I got to play with a 645D yesterday!

2010-06-04 Thread tanyalove
And I have photos to prove it! Using hotel internet right now though and the
connection keeps dropping out, so will post it up when I return home in a
couple of days.

I wonder if any of you knew this? The 645D will be released here (Australia)
in August. The staff of Pentax Australia (CR Kennedy) are insisting that it
will NOT be released in the US, EVER. This is because apparently "nobody" in
the US would buy it, and Aussie Pentax has a "very good relationship" with
Japan Pentax. Can anyone else back up this claim?

RRP of the 645D in Australia will be aud$15k.

What else?? Erm, that thing is HUGE and HEAVY and AWESOME, and I WANT ONE!!

Here's a pic of it next to my K-7, it DWARFS it!!

Sounds like your Pentax Australia guys have been doing drugs. The US is a solid

I had a quick look at it today too although I didn't do much more than pick it
up and hold it up to my eye. Too much temptation otherwise.

One guy told me 14 to 16k (AUD naturally) while the other said 15k but it does
include the 55mm lens. I think CRK are currently trying to work how to attach a
Sigma zoom to it like every other Pentax body they sell.

I was being nice so i didn't point out that the Japanese online stores had it
listed for 10.5k, or that it was being shown in France and had been shown in
Canada.

They do have a very good relationship with Pentax, Malcolm was on the
Pentax board at one stage. They also already supply and service MF
digital kit (Blad) unlike Pentax USA. So there could be truth in it.

I expect Pentax might delay US release until the bugs are worked out, but

IIRC, Ned Bunnell told The Online Photographer that they were still
considering the import. Another thing that wouldn't make sense is to
just slide this camera silently into the sortiment, without making an
event of announcing it.

The Nordic distributor is totally silent. :-(

Very odd. It's as though they don't really want to sell the camera. Perhaps
production capability is minimal. If it's not distributed worldwide, we may
still see full frame eventually. But that's probably a long ways off, if at all.

The current Norwegian distributor are generally silent about Pentax.
Their website shows the camera bodies, but absolutely nothing online

The world is a pretty small place now. Anyone that wants one will be able to
get it, whether it's officially sold or not. This is going to be a very
small market camera.
A guy I vaguely know who lives a couple of hours from here has been quietly
buying 645 lenses for fairly cheap ever since the P645D was announced. He's
fairly excited about this camera.

That makes two of us! I've been stalking 645 lenses "on the quiet" for a
few months now myself.

*Hoping* though, that I may not need to soon, as I've been talking turkey
with Pentax, and it's looking good for my sponsorship request. :)

FWIW, Kayell and CR Kennedy had back to back stands at PMA and were
"sharing" a lot. They all were extremely friendly with each other,
actually. So, anyways, I was lucky enough that Tony Holden
(who is also the Vice President of the Qld branch of the AIPP, which I am
about to submit my portfolio to), took me over to the Kayell stand and
demonstrated the Medium Format capabilities of the
Blads that they were using there. I was FLOORED! He showed me a shot of a
city scape that was a night time panoramic. Lots of sky scrapers with
brightly coloured dots all over them (lit windows).
He demonstrated the lack of noise in the underexposed sky which was lovely
in itself. But, then, he brought out the big guns, and zoomed in on a
building, that looked to be a few kilometres away. I
fell over at the detail. I could actually see people standing in their
kitchens, and living rooms, in DETAIL. Now these were Blads, so different
glass/sensors etc to the 645D, but I promise you, that the
moment I have the cash, one of those babies is mine! AND, in the meantime,
I'll be bargain hunting for awesome lenses to match.
