They have a pretty nice "sound".
Crossroads is a very hard song to play. The guitar players timing is not
perfect, so it does not really float :-(

RE: GESO: Blues

2006-05-13 Thread Jens Bladt
Hmmm..
I think it floats just fine. This is not Eric Clapton and Cream, playing in
arecord studio.
It's really folk music - hobo music, isn't it? Originally played by people
with no education, walking from street to street, playing for the poor
people, day-labourers, whores, guests in cheap crummy restaurants etc. That
is at least the impression I get from the lyrics in the songs. To me this
sound just about right ;-)

I liked their sound, and the other song did float very well. But the Robert
Johnson classic Crossroads has some very intricate tempo shifts and are
considered a very hard song to play because of this.

But don't worry, enjoy them they are pretty good, I was just making
conversation ;-)

The original was done by Robert Johnson and was much closer to that version
then Cream's version was. Cream's version is in my opinion is a prime
example of English blues rock of the 60's and is in my personal top ten
songs of all time. Clapton has since proved he is as adept at playing
traditional Chicago blues and is no slouch at acoustic blues either.

That's true, Butch.
In the late sixties the guitar palyer in "my" band visited London. He was
the first Danish guy to buy a WOW-WOW pedal there.
We formed a band playing all the great Cream songs: Sunshine of Your Love,
Strange Brew and of course Crossroads. We named the band - very orininally -
Crowd. We had lots of gigs for a year or two. I was the drummer and my kid
brother Ole (16 years at the time) was the singer and bass player.
Here's Crossroads in our cover-version:

By the way: Cream's version wasn't done in a recording studio, it was
a live recording from a concert.

Your band sure sound like a hefty act Jens. And you where able to keep a
steady beat. I don't really remember the Cream version, but as I recall, you
sound a bit looser, a bit jazzier. The singers nasal sound is very similar
to Clapton ;-)

Never the less. This and Cream is or R&B, rhythm and blues. Clapton has
rerecorded the song, acoustic, him and Peter Green. That's much closer to
the original Johnson recording (I've got that on CD). Less bells and
whistles, and a lot harder to play.

I've also found a version by Tom Waits, very different, but pretty hefty
too.

I'm also trying to download the Cream version. So far, in vain :-(

Re: GESO: Blues

2006-05-15 Thread Adam Maas
The Cream version is pretty good. Clapton's done Crossroads three
different times, with Cream, Derek & The Dominoes and solo, although
there are about a half-dozen different performances of Clapton doing it
floating around.

If you like Robert Johnson, Clapton did a pair of tribute albums a
couple of years ago that are extremely good. I've got the second
(Sessions for Robert J.) and really need to pick up the first. The one I
have comes with a DVD of the studio session at Clapton's home, which is
quite entertaining.

-Adam
Who will note that even Lynyrd Skynyrd has done Crossroads.

Thanks everyone. What you see isn't ice. The water has a thin film of

The sheer volume of the photos along with Flickr's horrible
navigation/interface makes commenting on individual photos rather
ponderous, but there are some really good shots in there. Looks like
a fun pastime (and a great way to meet chicks!).

I've learned a lot about event photography going through this set of
pictures. One big thing is to go through and do the good shots
first. I should probably trim those 100 shots down to about 12.

There is also a lot for me to learn about using a flash. It's not
usually light enough for me to use a flash, so I don't have much
practice. Yes, I said light enough, if you use a flash when it's too
dark, people doing slow sexy dances get a bit cranky.

I meet a lot more women dancing than I do at Linux User Group meetings
or racing with the SCCA. There's one lass that I really want to do a
photo session with sometime. Johanna looks like a Valkyrie. She is a
bit over six feet tall and competes in crew on her college team. I
knew that she was heading off in the next week or so to spend the
summer training, I just found out last week that it's for the Olympic
team.

This may be my favorite shot of the weekend:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/3548452509/sizes/l/in/set-72157618521434968/

It was shot at about 5 AM on Monday morning. Ruby (the redhead) was
one of the event organizers. I don't know where her energy came from.

Maybe, next week I can start on the non-dance photos.
It was an insane amount of work sorting and processing general event
shots. People are more interested in shots of themselves than in great
photographs, so rather than throwing away everything that isn't a
really good photo, I had to put a little bit of work into each shot
that was "good enough".

I am so glad that I don't make my living doing this. I can just
imagine how much worse it would be to do this at weddings.

Thanks, I had to go back a few months to find the link to
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/3548452509/sizes/l/in/set-72157618521434968/

Most blues dancing is to slower music, but not all blues is slow,
especially "rocking blues", which is halfway between rock and
blues. Even the slower music can lend itself to lifts and aerials.
