Congrats Peter! FA* 85/1.4 is a really great portrait (and not only)
lens. It provides outstandind sharpness and contrast, very good even
at f1.4 (if you're lucky to hit right focus at this shallow DOF ;-)
and in two different tests proved to be exceptional - about as sharp
as the sharpest among Pentax lenses - FA 50/2.8 macro:
http://www.pictchallenge-archives.net/TESTNUM/BxuREV7.html
BTW - no one so far has proved superiority of A* over FA* version ;-)

Peter, congrats on getting the 85 F1.4. You will enjoy it a lot..I
have had mine a long time. I also have an 85 F1.8 and and an 85 F2.0
lens but the 1.4 is the one I always turn to, the 135 F.1.8 is also
another fine lens which I also use a lot..Good luck with

I don't think it was me Peter. I had a mint in box version I bought for
about 650GBP in about 2000, and I remember selling for 750 GBP 18 months
later or so. I'm sure it went to Japan, but I could be wrong.

In order to balance the lens properly, I had to put it on the longest plate
that Wimberley sells. I put some foam padding at the front of it to support
the lens a bit better.
I have some pictures of it around here someplace, if you want, I can have a
dig around and post them again.

Great shot, Bill. The composition works nicely for me in several
ways - I wish I'd taken it! I have a Gitzo 1410 tripod with a
Manfrotto 3421 gimbal head which is sturdy enough to support my
A*400/2.8 so it should do OK with the A*600/5.6, which only weighs
about half as much. Of course the A*600 is longer, and you advise
that the tripod mount isn't optimally located, so I'll have to check
it out.

Glad to hear that there is another PDMLer from the area in addition
to Paul Stenquist and Ken Waller.

Well, I have my fingers crossed that it's as good as it looks in
those photos. I've done business with Matsuiyastore before and they

Jim,

I think that you will like the lens a lot, I've had mine for three years or
so. The lighter weight than the f4 version is a plus to me, as I
occasionally hike a ways with it in a backpack to get where I want to use
it. I carry it in a large photo backpack. The poor positioning of the
tripod mount is a problem, but not seriously so. I find it quite sharp,
though it's not a good lens for moving subjects, due largely to the mount
position, at least I don't think so. Mr. Robb has some experience with it's
use on a gimbaled head. Here's a shot taken at Kensington Metropark (I'm in
Livonia, BTW) with this lens, the 1.4x teleconverter with an ist D.

After several years of searching I finally found and won an eBay auction
(150111393342) for a Pentax A*600/5.6 lens in pristine condition. I wanted
it for my lens collection which now includes all of the A-series glass
except the A*1200/8, which I've never seen for sale. It should be great for
long shots over Lake Erie from the front porch of our summer cottage. It
will be interesting to see how the SR of the K10D works with it - at a
little over 3 Kg it might be marginally hand-holdable. I suspect that it
will spend more time on my HD tripod, however.

This one was really hard to find - the only other time I saw one up for
auction on eBay, I accidentally slept through the close of the auction and
never got my bid in! This one cost a bit more than the earlier one but
seems to be in better condition (fingers crossed).

There is also an FA*600/4 up on eBay currently. but the price just makes my
head spin!

That's good advice, Maris, and I have indeed begun using a sniping
service when I can't be online at the close of an eBay auction. I
always place one "maximum" bid during the last 10 seconds of an
auction, whether using sniping SW or placing the bid manually. It
keeps me from getting hypercompetitive and chasing other bidders!

At least to me it is major!
I've bee reading about all over for this "great" lens. After losing out
on one in an eBay auction a few months back by being too cheap to bid a
decent price for it, I was really wanting very badly to add this one to
my collection. Finally, I decided that I would pull the trigger on an "as
brand new" condition one that I had known of a source for some time, but
didn't want to pay the big dollars. I ended up paying probably too much
for it, but considering what some of the prices have been lately for fine
Pentax glass, I figured that for an excellent copy of this lens it would
be money well spent. Now I see for myself what the hype is all about. The
only complaint I have with it is the lack of a tripod collar. Here if one
of my first images with the lens taken with my *istDS:

Congrats Jay! It is really beautiful lens, small and light for its focal
length and max aperture. Have a lot of fun with it!

RE: Major Enablement

2005-09-17 Thread Don Sanderson
Hi Jay, that's a very nice shot, and dog.
I have the F80-200/4.7-5.6, it's one of my favorite
walk-around lenses.
Very light, and the internal zoom is a feature I wish
ALL of my lenses had.
The best way to find an F1.7x is to check eekBay and
KEH at least several time a day.
They show up fairly regularly but go VERY fast!
Setup a search for "Pentax 1.7x" on eekBay and have
them send you an e-mail whenever new items show up.
Still a good idea to check manually, and frequently,
too.

What's that, about US$800?
Wow, the A200 Macro is impossible to fine at $1,200.

How true! Each time I've purchased expensive Pentax glass
(FA*80-200/2.8, FA*28-70/2.8, 31 Ltd) I've stressed out over "can I
really afford this now?" and "is it really worth this much money?" but
each time I've so much more impressed with the lens than I expected to
be that the "buyer's remorse" passed very quickly. :)
