Good?

You seem to be under a misapprehension. There's nothing in the
guidelines that says submissions have to be good...

Anyway - if it's taken with a Pentax it has to be good by definition.
Doesn't it?

Thanks, Brian. Excellent stuff. There certainly are many talented
photographers in the group. Bob's looking for a mate immediately caught my
eye too. From the thumbnail I initially thought Gerrit's Done Fishing was

Re: July Extra PUG - Open Gallery - is UP

2013-07-23 Thread Darren Addy
Really enjoyed this whole gallery, which I think is one of the best I
have seen since becoming familiar with the PUG. (I promise I will have
entries again. one day soon.)

There were really just too many, one could say things about all of them.

My fav would have to be Brian Walter's postcard perfect The
Struggle, with Dario's How It Was and Rick Wormer's Playing at the
edge of the Sand. All just gorgeous.
I loved the technical perfection of AnnSan's Soho Shadows (which would
also make a lovely cyanotype print, IMHO) along with Bob Sullivan's
Looking for a Mate and Patrick Temmerman's Morning Fog. I would
also be happy to claim Zos' Random Butterfly and Gerrit Visser's
Done Fishing as my own.

Special mention goes to Calvary by Matthew Hunt for capturing FOUR
crosses (I only saw three on my first viewing, but then I've always
been a bit slow). Well done. And whether it was purposeful or not, the
placing of Jorge Zaven Kurkdjian's lovely Yerevan immediately after
Calvary made me see three crosses in his image, as well.

Wonderful stuff and very inspirational (everyone)!

RE: July Extra PUG - Open Gallery - is UP

2013-07-23 Thread Gerrit Visser
I looked and looked, difficult to pick fav's but they are, in no particular
order:

Looking for a Mate, Bob Sullivan
Morning Fog, Patrick Temmerman
Soho Shadows, Ann Sanfedele
Playing at the Edge of the Sky, Rick Womer

I had a hand in Bruce's Test Shot one as a sand bag so it wouldn't seem
appropriate to vote for it, otherwise I would have it on my list :-)

Hi, Lucas. Thanks for the comments. My original intent was to show
the uselessness of the U.S. penny. I find them to be a nuisance, as
quite a few others do as well. I usually end up with a pocketful of
them, the kid behind the counter always gives me dirty looks when I'm
counting them out, and my wife bugs me about leaving little piles of
them around the house. However, there were a few unintended elements
to the photo which you have pointed out. All of which can obviously
impart certain opinions of uselessness.

As far as composition goes, I basically took the change out of my
pocket, removed everything except the pennies, and then slapped them
down a piece of paper. I took about ten or twelve photos from
different angles and selected this one for the PUG. Thanks again.
Much appreciated.

Thanks Addy - your hard work is appreciated many times over.

Just had a look through, and a great gallery for sure. Some lovely pics
in there.

Two that caught my eye for totally different reasons.

Anne's 'Bad Rack' - totally captures the 'Useless' theme for me - and
adds humour and what a lovely frame! Perfect Anne - you are right on the
nose with this, well done!

Also, Marnie's poignant photo of her mother, in 'Untitled'. In another
guise, this pic would be technically passe, with direct flash straight
onto the face. In this instance it seems appropriate, and even
preferable. It concentrates the gaze right where it needs to be, and then
concentrates the mind on the harsh reality that can grip us all. I find
this picture both disturbing and refreshing in equal measures. I find it
thoughtful and yet frivolous - evoking a set of emotions that sit
uneasily. That it is included in the 'Useless' gallery is both a tribute
and a wake-up call. I think this pic is amongst the finest documentary
photography that it is possible to make, and for the photographer,
probably the hardest. I take my hat off to you Marnie - it's not a fine
family snap that your mother would have been proud of in her better days
but it is an excellent photograph in its own right, and if you are brave
enough, one that you can rightly be proud of. Well done kid.

Cheers,
  Cotty

Re: PUG open

2005-11-01 Thread Lucas Rijnders

Hi all,

Time to bite the bullet, and write some comments. I decided to comment on
every photo, which turned out not to be the wisest course of action. At
some point, 'nice' somehow starts to sound derisive, and repetition sets
in. I'd like to point out that is not intended. So:

--
Janne: Very nice shot.

Trevor: Cool: It looks like they went out with a bang :o)

John: Great find, and well captured. The pun is unintended, I hope?

Boris: I like the clashing colors and the composition. If they were put
there intentionally, it would have been art...

Rob: Cool thing. As you say, the size is hard to gauge, even if pointed
out. I 'know' the size, but I don't 'see' it, if you know what I mean.

Ann: I don't play scabble, and this is one of the reasons why ;-) Fits the
theme nicely...

Matjaž: That's insane! Thanks for showing.

