PESO - Snow Flea

I went out Friday and visited a place where  like to take landscape shots. 
My main goal was to test stuff out - the 67 55mm f4,  Classic Pan 200 (the 
120 film back after a production hiatus), and the Ricoh TLR I recently got 
off eBay.  While tramping through the woods I noticed a bunch of snow fleas, 
so I set up with the *ist-D and the highest magnification setup I had on 
hand - a Kiron 105mm f2.8 macro and roughly 85mm of extension tubes.

These little critters are amazing - the run around in the snow in freezing 
temps. They are not fleas, but rather springtails (when they shoot off on 
their tails they move in a rather flea-like manner, so their name makes 
sense.)  They are a little bigger than real fleas, i.e. averaging 1.5 mm in 
length.  The tubes and the macro lens at closest focusing gave me decent 
magnification, though this image is cropped and the springtail is a bit 
small within it. It would of been nice to have gotten closer, but there are 
limits to what you can do in the field.

I was happy to see them as I had, till now, only read about them. 
Interestingly, they were only around one fallen tree, though I tramped by 
many a log on the way back to get them with the *ist-D.

As for the main mission - the 67 55 f4 is fabulous, the reissued Classic Pan 
is indeed faithful to the old (exact exposure / development times as used 
with the older version worked great) and the Ricoh TLR is a gas.

PESO - Snow crystals

Hi gang,

Today I finally got around to play with real snow in front of my macro 
setup.

After sifting through the results, this is what's left:

I've tried two optical combinations today. The M-28/2.8 reversed on 
bellows is quite nice, but it's a real PITA to work with bellows and 
manual apertures. Especially with thick gloves on. The upside is that 
the bellows allow varying magnification.
The other combination, A*200/4 with a FA50/1.4 reversed is still my 
preferred combo. However, I do stop the reversed lens down from 1.4 to 
2.0. According to the books, the reversed lens should be used wide 
open, but I find that stopping the FA down to 2.0 improves constrast a 
lot.

I like it, especially with the graffiti in there.  There's something
about comandeering the art of others (if one considers grafitti to be
art - I'm not so sure, personally) that's pretty cool.

Love those snow-covered trees and the thick blanket of snow along the
top of the wall - it all makes for great comp, IMHO.

PESO: Snow Geese

Visited Gray Lodge again this AM. The Snow Geese are finally in and in 
staggering numbers. Did the typical flock shooting and am offering three  
Representative grabs. I have a lot of editing yet to do and may offer a couple 
more..someday.
I should go for a "hide", but haven't had the urge to get out there at dawn 
when the temps are sinking and the wind picking up. One advantage of this 
degrading weather, however, is the absence of mosquitoes.

PESO - Snow crystal

Finally got around to play with the fluffy white stuff again. :-)

It's tricky to make the crystals look really glassy and transparent,
and yet display a bit of colour. This is one of the best I got today.

It seems that for each bout of snowy weather, there's a particular
type of... well, architecture... that dominates. This time there were
long stems with almost fern-like branching and pointy ends. Wish I had
taken more note of the outdoor temperature so I could compare to the
next time around.

Like the rich colors and composition, Dan.
The northern CA ski resorts are well under operation at this point and the snow 
forecast is being regarded as "perfect" for the always hoped for Thanksgiving 
week opening of the ski season.

Had some fun shooting the neighborhood kids today. The k-3 did a good job of 
focusing through the snowflakes. I've had trouble getting earlier Pentax 
cameras to lock on the main image in these conditions. This guy is our next

With all the talk about snow, I thought the list might be interested in 
seeing what the seasonal total is so far as of February 7th in Suttons Bay, 
Michigan.

This has been a 'good old' winter around here. We haven't had one like this 
since the 70's.


The keeper of the 'snow meter' is worried he won't have enought room on the 
meter to finish out the season!


Suttons Bay is located in the Leelanau Peninsula, in the northern part of 
the lower peninsula of Michigan, about 10 miles north of my place in 
Traverse City, Michigan.

Henk -  I have much better storm shots than this.. well, at least a lot 
I like much more myself.  That corner store is in the last of a number 
of reimaginings
in the 52 years I've lived here..  This is the worst. the hidious sign 
and lights are on all night..and it's style is definitely not in keeping 
with the lovely old
brownstones on our street that are landmarked.  It used to be a store 
that sold fresh veggies, bread and packaged food, ice cream etc.. more 
of a bodega

than a vape shop.

unusual and very effective background.

