RE: OT: Which Camera Bag

2001-07-16 Thread John Francis

I'm very happy with my LowePro AW bag. I didn't buy the largest
one - I settled for one size down, which they claim fits under all
airline seats. When I'm travelling away from home this is one of
my carry-on bags. It can be persuaded to carry:

  o Two bodies (PZ-1p or MX+winder sized)

  o 300/2.8, 80-200/2.8, 28-105, 50mm, 21-35

  o AF500 flash, Sigma 1.4AF, A1.4-L AF 1.7x TCs.

o Assorted spare batteries, lens body caps, etc.

o A reasonable amount of film (20 rolls and upwards).

o Waterproof covers for using the big glass in the rain

o A plastic poncho for the photographer.

o a monopod (attached using the outside straps)

Fitting the 300/2.8 in is a bit of a squeeze, but when I get to my
destination I have a separate bag to carry that in (although it is
usually to be found on the monopod).

The fold-out waterproof cover for the bag seems to work quiter well.

You might also consider Tenba if water resistance is priority.

Sorry that this is OT.

I now need a new camera bag - my Lowepro Nova 3 is no longer big enough for
2 SLR bodies and lenses. I'm fairly sure that a Nova 4 would just be large
enough, but I'm not keen to buy another Nova series bag as my Nova 3 let in
water when I spent 3hrs walking in the rain. I've also discounted the
street
and field reporter range - as the top flap doesn't have a zip to keep the
dust out.

I'm considering mail-ordering a Tamrac Pro System 8 Model 608 which is
supposed to be water proof. I have a few questions:

1) Does it come with a good selection of movable dividers.
2) Are the dividers suitable for 2 SLRs (with lenses mounted) positioned
vertically, lens down.
3) Does the lens gate system cope with large diameter (72mm filter thread)
lenses.
4) Does it really keep the water out.

Any other info (or other brand/model suggestions) would be much
appreciated.

(I promise to be on topic next time I ask a question)

If you're happy with LowePro gear you could take a look at their AW series. I
have a Compact AW which is one of the lesser-astronomically-priced models
and it suits me pretty well (it's a great medium format bag). I also have a Nova
3 which I grew out of (it still makes a good travelling light bag).

My requirements were a little different from yours however; I wanted a bag
where I could access anything without having to screw around with multiple
layers of equipment. I was getting very frustrated with my Nova 3 today
because of all the gear I'd tried to cram into it :)

Cheers,

Nova 3 when travelling light? I almost always travel with a Nova 1.
I was recently on holiday with A24/2.8, M35/2, M85/2 plus ME Super
with MEII winder without layers of equipment. I can also carry a
Cokin P holder with 49 and 52 rings and an orange and a linear
polariser. (Plus the obligatory spare set of batteries, an incident
meter and a hotshoe spirit level.) It gets a bit fiddly when you try
to use the filters, but aren't they always?

I suppose it's because I usually go without flash. As soon as I try
to fit in the Vivitar 283 as well, it's a whole different story.
