The spray behind the rock makes this shot. I can almost hear the surf! The violence of the surf and spray and the harshness of the light complement each other. Very nice! Between #2 and 3, I prefer this one. The little tree on top of the left hill made me grin. I'd mess with the light some (in the "enhance" menu) using the "light/shadow" tool. The bright surf froth has dominated the meter and dulled the balance of the scene..on my monitor. Nice composition! We had decided to meet in a little town in Tennessee near the NC border, to hike in and photograph Mouse Creek Falls. We arose early, way before dawn, grabbed up all our gear and drove to the trailhead. It was somewhere in the mid-teens, Fahrenheit-wise, and the trail was up a pretty steep angle. The falls were three miles into the woods. Re: PESO - Rugged Coast
For me, there is a quality to this light - some of the harshness emphasizes the feeling there. I have a bunch of shots the other direction that don't look harsh, but have a totally different kind of feel to them. There is also the learning factor - applying techniques and seeing how they affect the image, etc. Shooting backlit and dealing with flare is an example. Some very cool shots can be obtained, but the lighting is very tricky. I'll post one or two of the others up for all to see. They may be more acceptable to many. I needed to hear the reaction to this one as it helps me learn more. I really appreciate your comments and others as well. -- Best regards, Bruce Thursday, December 7, 2006, 8:19:33 AM, you wrote: KW> Mark Roberts was responsible for this appearing on my LCD - >> The criticism I have is something over which you had no control: The >> light is too harsh to make this work really well. You are =really= fortunate to be in striking distance of such locations! Since you are, I would visit it again. For me, the shot lacks a center of interest. Certainly like the idea of it. The foreground, however, appears a lot like simply rubble and is the predominant element. That square/cube shaped rock in the background is peculiar and from the viewer's perspective, has an unnatural appearance. i've spent quite a bit of time cruising the west coast looking for 'rugged coastline' scenes, so can relate to collecting them. Re: PESO - Rugged Coast
I like it. It's different. Not your usual coastal pic. However, I think some of your blacks might be clipped. I'm looking at it on my laptop, so I can't be certain. But I'm thinking you could gain some shadow detail and still get some crushed blacks where you want them. Re: PESO - Rugged Coast
I like it mate, the only criticism I'd have is that perhaps the foreground rocks dominate just a little too strongly. I'd be tempted to experiment with different crops. Great exposure though and well spotted.
