Probably.

I went along to the Friends' Room at the NMM today to get some quiet time
and space to do my French homework and found it behind several layers of
defensive concrete walls and metal fencing, guarded by troops in desert
camouflage. So I thought stuff that, I'm not getting frisked just so I can
have a double espresso while I write a load of old bollocks about
prostitution and art in fin-de-siecle Paris.

Thanks Ann - it's always interesting to see people's 2nd choice when there's
such a popular 1st.

I think the secret to shooting crowds is to pick people out. In this case I
used an Olympus 50-200mm lens (which is 35mm equivalent of a 100-400mm)
principally so I could get something good of the torch as it passed - I did
not expect to see a handover. However when stuck on a tripod, as it was,
it's a very good lens for picking little scenes out of the crowd.

Another way of photographing crowds is to put a wide zoom on, something
starting at about 20mm in 35mm terms, and just get in there and shoot a lot.

Snaps be buggered, Bob. Those are some of the best pictures I've seen
for getting across the combination of the spectacle of a worldwide event
and the atmosphere of joy and involvement from the local community.

As others have said, the dog photograph is outstanding (and the light
at that hour doesn't hurt, either). But there are another half a dozen
shots there I'd be proud to have discovered when I had time for a review.
In particular I like the second shot of the handover - not only a perfect
documentary shot, but also capturing the personal side of things. That's
also true of the shot of the young torchbearer (and his family, I assume).
Then there's the crowd all looking up the street in anticipation, and the
final shot as the torch passes on.

That's the way of the world today, unfortunately.

I don't know if it got any news coverage in your area, but yesterday
the need for security was all too apparent: there was an attempt to
tackle the torchbearer which was prevented by the security escort.

RE: Olympic torch relay

2012-07-21 Thread Bob W
Thanks Derby, and everyone else who looked.

I was quite lucky with the spot I chose - I had no idea there was going to
be a handover there, and luckily there weren't many people around.

There are some photos of today's relay on the BBC which show some of the
more spectacular parts of Greenwich:
<http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18937691>

But they are all tightly controlled and closed to oiks like me at the
moment. You can see from the BBC pictures how much everything associated
with the Olympics has been battened down.

The young lad who took the torch in my pictures has just been interviewed on
the BBC while I was typing this email. I'll update the captions soon include
the names of the torchbearers.

The dog was a nice bonus!

Re: Olympic torch relay

2012-07-21 Thread Christine Aguila
Fantastic, Bob! You captured all the key historical moments very well. The
woman kissing the boy is sweet, but I'm with Stan--the dog shot is brilliant!
Just perfect that one.

I reminded Darrel yesterday that the Olympics starts next Friday and that I was
very excited about watching it. Then Darrel reminded me that our television
doesn't work--picture but no sound, though we can play DVDs and VHS tapes. We
may be getting a new television soon.

Cheers, Christine

I thought the Olymics had been rained out.

You did a great job of capturing the event. I especially like the
passing of the frame, and the last one, which shows the young runner
and the crowd lining the street.

I watched the torch pass through our town years ago, but was unable to
catch more than a glimpse -- no decent images.
