Hi Keith,

First, thanks for taking the time to comment on the whole
gallery.

I agree, the subject is interesting but I had no time to spend
on it - in fact the resulting picture is quite far from my best
ones, but I'm trying to show only my most recent work instead of
browsing through the old shots (probably I'm just lazy,
though... :-)
I'll be back in the former jail tomorrow, I'll see if I'm able
to do something better.

Ciao,

Thanks for taking on the challenge to comment on the whole PUG, Keith.
Most impressive.

Thanks also for picking my shot as one of your personal favourites.
I will not disclose the exact circumstances around the shot just yet;

 My personal picks for the month:
 Photo - Jostein; mystery - Wendy; interpretation - Sridhar.

 Comments...

 * Jostein: Curves in...
 I don't usually go for abstract but I like this one.
 Curtains blown by the wind?

 * Dave Brooks: Swirls.
 Interesting but I would like it a little sharper with more contrast.

 * Jens Bladt: Watersurface.
 Interesting effect but the highlights are a bit distracting.

 * Kenneth Waller: A very grainy image.
 I rather like the knots in this which make it a bit different.
 I'm not going to guess: What would I do with 100 pixels?

 * Ray Allen: A cliff face.
 Fun picture!

 * Cotty: Transparent Conundrum.
 I like the way this has been photographed: grey on grey.
 (What Mike said.)

 * Paul Stenquist: An easy one.
 Not sure about this one. Well shot but my eyes keep getting
 pulled to the bottom of the image.

 * Wendy Beard: No title.
 For me, one of the best what is it?
 Would never have guessed, despite it being pretty obvious!

 * Mark Roberts: CokeBus.
 Just can't make up my mind about this one.

 * Dan Matyola: Cave Canem.
 Interesting. A little soft?

 * Robert Gonzalez: What am eye?
 Nicely shot. Unusual colouring. Like it.
 (What Mike said.)

 * Me: Here.
 I'll neither confirm nor deny Mike's guess!
 I took several photos specifically for this theme but didn't like
 the way they came out, so used a crop from an earlier photograph
 instead.

 * Casaletti Leonardo: Fly.
 Nicely captured and an unusual bug. Whites are perhaps a bit blown.

 * Thrainn Vigfusson: Who's head is it anyway?
 Fun! I like it.

 * Joseph Tainter: Mystery to me.
 Sharp and I like the pose. It's not static bird on a stick
 because it's attentive and about to do something.

 * Patrick Rendulic: Minnie.
 Sorry...but I don't like cats! Any opinion I expressed would be
 irretrievably biased. 8-)

 * Boris Liberman: Common Language.
 BW makes it a bit more mysterious.
 I think Mike's got it.

 * Bob Sullivan: In Costume.
 Before I read Bob's comment my thought was that the mystery was
 What is the mystery? (Having worn a similar funny get-up on one
 occasion.) Nice capture.

 * Henk Terhell: Flight of the Soul.
 Interesting idea. I rather like it.

 * Bruce Dayton: Ready.
 Very nicely shot!

 * Gainfranco Irlanda: A Car?
 Interesting as an object but the image is a little static.
 Perhaps another angle?

 * Sridhar Gibikote: What's that?
 I like the atmosphere and light of this photograph. The
 water-line is, however, perhaps a bit too central. Perhaps it
 would be better from a little further away with the people a
 little higher and slightly further to the left.
 It's a very clever interpretation of the theme, however.

 * Harald Rust: Epiphyte.
 I like this. I think it is a rather tricky subject but this one
 is nicely posed. A bit green and soft perhaps.

 * Jan van Wijk: Cornflower with Bee.
 Nicly captured and appealing colours. If it's cropped, I would,
 perhaps, have put the bee a bit higher and to the left.

 * John Forbes: Watchers.
 This could actually go under the theme in the same way as
 Sridhar's: What are they watching? Not sure what I think about
 this one.

I actually 'retrofitted' this pic - browsed and found this one which I
thought might be OK for the theme.
When we reached that spot, I just asked everyone to pose looking
towards the water... moved them around just a wee bit etc.

 The white hat and other clothes are interesting details as well as the
 people in the background.
 I like the frame too ;-)

Thanks Markus. This shot was one of a whole series of the girls playing in
the garden last summer, and it was the pose(s) that I thought made the shot.
They're not always that nice to one another!

As I promised last month, I comment on some of the PUG entries.
At first sight I was glad that I found different interpretations of the
theme Close
and not only the obvious macro shots. A big thanks to Adelheid for her
work!

Close as you can get

romantic lightning and very nice gesture. My favorite children shot of
closeness!
The softness and slightly oof does not disturb me here.

