Re: "I am leaving Pentax because it limits me..."

2011-07-01 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I didn't "leave" Pentax. I stopped using Pentax equipment. Big deal:
I've owned and used equipment made by all the major vendors and most
of the minor ones too over the past 40+ years. Equipment is
transitory: the least important part of doing photography is what
brand of equipment you use.

If people feel they cannot do what they want with a particular brand
of equipment, by all means they should try to use something else. If
they then *still* can't do the photography they want to, I suggest
that the problem isn't the equipment at all.

I've been reasonbly successful doing the photography I wanted to do
with all of the equipment I've owned. I change equipment mostly
because I see advantage and comfort in trying some other gear, for
some clear reason, usually because my photographic goals change and
some other mix of gear seems to be more suited to a particular goal.
Sometimes it works out that way, sometimes not. But I *always* get the
work I need to do accomplished, whatever gear I happen to be using.

"...Equipment often gets in the way of Photography. ..."

RE: "I am leaving Pentax because it limits me..."

2011-06-30 Thread Tanya Love
I'm in a big rush, but I'd just like to add that I just won two silver
distinctions and a silver award at the Australian Professional Photography
Awards, with nothing other than my K-7! :)

I tell you what, Pentax Australia is finally taking a bit of notice of me now,
and I even had a nice long chat with the marketing department and CEO of CR
Kennedy at PMA on the weekend.

In all honesty, I *have* struggled in the past months due to the sensor noise
that I have in low light conditions, but I have two *very* cheap K-5s on their
way to me (thanks for listening CR Kennedy!),
and I think I will be up to scratch then!

You can see my award shots here:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150241867583840.339602.256694448839

I have to tell you that I certainly did gloat a bit when a very well known AIPP
Grand-Master (a professional of 40 years experience) who has been mentoring me
for the awards and who shoots with a 5D MkIII, only went home with two silvers!
Bwahahaha! And here's me, my first awards, and shot with only my trusty little
K-7 and AF50mm/f1.7, beating him (and lots of others) in the awards stakes!
Woohoo!

t.x.

Subject: "I am leaving Pentax because it limits me..."

Before you flame on me, no I am not. I will stay with my loved white Kr, and
maybe a K5 update later...

But how many times I heard this from friends... countless.

Most of the time the reason is: Pentax is not good for studio photography.

I was not aware of Benjikan (or Benjamin Kanarek) until recently a friend of
mine directed me to his page. (FYI:
http://www.benjaminkanarek.com/ )

So I now always ask my friends when they say Pentax is not good enough for
studio: You think his photographs are not good enough? You already reached his
level and you feel it's not enough for you?

Obviously... the answer is no :D

But to be honest I had some hesitations sometimes as well... I love Sony's new
system, for not having a blacked VF during the photos and most importantly,
videos. But is it really that important? Well... no.

But which other company offers you the possibility to try the astrophotography
for a low price of £200ish? Or has a grip so comfortable that you don't really
want to use a battery grip to make the use of the camera comfortable?

But on the other end there are limits for sure. Not having most of the 3rd
party companies support for P-TTL (YangNuo, Phottix...) is one of the main
concerns, but apart from that... I am still in love with Pentax :)

So, yes... Sony A55 and Nikon D5100 are really tempting for me giving a bit
more options, but I believe my little Pentax Kr is a very good partner for my
photography needs.

Why did I write this? Well... I just had to tell you this and we read so many
rants then why not a praise? :)

Regards,
.t

I use Pocket Lizards as well, but it is nice to be able to hook my old
Metz 60 flash to a PC socket rather than going through a shoe mount adapter.
I tried tethering with one of my older cameras (did the K20 tether?) and
found that for product photography it was swell, but for any kind of
portraiture it was more of a distraction for both me and the subject.

All shot with Pentax, all but two in the studio.

Ask your friends if their cameras have a PC socket. The K20, K7 and K5
all do, the K10 was missing it, and the istD has one. I'm not sure
about the other models.
Also, I've seen many times when an image has veiling flare with Nikon
and Canon lenses because of a misplaced hair light. This is something I
just never have to worry about.
