Rick, I’m not so much shooting for one particular need, I just don’t have any good recent photos. I did want to get some photos of my full beard before I trimmed it back to what it is now. I also don’t have any decent photos of myself with long hair. I haven’t had long hair since 2004. I don’t know how much longer I’ll keep it. But mostly, I realized I don’t have any decent photos from the past several years so I wanted to get some current ones for whatever Ann, > On Dec 2, 2021, at 4:14 AM, ann sanfedele wrote: > > Alan - look at his eyes.. in many he has a twinkle. I certainly don’t lead with the body shots. With the surplus of resolution available when I can’t see what is actually in the frame, I was shooting extra loose knowing that I can crop in on just the face and still have plenty of pixels to play with. John, Let’s just say that no matter what one might think of my photography these photos are evidence of why I spend the vast majority of my time behind the camera rather than in front of it. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Live view, arrggh
Friendly critique: You have the camera set too low. It's pointing at your chest, so the viewer gets a good look up your nose and an uncomfortable feeling that you're leaning back. I think I understand you're trying to avoid the double chin look, but that can be done other ways. There could be a little too much paying attention to what the camera is doing and too little concentration on being the subject. Set up the frame, then get in it and go. Let the camera do its thing. 1. Put something in there to focus on, like the previously mentioned mop. Focus on it, then turn off the AF and remove the object. Might want to mark the floor. 2. Set the timer. 3. Hit your mark. 4. Check result. 5. Rinse and repeat. One frame at a time. Shoot loose with enough DOF to get in focus if you miss your spot a little. Crop to satisfaction. None of this requires live view. On 12/2/21 1:35 AM, Larry Colen wrote: I think I learned some things from my last shoot and am giving it another try tonight. I don’t know about you folks, but when I’m taking photos I don’t aim the camera and shut my eyes before pressing the shutter. At least not often. However, like I said things were working great tonight, until I realized that if I put the camera in single frame mode, I wouldn’t get a bunch of second frames with uncharged strobes, and the K-1 turned the flash off. Larry - When I've taken photos of myself for various reasons over the years I used a couple of different methods.. most recently I set a chair with a back on it a few feet from the camera and put a gray card or something like it at the level my head and shoulders would be .. then I took a photo of the card and checked the exposure , etc... changed the focus to manual so it wouldn't change.. set the self timer on to 10 sec .. and sat down. it never is right the first click of course... if I had had a remote I would have clicked away, changing my expression, etc.. also, you can set up a mirror next to the camera at the level of the lens and use a remote for the exposure .. it's more about teaching yourself how to model than anything else. You end up with a bunch of shots from which you can chose one.. ann On 12/1/2021 3:55 PM, John Sessoms wrote: If you're doing portraits, you should be able to use some kind of stand-in to set framing & focus. Yup. I’ve got a CD rack that I would put on a kitchen stool for that purpose https://photos.app.goo.gl/8t9PvCy8wTxUqZoZ7 But I find the real time feedback after each shot to be useful. I can see how moving my head affects the lighting, if I adjust something I can if I did something to totally blow the exposure, or if I accidentally moved something into the frame a lot more easily than walking all of the way around to look through the viewfinder each time. I will also note that autofocus is invaluable for self portraits. > > Just set it up so the distance to the flat is the same as the distance to > your eye when you take its place. > > At school they had a half mannequin, but I know some people who use one of > those head forms they sell in wig shops. > > On 12/1/2021 12:03 AM, Larry Colen wrote: >> I need some recent portraits, and have made some attempts at selfies. There is some level of challenge to getting someone over here when I’m doing this. I’m also experimenting with lighting. I currently have the external monitor plugged in and have a remote trigger, so I’ll take a photo and look at it on the display during preview. > > Alan C > > On 01-Dec-21 07:03 AM, Larry Colen wrote: >> I need some recent portraits, and have made some attempts at selfies. The things people do! How about asking someone else to press the shutter? Deeper sigh. Live view, arrggh
I need some recent portraits, and have made some attempts at selfies. It’s extra challenging when you can’t see what the camera does. I had the clever idea that I can plug an external monitor into the HDMI and use that for framing etc. It *almost* works. Unfortunately, if I set the camera’s exposure to use strobes the live view is so dark it won’t auto focus. Even when I put it on manual focus, it often refuses to fire the shutter. Also the screen is so dark, it’s damn near useless for live view. And there is no way at all to change things so that you can use live view with a flash.
