Re: Idiot's Guide to GFM

2008-04-29 Thread David J Brooks
I'll be a lot farther away this year.:-0

It usually rains Thursday, as thats Mark's hike night.

The camp area is just at the Y n the park road. There should be a Fuji
blimp and a Pentax sign. We are next to the only wash room, pretty
smart eh.:-0

Bring more cameras than you think you'll need. Works for me.:-0

At least a 200 for the nature area. A 300-400 would be nicer for bears
and cougars. A 200 will do for the otters and deer.

Its cool at night, so no need to put beer on ice, out doors will do.

We do a far bit of BBQing, so if you want to bring burgers or saugage,
something like that.

Oh and COFFEE for the mornings.

Enjoy, i wish i could be there.

Dave

Bring raingear, camera and lenses (horror of horrors I may just take the
Optio MX due to physical limitations), beer, raingear, a comfortable tent
with air mattress and warm sleeping bag, raingear, and raingear.

Beer and no inhibitions and raingear

Forget about the scotch, the judges will be swilling beer and Dr. Pepper.

Don't forget the raingear.

Look for the picnic area about 1/4-1/2 mile from the entrance on the right.

We'll probably arrive late afternoon or early evening on Friday.

And here is PDML Central from last year:

(The entrance to the "campground" is on the far right)

Also note the truck near the entrance? That's as close as Dave Brooks
is allowed to set up his tent.

Cheers,

Re: Idiot's Guide to GFM

2008-04-28 Thread Bob Sullivan
Rebekah,
Here's a simple rundown from what I remember.

We got there Friday after 12:00 noon, it was raining...
The folks at the entrance were kind enough to let us onto the mountain
and we drove to the top.
There is a weather station at the top and you can check it online.
It's cold on the mountain.
At 2:30 or 3 PM, we went back down to the entrance and a meadow off to
one side (east?).
There was a registration tent with folks passing out credentials.

We drove back up the mountain 2.5 miles or so to the picnic area.
This is where all campers are and the pdml are located.
After a short visit, we went to town to check into a hotel and got some dinner.
We returned in time for Don's welcome presentation at the
museum/theater/cafe building.
It was still raining...

Afterwords, we drove off the mountain and down into town to sleep.
(We stopped for a short time at the picnic area to visit with the pdml folks,
but had to leave before the gates to the mountain are locked for the night.
Bad/Good idea as there was a great deal of fun to be had that night,
but little sleep! )

We returned the next morning to shoot pictures.
There are lots of scenic vistas - think 50mm or wide angle?
The animals in the enclosures are another good photo opportunity -
think a longer lens, maybe 200mm?
Flowers and fauna are also great subjects - a macro or anything with
close focus is good to bring.
By Saturday afternoon you'll want to pick 3 good pictures to submit to
the contest.
Somebody will help you burn them to a cd if you don't bring a laptop.
All this happens in the cafe area and it's not a bad place to crash
after a day outside.

There is a dinner at the cafe/museum/theater for all participants
followed by the Saturday night presentations.
Same deal for us going down the mountain, visiting the campers, and
returning to town.

Sunday morning we returned to the mountain.
(Many campers tooked a bit tired & bedraggled, perhaps too much fun on
Saturday night.)
For an extra $8-10, there is a breakfast (think carbo loading)
followed by presentations.
By 11 AM or so, Mark and Doug start showing the best submissions to
the contest and the winners.
They try to wrap things up by Noon and get folks headed for home.
We stayed for some lunch and talk to list members then headed out to
the Smokeys around 2:30.

Hope this helps, Bob S.

Re: Idiot's Guide to GFM

2008-04-28 Thread Rick Womer
Well, Rebekah, that just depends...

Last year Cotty and I set a standard for campground
comfort by renting a motor home for the weekend. (He
flew into DC and I flew into Charlotte, so there was a
limit to how much gear we could carry--that was our
excuse!) Cotty seems to have decided this was too
decadent or compromised (note spelling) his rugged
manly image or something, so he claims he'll be in a
humble tent. So, you could bring a motor home and not
be thought out of line.

On my way from Charlotte I stopped and bought two
cases of =good= beer. There wasn't even a bottle cap
left by Sunday noon.

The food in the GFM restaurant has calories, but
that's about all. Annsan cooked several of us a
delicious breakfast Sunday. I also picked up some
fruit and some packaged cheese, and was glad I had
them.

