_aren't_ as SFW. ;-) Actually, quite a few of my recent shots are
safe, particularly from this set.

Thanks, Dan!

Re: PESO - Contemplation

2006-04-15 Thread Cotty
http://not.contaxg.com/document.php?id=13083

Boris,

Seeing as I was about the only one here that liked this pic, I'll just
say again what a good shot it is. I think the composition is about
perfect for the scene, and the relative size of the girl is absolutely
fine. The overall feeling is one of 'the insignificance of man against
nature' and that is illustrated well here. I had no trouble spotting the
person in the frame, even in a low-res web version. I also think that,
printed nice and large, this pic would be a lovely one to hang on the
wall, but in no way does it detract by being smaller as a web image.

The only thing I can think of that might improve the shot would be to
expose the scene with a better pattern of breaking waves. This may or
may not have been possible, although the small section of breaker you
have captured looks like it was just about to expand, without getting
too close to the rocks. Maybe even breaking onto the rocks, with another
starting behind - I don't know, but just looking at patterns in the
water to find any way to make it even more interesting than it actually is.

I watched for quite some time a similar scene with my Leica CL and 40mm
Summicron with FP4 before I decided this was exactly the effect I wanted:

http://www.cottysnaps.com/snaps/landscapes/images/pic11.html

I was about 200 feet up and the beach was isolated, so no hope of
someone in the sand at lower right to give some scale, but I knew that,
so went with just nature creating patterns.

On a different day with more wind, you'd get lots of frothy water
crashing about, but then having a girl there might not work at all. The
pic you presented is a fine study of nature and the place we have as
human beings within it. Don't be disheartened by a few voices telling
you how 'it would work better if printed bigger' - that it may do, but
it works just as well for me as it is. Remember - make pictures for
yourself. If you are happy, then what else matters? One other person
likes it and that's a bonus :-)

Cheers,
  Cotty

Hi Boris,

This one doesn't work for me.
My first thought is that the woman is placed too far down in the
frame.
On second thought, it might not be crucial if not the breaking wave,
the green rocks and the woman forms a vertical line that pulls all the
weight of the composition into the right hand side of the frame.

There is also a diagonal in the direction where the woman is looking
from lower right to upper left, but it becomes weak by comparison.

Deduced purely by personal preference, of course...:-)

It works when it's a large print.
The person is just too small for a tine web image.
Some prints are meant to be large.
The only suggestion is to play around with the crop for the best

For me it's almost, but not quite. There are 2 centres of attention. The
first thing my eye is drawn to is the large rock in the lower right quadrant
- it's on an intersection of thirds, more or less. My eye is then caught by
the woman, more as a distraction than a strong element of the composition. I
feel that it would be improved compositionally if she'd had the good sense
to contemplate sitting on the rock, or if you had placed her on the
intersection of 3rds. The diagonals, the light, the colour and the textures
are very good though, as is the idea.

Not for me, Boris.
You've got some interesting elements, but the composition is weak.
Obviously, the rocks are the main feature here, right. The woman, as
captured, is actually a detriment - she's so small as to make you
concentrate on her trying to figure it out.

The water 'above' the rocks doesn't add anything in fact detracts as my
eye roams up there looking for added features - which aren't there.
A suggestion is to crop horizontally, just above the rocks vertically, to
the right of the rocks in the LLH corner - helps make the woman a little
more prominent.

Re: PESO - Contemplation

2006-04-14 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi

As others have said, I think this would work ok in a large print.

In addition, I would crop it more square than the original format
proportion. I find the rocks and business to the left of the frame
pulls my eye away from the person - sea primary focus. A square
crop, centering the circle of water enclosing the person, would be
stronger visually. Still needs a large print to pull it off.
