PESO -- Why Deer Lake is.

2016-01-30 Thread P.J. Alling

Just one more shot from Deer Lake.

I took a number of vertical and horizontal images of this and as I
didn't have a tripod, and there was no convenient support to lean up
against this is the only image that came out moderately sharp. So the
decision of orientation was made for me. It's probably the best
composition anyway. Yes, I realize that might not be saying much.

PS. Enjoying the photo nevertheless.

It's typical of a lot of U.S. vans from the late seventies, when vans
with airbrushed murals and shag rug interiors were the hot rods of
the day. I shot a few of them for mags like "Custom Vans" back in the
day. Most made little sense from an artistic or conceptual point of
view. They were the product of skilled but undereducated craftsmen.
The van owners held van events and formed clubs. Then, poof! They
were gone.

I think it has something to do with tattoo culture. That's what the
artwork looks like.

I remember all that. Those painted van clubs are still around & still hold
events. Not as "newsworthy" perhaps as during their heyday.

What image ended up painted on individual vans reflected the van owner's
other interests (to the extent it was not limited by the painter's
ability). That particular image looked to me like it came out of a tattoo
parlor.

Those might be painted by the owners. There are many manufacturers who would
(maybe still do) make your car payments if you allowed them to paint your car
to advertise their products. Seen a few on the road, mostly Beetles. I think it
must not have paid companies to do it, as I believe it has gone away.

More cost effective to pay urban bus companies for a 'Wrap' ad.

don't find it as a quote from any book or poem. Only connection that I
can find is as a song by a band called "The Great Unknown" and the
artwork seems to bear little relation to that. Curious.

Re: PESO - Why...

What makes it for me is the texture of the stone. I don't know how
difficult it would be to patch out that little splotch of white stuff at
the three o'clock position and the tiny one just a little above nine
o'clock, but if it were my image, I figure it would certainly be worth a
try.

Nice shot, splotches notwithstanding.

I think it's the almost symmetrical composition that makes it work. If
the other pipe had a red cap, the image wouldn't be as interesting (or
maybe that's over-analyzing it)

Kind of, yes. Both the combination of the base of the stone not being exactly
square with the bottom of the frame and the missing red cap disturb what would
otherwise be pleasing simple summitry.

metal value. If you have a hundred thousand people collecting and
dropping them off you get a metric ton of high quality aluminum alloy in

I just read a statement made by the representative for Apple in

marketing. maybe Fovi has come to the same conclusion. The other

This photo made me think.
Maybe I'd better shut up about it. Last time I had some brain activity, it
resulted in the American fence thread going wild.
That's the main problem with me, I never know when to shut up ;-)

Who paid for that bottle Dag? You did, and if I decide to purchase from FOVI
(the Norwegian Pentax pusher), I will pay for it too. That's why I probably
will buy from another source. I've found one other source who throws in a DA
50-200 for the same price as FOVI's list price.

So basically FOVI will loose my money because of this. That's a pity IMO. We
need them, and I need them, but I prefer to make my own designer wine
labels.

Am I missing something here? Ah, the general service if things goes wrong,
off course. The problem is that I can't afford to pay for something I hope I
will never use. I'm a cheap bastard ;-)

Sorry if I spoil your fun Dag. The bottle sure looks cool. It may even taste
good. But this was my instinct reaction.

Amazing, the distributors here prefer us to beg for product, a
purchase/work order can be easily ignored. Fortunately the K10D was
easy to buy, I walked into a shop a couple of days after its official
release and purchased over the counter.

Hi!

Here's a shot of my grand daughter running toward me at full tilt on
Halloween. Background is too busy, but I still like it.
I've found for shooting a running child or even people walking on the
street, continuous autofocus can be a real boon. Particularly when I'm
feeling a bit lazy and don't want to do it manually.

He-he... I remember having tried the sport mode of my MZ-6 some years
ago... Same result, just at the time Galia was crawling straight into
the lens...

Excellent... I should add that even leaving AF at auto (green mode)
yields good results...

Re: PESO: Why I like continuous autofocus

2005-11-04 Thread pnstenquist
To use continuous autofocus with running children, I select the autofocus
sensor manually, with the focus knob turned to the selective position. Here I
believe I was using the sensor one step above the middle with the camera
vertical. Sometimes I go two steps above the middle position. I push the
shutter halfway, keep the moving child in frame with the focus point on his or
her head and push it all the way when I have the shot I want. The camera will
continue to adjust focus as the child moves.

Steady, please advise me as to how you use continuous AF in that manner,
and do you let the camera pick its own AF sensor or not? I often
photograph running children and would really like to improve my yield of
sharp shots.

I'm using an *istD, and I think you are also, aren't you?

RE: PESO: Why I get up early/Seney Nat'l Wildlife Refuge

2005-10-19 Thread william sawyer
The AV material they use now for public intro to the refuge is excellent, a
first class slide show containing many images from known photographers such
as Carl Sams and his wife. See it if you haven't already. Planck can only
enhance it.

I bought a bicycle a few years ago specifically for traveling some of the
back roads in that refuge. At nearly 100,000 acres, it's supposed to be the
largest refuge east of the Mississippi. This is the first year in many that
I could not get away to go up there for a week or so. I need a better
job...

Thanks Bill.

Partially in return for having the run of the Refuge, Planck is going to
supply the superintendent with some of his images to ugrade/update the AV
material the public gets to see.

The public drive route is such a small percentage of the total refuge! I was
told there are over 150 square miles of refuge with around 100 miles of
road.

I like it just as is, Ken. It very much captures the feel of the place.

It's an awesome shot Ken. I don't think it could be improved.

I think the fact that the bright spot is right at the edge of the frame
is a little distracting but you couldn't help it without ruining the
spacing between the trees.

Very well done.

Absolutely beautiful Ken. Great way to start my Monday morning... Thanks!

This particular version looks pixelated on my screen, especially in the
lower middle right where it appears the fog is rising in front of the
background trees... just wanted to let you know...

Where was it from?