Joseph: I like the depth in the image, and your explanation (though I
suspect that was not
why you took the pic ;-) Somehow, the castle still rules over it's
surroundings...

Harald: I like the shape of the barn, and I really love how the colors of
this picture
pull the background and foreground together, while the trees still
seperate them. It gives

a 'unified' look without loosing depth.

Tom: Wonderfull shot, great colors. I somehow miss the uselessness on this
one.

Marnie: I 'like' her gaze. It would have told the story without your
explanation. That's quite a feat to accomplish. It's a pity about the
popup flash though :/

Tony: grin I think _he_ finds the remote quite usefull ;-)

Dan: Initially the bow of the ship disturbed me, but without it it would
be too much of a
postcard. And the fountain repeating the flag is nice (or am I seeing
things?). I'm

undecided...

Martin: Nice picture. I don't agree with the 'momentarily useless',
though. It's great fun
to be on a ship that falls dry (-that was a literal translation from
Dutch, I hope you

get my meaning)

Bruce: Nice picture. My only criticism would be that you can't see that
it's rebuilt and

not working in the photo...

Kenneth: I really like this one. It makes me think of René Magritte's
citizens, which

can't be a bad thing.

Scott: Hmmm, is small change useless? Money in general? Or even 'liberty'?
And who on
earth has the audacity to put '1984' and 'liberty' on the same coin? If
all of the above is
intentional _really_ like the shot. I only wonder if I would have looked
so hard if I were

not commenting...

Dag: Wow, that's minimalism with a capital M. I learned that one should
leave out
unneccessery elements, but you take that to the extreme. And it still
tells several

stories... Wow again!

Tim: Nice shot.

Gianfranco: That is brutal. Well composed, and more shocking than a
picture of a real

killed animal. The power of the imagination...

Pancho: glup Tough to camment after that last remark... I'm a bit
undecided on this one: it's neither pleasing nor shocking. It might have
been better if the wasp was clearer, but I can imagine that a closup would
have been hard to get... As you write, if anything it raises some good
questions ;)

Raimo: You certainly nicely captured the velvet. I'm not sure about it's
uselessness: it isn't in a museum for nothing?

Markus: Great composition and colors; a lovely picture, and a story to
match!

Robert: Nice. To answer the question: I think so :o)

Jens: very big grin I've got some like that! I can definitely indentify
with the sentiment...

Collin: I like it a lot, you capture the atmosphere of the place very well.

Lucas: Oh no, I talk to myself too much as it is...

Rick: Nice shot.

John: Cool!

E.R.N. Reed: grin

Luben: I've seen this one before, I think. I liked it then, and I still
like it now. Very

threathening atmosphere. You can almost hear the wind building up.

Steve: _Very_ well done (and running trains are not that easy, I tried...)!

Paolo: Looks very nice. I'd like to see a bigger version of this one (or
did I miss a

PESO?). I don't think a picture this small does it justice.

For what it's worth,

Re: PUG open

2005-11-01 Thread Eactivist
Thanks to Cotty, Ann, Boris and frank for your comments.

Yeah, I am back onlist (sort of).

keith, my email address is the same as the one here.

Still pretty busy but closer to being really back. I don't like being onlist
without looking at other people's photos and making comments now and then.
But, as you know, that takes a A LOT of time.

But I am closer to feeling like I made some progress on my project that took
me off list. Although I will probably still be fairly quiet for another week
or so. I won't be finished then, but if I am far enough along with my project,
I won't feel too distracted by the list (reading and writing to the list was
becoming a great way to procrastinate).

So I'd really like to make comments on this month's PUG, other people's pics,
give my own feedback... but just don't have the time right now. Maybe in a
week or two, belated, but better than nothing I guess.

Did have to acknowledge what people said though (Cotty sent me his off-list
which reminded me the PUG opened).

Thanks! And thanks again. I almost didn't submit it, but glad I did. Well,
because, it's not a flattering photo of Mom. She's very vulnerable and all that
-- sort of exposed. But I figured maybe someone would get something out of it.
She went through several weeks of feeling useless recently, it happens
periodically, but she does sing and feel happy now and then too. Just to
balance out
the picture. :-)

So, glad you did get something out of it, because, well, because it felt sort
of risky to show it.

Note: The Optio has a very small viewfinder and a small LCD and would not be
my first choice for doing a portrait, but it let me enter the PUG again. I
shot about 20-25 and that one captured best what I was going for. When I saw
November's theme it just sort of shouted at me.

The photo was actually manipulated to make her face whiter and the background
darker, to increase the bad flash effect (which was there already somewhat).
I felt it gave it more punch. More reality or something somehow.

Evidentially, I was right. :-) Thanks so much for the comments. They mean a
lot.

Later, Marnie aka Doe

Oh, and Boris, your comment too, didn't mean to leave you out. :-)