Alas, this year I'll be doing a highly compressed trip
to Chicago for a conference (fly in Saturday morning,
fly home Saturday night), and will be missing GFM. I
-really- will miss it, though!

I'm so sorry not to be going this year... do listen to the guys - you do
need rain gear. One thing no one
mentioned that I sure had with me were binoculars. Another thing might
be earplugs - oh wait, Chainsaw
isn't going this year -- nevermind...:-)

Probably don't have to tell you not to wear floral scents or creams -
but no one else mentioned it --
there are black bears around and little flying beasties too that would
probably like you to smell sweet.

There is a supermarket pretty close by with good stuff should you be
inspired to cook.
If your lenses or filters get dirty, just hand 'em over to NIko - he is
the "Monk" of the cast.

also, a good BBQ place that I'm sure Scott and others know the way to.
 If you can get there
on Thursday do it - its lovely to be camping before the crowds come.

here is a little glimpse of last year's trip for me.

Camera gear you'll use or want to show off. Everything from long johns

If you don't have good rain gear, buy some it WILL rain. Extra clothes

Stuff that you won't use, I guess. Do not leave behind your rain gear
(see the pattern here?). When you see what all I bring, you'll laugh.

The "Staff" sometimes arrive on Wednesday night. Some PDML folks who
are camping (myself included) usually arrive Thursday . Mark climbs the
mountain and camps up there Thursday night (spky). The bulk of the

The picnic ground about halfway up the mountain on the right. Look for

Hey, I don't have anything better to do.

> What do I bring?

I've been known to bring photo chemicals. Most people bring a digital
camera or four and every freakin' lens known to man. It's a prime
opportunity to try out new gear, so if there's a lens/body/flash/etc.
you'd like to manhandle, just ask. Someone is probably willing to drag
it up the mountain for you.

Bring clothing suitable for cool weather and rain. It always rains.
Try to layer. It can get warm during the day and below 50 at night.

> What do I leave behind?

Leave behind your inhibitions, acrophobia, and any desire to smell good
on Sunday.

> When should I arrive?

Friday afternoon is best. Check the GFM site for check-in times.

> Where do I go to find you guys?

Go up the hill, turn right at the Fuji blimps, follow the drunken revelry.

> Should I bring food?

YES!

 > What kind of food?

We're not picky.

> How much camping gear do I need?

Make sure you have something warm to sleep in. Honestly, with all the
crap we bring along you shouldn't really need much.

> What are you packing in your camera bag and what do you suggest?

Well, I'm packing a 645 and maybe a digital P&S. GFM offers a plethora
of opportunities for macro, flora, fauna, landscape, wide-angle,
telephoto, and goofball portraiture photography. If you can't decide
whether to bring a lens, bring it. We're pretty much outside all
weekend, so make sure you have the necessary stuff to keep your
equipment clean and dry. If you follow the mountain goat on the death
march, you might want to bring a camera bag suitable for climbing up
very high and then falling down very low. Bring a tripod or a monopod.

> Should I bring a laptop?

If you are entering the contest and/or want to edit your photos on the
mountain, you should bring a laptop. Otherwise, it's probably dead
weight. Don't expect internet access. For that matter your cell phone

Nice try Mark, but bullshit :-)

Rebekah, gear wise take a tripod, something wide (it is mountains) &
something longish (about 200mm+) for the wildlife enclosures.

Bringing a laptop with a CD burner iprocess you entries into the photo
contest (should you decide to) is a good idea as computer time is at a
premium. But not necessary as someone will no doubt let you borrow
theirs.

Alcohol is a good idea. If for no other reason than to help with the
shock at exposure to so many Pentax geeks.

I'll leave it to the more experienced GFM'ers to help advise you on
camping & whatnot.

Cheers,

Dave

What to bring?
All the camera gear you can carry.

What to leave behind?
Where to start the list, well based on the photographs I've seen
primarily your dignity...

Where do I find you guys?
Look for the largest group of drunken rowdys.

Should I bring food?
Yes!

What kind.
Beer! (It's tradition).

How much camping gear do I need?
It's the mountains in springtime, it probably won't snow, but you can never
tell, be prepared for hot days and cold nights and rain.

What are you packing in your camera bag and what do you suggest?
See the answer to the first question...

should I bring a laptop?
Yes.

It's customary to provide a bottle of single-malt Scotch for each of the
photo contest judges.
