PESO - Half Dome Pow
I just got back from a little 3 1/2 - 4 day trip to Yosemite. I went 3 years ago in October and discovered then it was much easier to get in the fall. So I thought I'd try it again. Only this time it was MUCH colder and I found it hard to walk around and take shots, I got so chilled. The second day it warmed up a little and there were clouds! (The first day and three years ago there were none, which is-not-good.) Yosemite is dynamic range problem, the rocks reflect back a lot of light and the pine trees are very dark. Three years ago I blew out tons of shots. This time around I used exposure lock as much as possible. Made a big difference. The title of this is more how I feel about it than anything -- that there were clouds and that exposure lock was helping me solving the bright rock problem. This Half Dome taken in a field near Camp Curry. Not a preferred place to take it. Probably because nothing shows scale. The only thing that shows scale is that those little green things on top are pine trees. http://www.mapphotography.com/PAWS/pages/halfdomepow.htm Comments welcome. Marnie aka Doe :-) - We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them. Sasha, Lovely picture, lovely landscape. The snow is about perfect in adding a level of excitement/interest. I'm still undecided on the clouds at the top of the mountain. They add something, but also obscure a sharp edge. I also see some other wonderful images in your flicker set. That was a very productive trip! Regards, Bob S. Re: peso - half dome
Sasha, I really like this! It's unusual to see a fresh Half Dome pic, and this is one. If you are in the mood to play with it... you could try playing with curves to brighten the cliff face and snow somewhat, keeping the wonderful brooding clouds as they are. One might also increase saturation on the cliff face. Hi Marnie- You got me curious and I started looking through the menus on the Pentax. And yup, there's on/off settings for both auto exposure lock w/ AF lock and linking the auto exposure w/ the AF point. OTOH, I wonder if I'm doing something wrong when I use the AE-L function to meter off something brighter/darker and then focus/compose. - Pat On Sat, Oct 31, 2009 at 9:26 AM, wrote: > I just took tons and used exposure lock and it worked one half of the > time. I just didn't think of it soon enough. Nope, nothing wrong with using exposure lock. The other option is to use a graduated neutral density filter (think it is called that). Which is the more "photographer's way" to go. Several guys I talked to where using those in one particular situation we were all in (I need to get one). Some things, like Yosemite (light rock against sky, dark trees below) just have a dynamic range that is very challenging. I tried spot metering too, but that really didn't seem to help. (Thinking that all AE was really doing was overriding evaluative metering. I need to play with spot metering more too. Not sure why that didn't do it, actually.)
