Re: PESO -- Fishin' at Sunset

2007-04-19 Thread Boris Liberman
Peter, it almost perfectly looks like a certain spot just 30 min drive
from my place... Are you sure you haven't been teleported there? ;-).

I have one major piece of critique to spill out here ;-). The way the
fishing rod (right word?) is directed - it seems wrong to me. Although
it is balanced nicely with the direction to which the little ship is
sailing, yet it does not make me feel that the shot is about fishing,
rather about sunset.

Just my cents.

Not that dishonest, it was close to that color. I just enhanced it a
little, it mostly shows in the blue, (that looked gray originally). of
the water. Then I may have upped the contrast a bit too much using
USM. I'm still playing with it.

Re: PESO -- Fishin' at Sunset

2007-04-16 Thread Tom C
Hi Peter,

Overall I like it. Velvia-like. :-)

I haven't said this is in the past. Many of your photos have a hard
granular effect to them when I view them that I don't see in other's photos
and often seem to have over darkened shadows.

This picture, obviously with silohouettes will lack shadow detail, and
handheld at 1/5 and f/3.5 may lack some definition.

I don't know if you're going for that kind of effect or if it's something in
the post-processing (sharpening?), or resizing alogorithm, or monitor
calibration, that's producing it. I don't know, maybe others don't notice
it.

It often gives an unnatural look. In this picture I find it mostly in the
background water. Lighting may play a part in that in this shot.

This was probably not the best shot to mention it on, but I thought I'd let
you know what I see.

PESO -- Fishin' at Sunset II

2007-04-16 Thread P. J. Alling
In light of a couple of comments I decided to look back at my proofs
and see if there wasn't another shot. It doesn't address everyones
suggestions but the framing is different, I cropped it as an 8x10 and
the image involved less post processing which seems to be building up in
the way the water is rendered. Still the same relatively high
saturation. This was taken a few seconds after the first.

Re: PESO -- Fishin' at Sunset II

2007-04-16 Thread ann sanfedele
Hi, PEte -

I just got back on list...
as to this crop .
Yikes - go back to the first one -

I agreed with Jack, though, it (number 1) seemed _too_ vivid be
interesting to see a print of it or the original
as you said you did up the saturation...

I think the structure of the first one works much better - the cropped
one looks, well...um, , cropped.

saturation. This was taken a few seconds after the first.

Man that is a heavy stark result. If that's the way you like it, then
it's right.

Much better, IMHO. I'd get rid of that black spot on the RH horizon.