Way down south here in Philly, we had a small enough number of snowflakes that 
one could have counted them.

sin the snow. For example, I just found the Big Dipper.

I find it to be quite a mesmerizing image.

Ann, this is a fascinating picture with great colors and variation of
lights in the windows, combined with the snow flakes.
A finishing touch may be a slight tilting of the left to get
everything straight.

It's just what I saw -- shot on full auto with the flash turned on - 
though  I did crop just a wee bit off the bottom - and brightened it a 
bit .  I'm not
inclinded to touch it further  (no pun intended this time really!) 
especially since someone has already purchased a file to print for 
himself - which made my day yesterday.

Cool shot!  (no pun intended)

I've never heard of snow fleas, or if I have, I've forgotten about
them.  I didn't know there were any insects or arthropods (or whatever
that is) that lived in such cold environments.

I learned something new today.

Quite an amazing photo, too.  Geez, photographing something that small
seems to me quite a feat!

AFAIK Classic Pan was made by Forte in Hungary, and branded by Classic
Film, reseller of interesting emulsions. From Mark's comments, it
looks the new batch is the old Forte again (which is good, it's a nice
film!). Although before the "production hiatus", friends ordered their
Fortepan 400 once again (like we did before), and once again they sent
them Fortepan 200 instead (like they did before...). Refunding it all,
but it was sad :(

Cool pic Mark! I've been trying to do some more high mag macro stuff 
recently but keep getting frustrated with camera shake or lighting or 
both. Anyway, you've done pretty well here! Love the patterns in the ice 
as well as the cool critter (pun, sadly, intended). Next - balance one 
on a snowflake (-:
One thing I noticed is that there appears to be some chromatic 
abberation present - check the red fringe on the right of the 
collembolan as opposed to the blue/green on the left. Try fiddling with 
the raw converter or using the panotools plugin for this purpose.

Thanks, Frank - I had never actually saw them before. They were amazing to 
watch through the finder, as they ran on and in the snow - I guess they have 
some way of producing energy in the cold.

It was a challenge photographing them - especially since I'm not as immune 
to the cold as they are!

Hi Keith -
I was testing out JandC's Classic Pan. It is an older formulation B&W film, 
reported to be re-branded Forte Pan (?). They describe as a 'high silver 
content" film and liken it now discontinued Kodak Super XX (before my time - 
I never used it.)

It used to be dirt cheap but is now moderately priced.  I shoot it at ISO 
100 with a long, low agitation, high dilution development process that give 
great results - excellent latitude with great detail from the deepest 
shadows to the brightest highlights, good grain structure and acuatance.

I really like APX 100, which I use when CP200 is not available, but like the 
results from CP200 better. The negs are fairly dense, and even on the light 
table you can see the excellent detail. As noted in my earlier post - the 
factory shut down due to financial problems a while back, but is back up and 
running now and the film seems unaltered.

FWIW- the "Pan" in these films names refers to "Pan Chromatic" which means 
they respond to the full spectrum of visible light. Really old emulsions and 
some specialty films are sensitive only to a portion of visible spectrum, 
most common being  blue through green.

Thanks for the comment - it would be a feat to get one of these balanced on 
a snowflake, but they are about the same size.

You are right about the chromatic aberration - I had not noticed that. 
Interestingly, I can't see it after opening the raw file, but I used the 
'shadow's tool in Photoshop to bring up the detail in the dark insect, and 
the seems to have made the CA pop out more. I'll check out Panotools since 
I'd be more or less guessing on how to adjust it in the PS raw converter

Brilliant photographs, Jostein. It interesting that snow actually looks like
this at close range.
The only thing missing IMO is a pretty background - like a nice dark blue
colour.

I absolutely agree about the background. I'm experimenting with different
lighting techniques to achieve both a better background and more detail in the
surface of the crystal.

Photographing the little buggers is pretty straightforward, and not as 
cold as you may think. It was the flash setup that needed practising. 
This background will come in handy for other macro projects as well.

Guess I shouldn't say that I picked up the K 200/2.5 from KEH in
bargain condition for about $250.  When it showed up I had to grab it
quick.

I must admit that when he casually mentioned the fact that the great
sunset shot he posted recently wasn't entirely planned - he didn't

received their first snowfall.

I've been in the area in late June and still seen snow piled up in areas.
