Re: OT: New Olympus Micro Four Thirds announcement

2008-08-10 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Steve,

No matter whether there is a mirror in it or not, the camera will be
at least as thick as a Pentax ME to mount a K-mount lens, which
requires an ~45mm mount register. And the lenses are bulkier than they
would be if the mount register were less as a consequence.

The advantage of microFT is that the mount register is only 20mm vs
40mm so lenses built for microFT will be substantially smaller and
lighter than lenses built for FT, even though the sensor format is the
same. For instance, since the normal for FT is a 25mm lens, you can
build a symmetrical design 25mm f/1.4 which will be FAR smaller than
the inverted-telephoto design required for the SLR mount. A 21mm f/2
lens could be the same size or smaller than the DA21.

An L1 body (which is a mostly rectangular box) with the FT mount
register is 5.03 cm (1.98 inches) thick at the mount. A microFT L1
body could be 1.1 inches thick ... thinner than a Leica M.

"Slim" might be the wrong word. Small? Light? It doesn't have to fit
in my pocket, but I'd be curious how small a camera you could build
around a K mount lens.

As I said, I'd prefer to skip that debate: The important thing is that,
overhyped or not, the majority of the camera-buying public has bought
into the hype, and that spells trouble for the Four-Thirds system unless
they can find another niche. They may have done so.

I find the whole "full frame" fanaticism thing such overbloated,
overhyped, overmarketed nonsense it nauseates me.

I want a fine quality camera, as small and as light as possible (but
not too small and light to be sensibly handle-able) that produces the
quality I need with responsiveness, sensitivity, practical features
and a sensibly complete line of top quality lenses (I don't need focal
length coverage for every extreme known to photography, nor do I need
to record black cats in unlit coal mines on any regular basis without
being able to truck in some lights and a generator..).

I know what I put in my brief is feasible with existing technology
available now, and at a not astronomical price point. I hope they do
it right. If they do, my daily camera baggage will become much
lighter. :-)

Interesting. There is really no equivalent camera for the role the
Leica RFs played in the film age. (The M8 is not doing it) Maybe this
could. Oly can build a nice camera. I was really happy with the E-10 I
had, although I am less pleased with the images I get from the Evolt 300
I have at school.

Probably most of you heard about the new Micro Four Thirds system. Long

story short: Oly/Pana is working on an interchangeable compact camera
:D

I believe this will bring a 'revolution' to low-price segment of
photography by creating a new 'category', the interchangeable compacts

(kicking bridge category in the rear) or it will fail and will be just
a
bad experiment.

What do you think? Will it influence the DSLR market anyhow?

If they build a camera per the brief I sent them a few months ago, I
could do 90% or more of my work with it instead of bulkier, heavier,
noisier SLRs.

I personally don't really want it to be low-price if that implies some
kind of consumer quality bridge camera. I want a professional quality
camera, akin to what I used to work with in my Leica Ms, with lenses
to match. I know Olympus and Panasonic/Leica have the optics
experience to do it. What the decide upon per the market is the
question.

As long as you can adapt M and LTM lenses I think it's going to be a
hit. It'll finally show the promise of the 4/3rds format for
super-compact largish sensor cameras. This is the sort of thing a lot

Oly do a Ricoh GX100-style EVF for this (removable and tiltable EVF
that fits a standard hotshoe)

I'd be interested in one of these with a 20mm f2 lens on it (Say a
rehash of the OM 21/2). Especially if it has in-body IS.

OT: New Olympus Micro Four Thirds announcement

2008-08-05 Thread Timber
Probably most of you heard about the new Micro Four Thirds system. Long
story short: Oly/Pana is working on an interchangeable compact camera :D

I believe this will bring a 'revolution' to low-price segment of
photography by creating a new 'category', the interchangeable compacts
(kicking bridge category in the rear) or it will fail and will be just a
bad experiment.

What do you think? Will it influence the DSLR market anyhow?
