Re: OT: New Olympus Micro Four Thirds announcement
Steve, No matter whether there is a mirror in it or not, the camera will be at least as thick as a Pentax ME to mount a K-mount lens, which requires an ~45mm mount register. And the lenses are bulkier than they would be if the mount register were less as a consequence. The advantage of microFT is that the mount register is only 20mm vs 40mm so lenses built for microFT will be substantially smaller and lighter than lenses built for FT, even though the sensor format is the same. For instance, since the normal for FT is a 25mm lens, you can build a symmetrical design 25mm f/1.4 which will be FAR smaller than the inverted-telephoto design required for the SLR mount. A 21mm f/2 lens could be the same size or smaller than the DA21. An L1 body (which is a mostly rectangular box) with the FT mount register is 5.03 cm (1.98 inches) thick at the mount. A microFT L1 body could be 1.1 inches thick ... thinner than a Leica M. Godfrey On Aug 10, 2008, at 1:49 PM, Steve Desjardins wrote: > "Slim" might be the wrong word. Small? Light? It would be interesting to have slim EVF camera that would take the DA limiteds. I still like to carry the DS with the DA 40. I want a fine quality camera, as small and as light as possible (but not too small and light to be sensibly handle-able) that produces the quality I need with responsiveness, sensitivity, practical features and a sensibly complete line of top quality lenses (I don't need focal length coverage for every extreme known to photography, nor do I need to record black cats in unlit coal mines on any regular basis without being able to truck in some lights and a generator..). I know what I put in my brief is feasible with existing technology available now, and at a not astronomical price point. I hope they do it right. Interesting. There is really no equivalent camera for the role the Leica RFs played in the film age. (The M8 is not doing it) Maybe this could. Oly can build a nice camera. As long as you can adapt M and LTM lenses I think it's going to be a hit. It'll finally show the promise of the 4/3rds format for super-compact largish sensor cameras. This is the sort of thing a lot of people have been waiting for, a Leica CL digital. I'd like to see Oly do a Ricoh GX100-style EVF for this (removable and tiltable EVF that fits a standard hotshoe) I'd be interested in one of these with a 20mm f2 lens on it (Say a rehash of the OM 21/2).
