My card reader in my tower is slow too. With SDHC, I'm in the market for a

My PC has a SD reader in it. Like most built-in readers it's
convenient but rather much on the slow side. I use my Sandisk 12-in-1
reader instead.

yeah they have several models, one better for CF, one for SD and this
one optimized for MS

>

Beware, old benchmark, there was a chip revision and Digisol recalled
for replacement after the 300x CF issue. I can confirm the 19 MB/s for
SDHC though and I am pretty content with that seeing it is a SanDisk
20 MB/s edition for whatever that means as there is opinion floating
around the net that the 30 MB/s isn't much faster and the 20 can come
clos eto 30 on peak, too... personally I just buy SanDisk for
reliability and Digisol because everyone on amazon seemed so happy
with it... it is a card reader and not a lens, after all.

Speaking of which, happy happy joy joy micro enablement, I scored a
new B+W Käsemann slim build circular polarizer for less than 40% of
amazon =)

YMMV, of course. My new(-ish) notebook - a Compaq 8710w - has a built-in
card reader for SD,MS/Pro,MMC & XD cards. None of the documentation even
so much as mentions SDHC, so I was prepared for disappointment. But rather
to my surprise it has no problems with the 8GB Transcend SDHC cards I use.

I haven't actually done any serious speed tests; all I know is that it is
a whole lot faster than the USB 1.0 interface I had on my old computer.

the MacBook Pro SD reader is pretty fast; Apple says it can do 30 MBps

Re: OT Card reader question

2010-06-08 Thread John Sessoms
With multiple cards it's less of a pain to use an external reader than
having to shuffle them all through the camera to download.

Insert the card, turn the camera on, connect it to the computer,
download, disconnect, turn the camera off, remove the card ...

rinse & repeat.

And it sucks battery power. If the battery dies during the download, it
can sometimes corrupt the images on the card.

Plus you can't use the camera until you recharge the battery.

From: Ann Sanfedele

dumb question, maybe

why do yo have to use a card reader at all? just plug the camera into
the computer, no?

then it doesn't matter what size card you have , right?

years ago came with a single card reader (USB 2.0 is usually the clue)
in each package. Only 1/2 inch wider and 3/4 in ch longer than the
card itself. Leave one plugged into the hub on the iMac, the other
goes with my MacBook wherever it goes.

That's what I did, too. Several times, in fact. A few months after
SDHC came out, I got a 4GB card. It wouldn't work with my reader, so
I got another reader. It worked with that one. Now 8GB and higher
are out and I find my fancy-schmancy reader that handles 4GB cards
just fine won't handle one larger. So I'll go get another one. At
US$ 10 or so each, it's not that big a hassle, apart from the extra
metallic nasties headed to the dump.

It's usually pretty easy, put a SDHC card in the reader and see if it
reads it. If it's not compatible it won't. Just don't so something
silly like format it. New readers ability to read SDHC is now a selling
point, so you can hardly go wrong there.

the 8gig CFII Sandisk Ultra II card i was interested in. I know that
works on my reader.
