Re: ME Super diagnosis needed

2016-06-04 Thread Chris Mitchell
Yes Brian, mine still works as it's supposed to, but I stick to the "mostly
useless" statement! With any other MF lens, it's an ME Super with focus
confirmation so still handy. I'm surprised that Pentax never made a MF
version of that lens. I wonder where they got the optics from?

Re: ME Super diagnosis needed

2016-06-04 Thread Alan C
I have a working black P30 too. I would probably still shoot some film if
there was a local photo lab still in operation. They used to develop &
digitise a 24exp. film for about $10. If I shot film now I would either have
to drive 200km to take advantage of their 2hour service or send the films
off by post. I really wouldn't bother to have old film cameras serviced any
more. Thank goodness for digital.

I believe Eric Hendrickson still does CLA's on ME Supers. I replaced
mine with a very clean black model that had been recently serviced.
Though I shoot a lot of film still it does not get much use - honors go
the the Mz-S and Pz-1p.

Apparently the grease on the many levers & pivots hardens with time,
causing the problem. I tried leaving them in the sun which helped for a
while but the problem recurred after a couple of hours.

There are quite a few techs that can still do a CLA on the mechanical
parts. If any of the electronics are bad you're kind of out of luck.
Unfortunately the only one I've used recently is in Tenn. and you being
in SA could probably buy a working ME Super for less than the shipping
charges.

Re: ME Super diagnosis needed

2016-06-03 Thread Alan C
I have 3 ME Supers. (One bought new & the other two from a job lot I
bought). One still works perfectly, one doesn't fire occasionally & the
third fires only intermittently. From what I have read, a CLA (Clean, Lube &
Adjust) service is necessary. Are there still techs who can do that?
Apparently the grease on the many levers & pivots hardens with time, causing
the problem. I tried leaving them in the sun which helped for a while but
the problem recurred after a couple of hours.

Spank it.
Seriously.
Hold it my the lens and smack it against the palm of your hand.
Failing that, send it back to the seller. I'm pretty sure I have one of
those sitting around. I think it's even a black one.

Wasn't that for when the mirror stuck _up_? I seem to remember having this
problem with mine and it was because the film transport sprockets had somehow
become out of sync with the rest of the mechanism. Turning them with a
thumbnail, until they locked, fixed it.

God ideas. Haven't worked. It seems to like being spanked. Just asks for more. And when I
turn the film sprocket, it just free-wheels. I tried "rewinding" the
thumbnail-on-sprocket trick, still no change. I am thinking it is an issue with the
shutter release per se. The shutter release seems to be cocked and ready but there is no
resistance when I depress the release.

I'll contact the seller - I got most of my money's worth just with the lens,

Spank it.
Seriously.
Hold it my the lens and smack it against the palm of your hand.
Failing that, send it back to the seller. I'm pretty sure I have one of
those sitting around. I think it's even a black one.

Frankly, if it was me I would return it and get a different one rather than
risk a repair. I've got an ME kit that is absolutely mint (everything in
box). Can't remember if it is a Super or not. I'll probably advertise it on
APUG.

Did it advance all the way? Try advancing it till it stops if you haven't

ME Super diagnosis needed

2016-06-01 Thread Stanley Halpin
So I bought an eBay ME Super. Looks great, has a fine PK-M 50/1.7.

My first Pentax was an ME Super with 50/1.7. But it was a while ago.

Does anybody remember what to do if the mirror & shutter are frozen in firing
position? I.e., mirror down, shutter and film advance not responding.

It came with no batteries, I installed fresh, made no difference. A casual
inspection shows no signs of corrosion in the battery compartment.

Suggestions?
