I appreciate you looking and commenting - it is always good to really
look at an image see if there are things that can be done to it in
post to bring it to full potential. I think in this case, the water
just didn't have anything in it to strengthen the picture other than
serving as an ominous border to the spillway.

Re: PESO-Clementine Rainbow

2010-05-18 Thread Bruce Dayton
Hello Rob,

You bring up a good point. I was reading a thread on HDR recently
and that was one of the issues brought up - basically
that the compression of the dynamic range of an HDR image causes it to
look unnatural, and for some people that causes them to reject or
dislike it. Once could argue that exposure that causes you to
misinterpret the setting could have the same effect.

It's fine so long as there's limited ambiguity in the case of
otherwise un-manipulated images. For instance if I make a shot of my
back yard by moonlight it generally looks quite strange as often due
to its position in the sky the moon casts shadows that the sun

It was pleasing, I appreciated the composition and content but due to
the ambiguity developed by the exposure wondered quite what was going
on, I guess for a straight landscape that's a little unusual.

I did have a play and the water does show green but the contrast can
be maintained and the image still remains strong.

Re: PESO - Clementine Rainbow Round 2

2010-05-17 Thread John Sessoms
I think if it were my image I'd combine "Round 2" with the original as a
layer and apply a layer mask to confine the lightened area to the water
behind the dam and the one foreground tree on the lower right, leaving
the rest of the image as original.

The darkness of the rocks and the shadowed face makes the rainbow pop
out for me, but the lighter water works in the impoundment area.

From: Jack Davis

I think the original is more dramatic and concentrates the viewer's attention
on the falls.

Possible.

Lower Yosemite Falls produces them. Also Cumberland Falls State Resort
in Kentucky, Luna Island at Niagara Falls State Park and Waimea on
Hawaii's Big Island.

Info on-line says the color doesn't show up to the naked eye. The color
is too faint to activate the color cones so it just appears as a white
bow, but long exposures will reveal the colors.

No reason why mist from that spillway couldn't produce one if the
alignment was right.

According to Wikipedia, Durham, North Carolina is another "Famous
natural moonbow location". I grew up there and can't for the life of me
figure out where in Durham it would be?

Google doesn't help. Every hit that refers to Durham being a location to
observe moonbows refers back to the Wikipedia article sooner or later.

I'll have to look around a bit next time I head over there.

Bruce,
I chose not to comment about the dark surface of the lake, in favor of allowing
it to simply provide contrast to the dam overflow. I'd have probably taken a
look at a slight lightening just to avoid viewer "black hole" comments. ;)
Not a biggy to me.

Re: PESO-Clementine Rainbow

Well, unfortunately, since I replace a machine in the past year put
me on to Vista and then Windows 7. My calibration system was the
original Colorvision Spyder - and it was discontinued and is not
supported on Vista or Win7. So in short, I am running by eye
calibration right now. Calibration is on my list but there are
several things ahead of it in priority.

I have viewed the image on about 5 different systems/monitors and
have not noticed it to be darker than I intended. So far no one else
has commented on this being dark (of course, not that large of a
group have commented). Perhaps others will chime in.

I suppose there'll be people liking it as it but for me it looks like a
candidate for a composite of a properly expose water fall and one with the
rest exposed so as to be able to take in the surrounding details.
