How'd ya miss last weekend, Dave?  Loads of snow here in Toronto on Saturday
- that's what I was out taking shots of:  Cabbagetown in the snow.  Of
course it all melted by Sunday or Monday.

OT: Out with a TLR

2001-12-23 Thread frank theriault

Hi, all,

Answering Malcolm's so-called OT thread a few moments ago reminded me
about a recent occurance.

I recall that (I think it was) two or three months ago, someone
mentioned that walking around with a honkin' big brick of a TLR around
your neck is bound to get you noticed, and that some will invariably
think you a pro, since not many tlr's are seen in public these days
(if they ever were).

Well, now that I've had a chance to walk around with my Yashica Mat for
a weekend (last weekend actually - my first roll of prints will be ready
tomorrow - yippee!), all I can say is, Wow, do you ever get noticed!
I had so many strangers ask me about/comment on the camera! And some of
them were cute young ladies too! (not that I got any phone numbers, but
at my age, just gettin' them to talk to ya is an accomplishment) I was
quite surprised by all the attention!

I heartily recommend it (I bet that 645's or 6x7's work just as well or
better) for anyone who's social life is lagging a bit.

regards,
frank

Re: OT: Out with a TLR

2001-12-23 Thread Bmacrae

Frank...

You betcha...I really get a lot of attention when I go out roaming with my
Yashica Mat 124G.

What a great camera. I had mine hotrodded with a new spit-image screen. I
love that camera. It forces you to take time with your shots and I appreciate
that (honestly, I never gotten used to the image being flipped in the
viewfinder). Because of this, I notice a lot of folks wanting to come up and
talk about it.

They don't even notice my LX...

So, Frank - lemme get this right - if I'm a sad old pudding with about as
much chance of scoring with a pouting young lady as Bin Laden has in
getting a mortgage on a nice little hideaway up in the mountains
somewhere (which I am), then the answer to all my prayers is to wander
around with a paperweight, er, Yashicamat TLR around my neck and have
them trotting after me like the Pied Piper

That's gotta be a great cartoon - I'll run one up over the holidays.

Cheers!

But not a Mamiya Universal, they tiptoe around you craning their necks to
look, but are very careful not to disturb your obviously important work. It
always bemused me. It seems like to the public that thing is the epitome of
the big black professional camera.

Re: OT: Out with a TLR

2001-12-23 Thread frank theriault

Hi, Cotty,

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: they'll still think you're a doddering old fart (at least they
do with me), BUT, they'll think you're an old fart with a cool camera.

AND, they'll talk to ya (at least they do with me). My favourite line, after
a snuggly young thing says, wow, that looks like an old camera, is to
respond, yup, it's almost as old as I am!

Of course, all I'm getting is a brief conversation, then a very polite
goodbye. That's about all the excitement I can take right now, anyway!

BTW, it's not only cute young thangs who were talking to me. Older (ie: my
age) women and men of all ages were commenting as well - I just wasn't
noticing them, that's all. ;-)

Finally, my Spotmatics are paperweights. The Mat is a brick. :-)

Look forward to seeing your cartoon!!

regards,
frank

I must have been doing something wrong back in the days when I
frequently wandered around with my ancient Rollei TLR. Never had a
female sweet young thing say a word to me about it, or even give me a
second glance. The only sweet young thing that ever tried to strike up a
conversation with me was a cute boy in Washington Square Park (Greenwich
Village) one day. I started leaving the camera home after that. :)

You must be too good looking. The older and uglier you are, the less threatening
and therefore more approachable you are. The TLR (or other medium format cam) is
just a further ice-breaker.

Try dressing down. An old ripped army surplus parka works for me.

I've been old and ugly for years, alas. Hasn't done me a bit of good.
And all of my clothes are pretty old and ratty, too.

Maybe I should just follow you around and pick up the leftovers. :)

But according to Frank it won't do him any good unless he is old and
ugly, and therefore unthreatening. You probably are safe. He will come
home alone.
