RE: July PUG is open
The second part of my comments on the July PUG: Ranunculus -- I like it as a flower shot because it is simple. Still I would have preferred something closer to the theme ;-) Busy Bumblebee -- By far the best close-up shot in this PUG for me . Very well executed, lovely composition, rich colors. Easily my favorite among this type of shots here. Dragonfly - After all this wonderful dragonfly shots in the last days it's hard for this photo I like the posing but would like to see a bit more space around the animal. I miss a bit sharpness and DOF too. The green leave and background is nice. Close Encounter of Feline Kind -- As a cat lover, I do of course like this PUG entry. The unusual composition is interesting, of course cutting the ears distracts somewhat. The expression on the face and the position of the leg compensates for that shortcomings. the Close is somewhat in the title only, but I enjoy this shot. Podiceps Auritus in spring time --- I'm a bit at loss with that one. I do not see the relationship to close and the picture does not move me in its current state. Is that a very rare bird or what's the secret behind this shot? Closed Door --- A classic interpretation of Close. I would not imagine that this shot was taken in Hawaii! I think that the composition could be a bit stronger by moving the door more off center and maybe even going closer. The floor and the stones lack a bit of detail which could be fixed on the computer. Is it slightly overexposed or is that my monitor setting? Close the Doors --- A refreshing interpretation of the theme, I like that. I'm somewhat not so happy with the view and would like to see one or more of the doors closer or a nice detail of one. Still, I like the idea behind that entry. Sundown in Torrevieja - This one looks more like a painting than a photo to me. I have some sweet memories regarding harbors maybe that's one of the reasons I like this photo. A loose but inspiring interpretation of the theme for me. 4 July 2004 --- A wonderful firework photo, I wish I could do such a nice one. The rockets exploded very close to each other, is that the relationship to the PUG theme? Or is this already the open forum and the section title is missing on the page? Peace - Very nice colors and indeed it looks like a peaceful place. I would like to know a little bit of the story behind that shots and why it is Close (to night?) I would love to have an A20mm ;-) Yellow Flower - Of course I'm somewhat influenced by my favorite interpretations of the PUG theme so this one does not really catch my attention. I expect from a macro lens more sharpness, would like the flower a bit more off center and a uniform background here. Conclusion -- To be honest, I expected a bit wider interpretations of the Close theme and hoped for more shots especially taken with this theme in mind. I have no problems with the technical shortcomings of some of the (snap)shots when they move me content wise. It looks like this was a complicated theme and indeed I did not have a good idea for an entry myself so I better stop complaining now ;-) Thanks to anybody for the entertainment and the PUG team for the work. The floor and the stones lack a bit of detail which could be fixed on the computer. Is it slightly overexposed or is that my monitor setting? This shot was taken around noon time on a bright and sunny tropical day. That is why the wooden walkway is someshat washed out. A big thanks to Adelheid for her work! Descent to Saturn - needs the explanation for me to see what it is, an interesting different view. Why do I think of some kind of milkshake watching it ;-) Intimacy my favorite interpretation of close is the relationship between humans. I like the look of the child and the smile of his father (?) but the picture lacks quality wise for me and has a yellow cast here on my monitor. Tereza and Blaze A caring moment but the picture is technically too imperfect for me. Grandpa --- The expression on the faces of Grandpa and the child make the photo for me. Looks like a snapshot with the usual technical shortcomings regarding background and framing Must be nice to have a grandpa like that! Friends at school - a really refreshing and well composed picture of friendship , I like that a lot. Maybe changing the background a bit... but you knew that already ;-) Close as you can get romantic lightning and very nice gesture. My favorite children shot of closeness! The softness and slightly oof does not disturb me here. Close friends - a well seen moment here. I like the light on the hair and the pose. Seems to have some unnatural brown/yellow coloring and I would crop the picture to upright format. Home for the Holidays - Knowing the story helps because otherwise it could well be just a staged shot. The white hat and other clothes are interesting details as well as the people in the background. I like the frame too ;-) /^ --- An interesting title! I like the softness and the colors and the angle of the flower a lot. I give preference to more unusual interpretations of the theme close than a close-up shot, but otherwise it is very well done. Water Lilies Nice colors and technically well executed. I like the composition too. I would have liked a wi(l)der interpretation of the theme close. This is a beautiful flower shot but I do not see the story. more tomorrow greetings Markus The July PUG is available on my website AND on the komkon server. http://www.kirschten.de/PUG/05jul and http://pug.komkon.org Cheers Adelheid

http://www.kirschten.de/PUG/05jul More than 1/2 of the shots were taken with an ist-D (over 60% if you count the -Ds). Not sure if that's a first, but I found it interesting nonetheless. - Jerome

Adelheid, I really appreciate =so much= your work in keeping the PUG gallery going. PAWs and PESOs are nice, but there is something about the monthly collection of themed images that is especially interesting, provocative, and beautiful. Rick --- Adelheid v. K.
