This looks like another earthstar, geastrum triplex (collared earthstar

I don't know about the attraction of flies but it is indeed the case for
a number of mushrooms.

I'm also impressed by how many of you read our trip blog. (you're

For those of you who haven't seen it, my girlfriend and I have been

Thanks again for all the comments!

At the beginning of last month we were in Peru, on the coast. One
night I looked at the stars and realized we were pointing straight
south. By "the stars" I mean "my compass". And by "my compass" I mean
"the compass app on the iphone". Anyway, we were pointing straight
south, so I made this photo:

PESO - Stars of the Pond

2013-08-19 Thread George Sinos
This is an old photo that's been sitting around waiting for technology
that could clean it up.

It was taken with an old Pentax point and shoot. I forget the model
number, but I used to carry it around in the days before digital and
camera phones.

I scanned it a while back and the file has been sitting around waiting
for me to do something with it. LR5 did a pretty good job of noise
reduction in the time I was willing to spend on it. It'll probably
make a pretty nice small print.

Brilliant. Like some others, I do find the crooked horizon a bit distracting,
but that's a simple fix. Well done.

It did - but Ken and Tom beat me to it

Despite that - great shot. I'm going to have to look into StarStax.
I've been telling myself that I need to do some night sky photography
and it's about time I pulled the finger out (if this rain ever stops,
that is).

Re: OT PESO: Stars & Moons

2011-12-11 Thread David Savage
Thanks Bob.

The shots are taken 1 after the other (using my timer cable release).
The shots are then layered in a program called Starstax (free to
download & available for PC, Mac & Linux) which combined the multiple
1 minute startrails into 1 long one.

This is a handy technique for cameras that get noisy at long
exposures, or cameras that have no bulb mode (P&S for example).

Cheers,

Dave

The orb is created bye spinning some LED's on the end of a length of
wire. While spinning the LED's in a circle, you also walk around the
vertical centre of the "circle"

Image a hoola hoop balanced on its edge, & then turning it while it is upright.

That was a last minute addition. At first, I thought the guy was too
soft for this group. So there was no post processing.

I need to get Rush Limbaugh to explain why it is a good idea to waste
energy illuminating bird butts. A few years ago he was railing
against "dark sky nuts". I need to add some pictures of the
'Baltimore Nebula' that dominates the eastern horizon.

I really like the one of the guy at the red-lit console.

The series makes the problem of light pollution very evident, too.

PESO - Stars and Astronomers

2008-07-04 Thread Beaker
The Howard Astronomical League had an outing last Wednesday night.
The first successful event in quite a while. We tried the previous
Saturday. I got there just in time for a really hard downpour.
Wednesday was really nice weather- warm, no dew, and no clouds. I got
some pictures of stars, and astronomers.
Canon 10D, Tokina 12-24mm f4 lens wide open, exposures from 1/8 to 56
sec, ISO 100 to 400.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/sets/72157594414463840/

Next time, I'll try making RAW, ISO 200 exposures, and bracket to
find where the noise starts. Got to remember the Nikonos (sp?)
"viewfinder" ( no optics, just a frame with a cold shoe I use for
aiming with a pin hole lens.) The camera viewfinder is pretty much
useless for stars. The Tokina lets me cheat- set the lens to infinity
and let depth of field do its magic.

[The moon pictures were made last year]
