Or, you bought the size tripod that fits in your bag, or that you can
carry with you.

I'd never do that as the tripods end purpose has nothing to do with fitting
a bag - IMO.

A while back I found myself with more than one tripod and bit the bullet,
got rid of them all and bought a Gitzo that was not only rated to carry my
600mm, but also weighted less than any of the tripods I got rid of. OBTW its
tall enough for me - I'm 6'4 - that when fully extended I don't have to
stoop it has no center column.

I admit it was an expensive tripod, being Carbon fibre but its been well
worth the cost.

YMMV

I only had one until a few days ago, but carrying it on even short
bushwalks was a pain in the arse (well, back, actually). So I bought
the Manfrotto. It fits on my backpack, is strong enough to support
any camera/lenses I'm ever likely to use and it will be available when
I need a tripod even if I do have to extend the centre column. I'll
still use my main tripod when lugging it over long distances isn't an
issue.

Don't know, but by some strange coincidence I just bought a Manfrotto
390 series (the one with the pan/tilt head) as my travel tripod. It
was (is) on special at 79 bucks at Ted's in Sydney.

I doubt that I'll be mounting my ME on it though.

Interesting that in the video they show the least stable use of the tripod -
with the center column extended.

That's really the only way the 390 series can be used comfortably,
unless the user is quite short. With the centre column down, the max
height is just over 4 feet. It was the one thing that made me
hesitate about buying it, but it will do for occasional use while
bushwalking or travelling.

People seem to be forever comparing the stability of a tripod without
the center column extended to that of a tripod with the center column
extended. Most of the time the correct comparison to make is between
the stability of *no tripod at all* and that of a tripod with the
center column extended. Yes, keeping the center column retracted is a
better option, but if it's not possible or practical it shouldn't be
dismissed so lightly.