RE: July PUG is open

2005-07-05 Thread Markus Maurer

The second part of my comments on the July PUG:

Ranunculus
--

I like it as a flower shot because it is simple.
Still I would have preferred something closer to the theme ;-)

Busy Bumblebee
--

By far the best close-up shot in this PUG for me . Very well executed,
lovely composition, rich colors.
Easily my favorite among this type of shots here.

Dragonfly
-

After all this wonderful dragonfly shots in the last days it's hard for this
photo
I like the posing but would like to see a bit more space around the animal.
I miss a bit sharpness and DOF too. The green leave and background is nice.

Close Encounter of Feline Kind
--

As a cat lover, I do of course like this PUG entry. The unusual composition
is interesting,
of course cutting the ears distracts somewhat. The expression on the face
and the position
of the leg compensates for that shortcomings. the Close is somewhat in the
title only,
but I enjoy this shot.

Podiceps Auritus in spring time
---

I'm a bit at loss with that one.
I do not see the relationship to close and the picture does not move me in
its current state.
Is that a very rare bird or what's the secret behind this shot?

Closed Door
---

A classic interpretation of Close. I would not imagine that this shot was
taken in Hawaii!
I think that the composition could be a bit stronger by moving the door more
off center and
maybe even going closer. The floor and the stones lack a bit of detail which
could be fixed
on the computer. Is it slightly overexposed or is that my monitor setting?

Close the Doors
---

A refreshing interpretation of the theme, I like that.
I'm somewhat not so happy with the view and would like to see one or more of
the doors closer
or a nice detail of one. Still, I like the idea behind that entry.

Sundown in Torrevieja
-

This one looks more like a painting than a photo to me. I have some sweet
memories regarding harbors
maybe that's one of the reasons I like this photo. A loose but inspiring
interpretation of the theme
for me.

4 July 2004
---

A wonderful firework photo, I wish I could do such a nice one. The rockets
exploded very close to each other,
is that the relationship to the PUG theme? Or is this already the open
forum and the section title is missing on
the page?

Peace
-

Very nice colors and indeed it looks like a peaceful place. I would like to
know a little bit of the story behind that shots
and why it is Close (to night?) I would love to have an A20mm ;-)

Yellow Flower
-

Of course I'm somewhat influenced by my favorite interpretations of the PUG
theme so this one does not really catch my
attention. I expect from a macro lens more sharpness, would like the flower
a bit more off center and a uniform background
here.

Conclusion
--

To be honest, I expected a bit wider interpretations of the Close theme
and hoped for more shots especially taken with this theme in mind. I have no
problems with the technical shortcomings of some of the (snap)shots when
they move me content wise.
It looks like this was a complicated theme and indeed I did not have a good
idea for an entry myself so I better stop complaining now ;-)

Thanks to anybody for the entertainment and the PUG team for the work.

Markus

This nineteenth century building is indeed in Hawaii, right on the main
drag (Alii Street) in Kauilua-Kona.

You are correct on both counts, I am afraid to say.

The floor and the stones lack a bit of detail which could be fixed

This shot was taken around noon time on a bright and sunny tropical
day. That is why the wooden walkway is someshat washed out. I left it
that way, however, because it gives a hint of the weather and latitude.
It was dark on my monitor, so I brightened it a bit before submitting
it. That may have been a mistake.

Thanks again,

Descent to Saturn
-

needs the explanation for me to see what it is, an interesting different
view.
Why do I think of some kind of milkshake watching it ;-)

Intimacy

my favorite interpretation of close is the relationship between humans.
I like the look of the child and the smile of his father (?) but the picture
lacks quality wise for me and has a yellow cast here on my monitor.

Tereza and Blaze

A caring moment but the picture is technically too imperfect for me.

Grandpa
---

The expression on the faces of Grandpa and the child make the photo for me.
Looks like a snapshot with the usual technical shortcomings regarding
background and framing
Must be nice to have a grandpa like that!

Friends at school
-

a really refreshing and well composed picture of friendship , I like that a
lot.
Maybe changing the background a bit... but you knew that already ;-)

Close as you can get

romantic lightning and very nice gesture. My favorite children shot of
closeness!
The softness and slightly oof does not disturb me here.

Close friends
-

a well seen moment here. I like the light on the hair and the pose.
Seems to have some unnatural brown/yellow coloring and I would crop the
picture to
upright format.

Home for the Holidays
-

Knowing the story helps because otherwise it could well be just a staged
shot.
The white hat and other clothes are interesting details as well as the
people in the background.

An interesting title!
I like the softness and the colors and the angle of the flower a lot.
I give preference to more unusual interpretations of the theme close than
a close-up shot,
but otherwise it is very well done.

Water Lilies

Nice colors and technically well executed. I like the composition too.
I would have liked a wi(l)der interpretation of the theme close.
This is a beautiful flower shot but I do not see the story.

nice, but there is something about the monthly
collection of themed images that is especially
interesting, provocative, and beautiful.
