings.

The cable-car will form an important stop on the tourism itinerary for
people who want a good overview of the Olympic Tumbleweed Farm.

Yes I do like those towers. They'd look very nice in a scenic valley somewhere.

It's a nice set of photos. I like the ones of the tower isolated against the
dark clouds. I think #5 is my favourite, it looks like the little pod is
heading off into a thunderstorm.

I'm guessing the sculpture really needs to be seen first-hand to get the most
out of it but I do think your last photo shows it quite well.

I've already decided not to be an early adopter on this one...

I love the sculpture. To answer Mark C's question, it is Quantum Cloud, by
Antony Gormley. Gormley's sculptures are almost always based on his own
body, and I think his work is very interesting. He is also an outstanding
draughtsman.

The great thing about Quantum Cloud, which was on my jogging route before
they blocked it off to build the cable car, is that you can never quite make
out the shape of the body, but you can feel that it's there in a strange
indistinct way. It's quite tantalising - always slightly out of your grasp
or comprehension.

The scultpure is 100ft high, which gives some scale to the cable car towers,
which I also think are rather good.

It's been going downhill ever since I moved here.

cable snaps will surely follow -
Nice photo snaps - scary subject.. especially with stormy skies background.

Will watch for the news broadcasts when a pod or two will tumple from
the sky and impale themselves on the hideous sculpture

There goes the neighborhood

Nice shots - what is that metallic bramble / tree thing in the 7th and
9th shots? Some sort of antenna?

We had one of those for the 1984 World's Fair. It would carry you to and from
Algiers (which is the murder capitol of the New Orleans area). Rumor had it
that the construction people were carrying big bags of cement to the Fair site
by putting them in those little cars, and that some of the cars snapped loose
and went into the river.

Testing is under way on a cable car that has been built across the Thames
from Greenwich to some God-forsaken hole that no-one would ever go to except
that it's near the Olympic stadium. Here are some snaps (photo snaps, not
