Agreed, K10D.

Solid, great finder, layout is good, and submenus are not as buried as
my Nikons, which have many, many trees.

Having had both, well, for my glasses-shod eyes the MX viewfinder has
too much magnification and too little eye relief. It is nice and
bright. ;-)

The K10D viewfinder is about a half stop brighter than the *ist DS
and the screen has a slightly nicer focusing texture. That said, I'm
probably a little less sensitive to these things than to the overall
viewability of the focusing system for framing .. I have no problems
focusing manually with either, presuming a lens with good wide open
contrast and sharpness is fitted. I find it really annoying when I
have to keep moving my eye around just to see what's in the
viewfinder at the edges rather than being able to take it all in with
a glance.

I should add too that the K10D is quite a bit heavier and bigger than
K100D/DS etc.
It's worth mentioning I thought.

I'd like just add:
- the same quality viewfinder as on istDS and unlike on istDS the
eyepiece seems to be multicoated again! Still can't compare with MX's
viewfinder, though. ;-)

The quality of the viewfinder was a deciding factor for me when I was in
the market for a DSLR and I opted for istDS over K100D because of that
(most of my pictures are focused manually). However if you tend to use
AF it's probably irrelevant.

Cheers,

Peter

The K100D Super is an upgrade to the K100D which enables using the
DA* lenses' in-lens focus motors. I don't know that it's actually
shipped yet.

The DS model has pentaprism viewfinder optics as well as a larger RAW
buffer. The K100D has improved focusing speed, recalibrated JPEG
rendering and image stabilization.

I didn't feel the K100D offered enough over the DS to be worth it as
an upgrade purchase, particularly given the downgrade in RAW buffer
space and viewfinder optics. Either will produce the same quality
photos, however, and if you were enough with the DS the K100D should
not get in your way other than if you do sequence photography very
often.

The K10D is another matter entirely. A short list of improvements:

- far faster writing to storage, even with the same speed card
- far more accurate metering calibration
- much faster autofocus
- weather sealing
- no useless (to me) program preset modes
- more useful exposure modes ... Sv, TAv, program line
- better controls
- 29% more linear resolution
- more controls
- more customizable control configuration
- even better image stabilization than the K100D
- front and rear IR remote sensors for wireless tripod operation

One minor detail: the DS/DS2 models were the last Pentax DSLRs which
supported old-fashioned, straight TTL flash metering, with external
flash units. The K100D and K10D series support only P-TTL dedicated
flash metering. (Any of them can be used with appropriate non-
dedicated flash units, of course.)

There's lots more. The K10D is well worth the extra money to me. I
still have one of my DS bodies and I use it now and then for tabletop
work, but the K10D is what I grab the vast majority of the time.

My *ist DS was stolen - need new gear

2007-07-14 Thread Glen Berry
I recently had my Pentax *ist DS stolen, along with my Pentax F 50/2.8
Macro lens, and a 2 Gig SD card. Insurance will cover part of the cost
of replacing the gear. For now, I just need to figure out which camera
body to replace the DS with.

B&H Photo only lists the K10D and K100D models. The Pentax web site for
the USA lists 4 models. K10D, K100D, K100D Super, and K110. I think I
can live without the K110D option, but what about the K100D Super? What
does it offer above the basic K100D? Should I look for that model
someplace other than B&H?

Can someone who has used both cameras please tell me what to expect when
moving from the DS to the K100 or K100 Super? Are there any
disadvantages at all to these, compared to the older DS?

Likewise, can someone compare using a DS with using a K10D? Is the PRIME
chip really much benefit in this model? Are the extra megapixels really
that useful?

I'd like to have the K10D, but I'm not sure if I can raise enough money
on short notice to get one before an event I'm attending on July 21st. I
might have to settle for one of the K100 or K110 variants, assuming I
can live with their feature set.

thanks,
Glen
