Re: PESO - Hacklemesh Weaver
I'm with Dan on this. 25250. I'm also in the 'live and let live' camp when it comes to spiders - but that doesn't extend to Sydney Funnel Webs. By a conincidence, Larry and I were visited on the sam eday by related species. Actually, that day, while I was shooting this guy in the middle of the day, I was rather busy. It was only later, in the evening, while trying to identify the type, that I realized it was she. Because she was gravid. (I think..) I am not a specialist, but this helpful website helped me to identify this Metaltella simoni (Hacklemesh Weaver) http://www.spiders.us/species/metaltella-simoni/ http://42graphy.org/misc/2015-03-spider/ Unfortunately, these photos were far from perfect. I was in a rush, and was shooting with the camera handheld, in a very unstable position. So, I just did the best I could in that situation. Thank you, Brian and Eric for your comments! Eric, to answer your question: I found her in a white box from some fancy mail-order cupcakes. The box had an insert made out of white foam. In the first photo, the spider is on that insert. The rest of the photos are inside the box itself. The light is the natural light (under the sun, or in the shadow of the box itself) Igor Eric Weir Sun, 29 Mar 2015 06:53:59 -0700 wrote: On Mar 28, 2015, at 5:50 PM, Igor PDML-StR pdml...@komkon.org wrote: I am not a specialist, but this helpful website helped me to identify this Metaltella simoni (Hacklemesh Weaver) http://www.spiders.us/species/metaltella-simoni/ http://42graphy.org/misc/2015-03-spider/ Unfortunately, these photos were far from perfect. Re: PESO - Hacklemesh Weaver
So is it poisonous or not? I generally take a live let live attitude towards creepy, crawly slithery critters, but I don't like poisonous spiders snakes! I'll tolerate 'em as long as they don't come around me. On 3/28/2015 5:50 PM, Igor PDML-StR wrote: Not for people with arachnophobia! Re: PESO - Hacklemesh Weaver
Thank you, Dan, Steve, and John for looking and responding! John, I don't think it is poisonous. Most spiders aren't poisonous. The website referenced by Steve actually describes only 2 that are really poisonous (and very questionable 2 more): http://bugguide.net/node/view/1954 I like spiders, and typically let them go when I find them. [*] I found this one inside one of the boxes in a big pile that had been sitting in my garage, while I was flattening them for recycling. After taking a few photos very quickly, I let this one out into the grass. What attracted my eye in this one is the pearl-like abdomen and the pattern on it. Igor --- [*] I posted this back in 2008: I had a spider that lived in the space between the kitchen sink and the window for several months, until I had to move out from that apartment. He was catching fruit flies. At some point I spent some 3 hours photographing it in action: http://42graphy.org/galleries/spider/ (sorry, I was stupid enough to make that gallery in Flash, and never got to redo it) John Sat, 28 Mar 2015 19:51:06 -0700 wrote: So is it poisonous or not? Steve, Thank you for the link to that site, it looks very interesting. I am not 100% sure, I based the identification on the pattern (and also on the fact that it is in Texas).
