Thunderbird updates have been fairly well behaved for me. I do
plain-text email only and none of the updates have ever tried to
change my settings.

I've had compatibility issues a few times with Firefox updates, but
never with Thunderbird.

There used to be a XP compatibility mode that was meant for just that

I had a laptop that originally came with "Vista" and I hated the

...) so I just copied the XP versions and added them to the
Windows/System folder.

They worked fine. And they still work fine on 64-bit Windows 7.

They worked so well that just now is the first time I ever looked to
see if Windows 7 included games of its own.

If Micro$oft doesn't have a clue, I bet there's other fans of that

Windows 7.

You may consider giving a try first to Wine (and Wine-tricks)
before/instead of VM solution.
Or, try both before deciding. You can then compare their performance

That's why I have my own router/firewall that plugs into the modem. The router

The known work-around is to set it up with a static IP address.  Do that and

2017-10-05 Thread ann sanfedele
I don't want Wi_FI.    I have a flip phone that is used only for talk
and very occasional text between phones -- no
web access at all. ... I feel cable only connection to the web is safer
- I only go on line from my lovely big Hp desktop.

ands my TV is only a TV -it isn't "smart".

simplify, simplify, simplify :-)

doesn't require flash, so you should be good to go.
(Their legacy speedtest page does require flash, so don't bother with that.)

I have windoze 7 pro - where is it safe to gather and install it to use on
either or both Firefox and chrome?

FWIW Chrome has flash built in, and when chrome auto-updates it also
updates its version of flash. Personally I'm reluctant to install
flash other than as part of chrome for that reason.

Flash is dead. It's in legacy mode and will disappear completely soon
enough. It generally doesn't run at all on mobile devices, and web
browsers have it disabled by default, a pretty strong hint to avoid
using it.

Cue the MP parrot thread ...

It might be a setting in chrome. Flash can be blocked by default,
allowed by default, blocked or allowed per website etc.

clicking this link (when using the chrome web browser) should take you
to chrome's setting for flash.

chrome://settings/content/flash

But pj's link might also solve it for you.

Re: Windows 10 Anniversary and DNG files

2016-09-25 Thread P.J. Alling
I've been viewing DNG thumbnails using Windows 7 and Windows XP for
years. They have also visible in Windows Photo view in Explorer. They
were also visible in Windows 2000, (not talking about WinME), but that
required downloading a third party codec. The fact that it took this
long to support a common format, that was previously supported, is a
great argument to not be an early adopter.

On 9/25/2016 4:06 AM, Henk Terhell wrote:
After this week's anniversary update of my Windows 10 installation I
now discover that DNG files are thumbnailed in the Windows Explorer
and can also be viewed by Windows Photo Gallery.

This is much easier than having first to open Lightroom or FS viewer.
Is this what they call groundbreaking technical progress or did I miss
something?

Speaking of Horseshit, I have another nomination.
I'm staying in a Hilton hotel tonight.
As an HH Honors member they seemed to offer free internet.
(Most every motel on the interstate highway offers free internet.)
On closer inspection, not really free at Hilton.
No problem says I, the alternative is free to ATT customers.
So I try that option, not quite.
We need your ATT address and password.
That I don't really remember, but with a cell phone call they help me
with my address.
Can't do anything about the password though.
Have to call this other number for that.
So I call.
While a black man with poor English was helpful on the first call,
the oriental woman on the second call was unbelievable!
First, she has an unintelliginle accent - very poor Engllish language
pronounciation.
Second, she's talking so fast, I can't make out what she is saying.
(And I've got a pretty good ear for it after my share of 3 hour conf
calls to China.)
Third, everything she says is clipped. It is being dropped by the
cellphone connection.
And fourth and most infuriating, she isn't listening!
I say something and she launches into a 25 second sing-song monologue.
I talk over her, but she just continues to speak..
I tell her to listen, but she doesn't.
I tell her she is not conversing with me.
I tell her I can't understand what she is saying.
I tell her she has poor language skills.
She continues to ask me about irrelevant questions.
I finally give up and just start guessing at my password.
I make a good guess and get signed on, after 30 minutes of horseshit.

Now how do I get ATT to hear this?

Snail mail, registered, return receipt requested to the head of operations.

To which the response from ATT is You can't notify us by mail, you
have to call us on the telephone.

[BTW, the phone number you have to call for that is a *SECRET*.]

I don't actually do any business with ATT any more, but I end up having
to do battle with them every couple of years. It's a recurring nightmare
from the days when I did have a telephone.

About the only thing I've found that halfway works is to keep asking
May I speak to YOUR supervisor? until I get someone who speaks English
I can understand.

Unfortunately, I'm serious about it only working HALFWAY.

laptops, and they have been different, but still intuitive. I can see why
people like the things. What I didn't see was a huge advantage over what I'm

What I don't understand is why changing the OS means changing the user
interface.
In the case of Win 8, the opening screen is the start screen, much like
on a tablet. If you hit the start button on a regular MS OS, and it gave
you a screen instead of a pop up, the start screen is what it would give
you.
One of the Apps is the desktop. I suspect that app doesn't come on
tablets. One can remove all the apps from the start screen except the
ones that are used, any programs you install will show up as an icon on
the start screen.
It's easy enough, but for me, they could have left that screen off on
the computer versions of the OS.

The UI/windows manager/shell is just another program on top of the OS.

Microsoft is trying to make a UI that will work on both tablets and desktops.
What it will get is something that doesn't work well on either.
My guess is it will work very well on tablets. It wasn't that much off
my Android for usability, and for people who carry a tablet and have a
laptop at home, I expect the familiarity that Win8 brings from the
tablet to the PC will make it easier for tablet users.
My wife and I both prefer working from the desktop though, and with that
in mind Classic Shell does the trick.

Re: Windows 8 is Horseshit.

2013-02-22 Thread Bob Sullivan
ATT blows dead bears.
Now how do I get ATT to hear this?
Regards, Bob S.

Bill,

It really isn't as bad as all that. Especially on a laptop. Slide your
finger onto the touchpad from the right to pull up charms, do the same from
the left side to go to the last app, and down from the top to bring up the
menu for the program. Far easier than the hot corners. Windows key and D
gets the desktop, Windows key and X brings up a useful menu. It is just a
matter of it being different. I have to sell the stuff, so I am becoming
used to it and it really isn't that bad.

What I don't understand is why changing the OS means changing the user

The UI/windows manager/shell is just another program on top of the OS.

Microsoft is trying to make a UI that will work on both tablets and desktops.
What it will get is something that doesn't work well on either.

RE: Windows 8 Makes Me Consider a Mac

2012-11-29 Thread Bob W
From: PDML [mailto:pdml-boun...@pdml.net] On Behalf Of Larry Colen

One of my big peeves is making the user interface an intrinsic part of
the operating system. There's no need for it. You should be able to
run a UI on whatever OS you want, whether it's Windows 7, 8 or XP, or
for that matter Linux or OSX.

You're talking about 2 different things there.

One is whether or not the UI is an instrinsic part of the OS, and in each of
the example OSes it is not - they are all fat kernel OSs, and don't actually
need the standard UI in order to operate the computer. Server versions of
operating systems run without a UI in unattended data centres and expect you
to remote in if you want to control them

Two is whether or not a UI can run on different OSes. In principle, any UI
that's built on X can do that, and any UI that takes a similar approach of
having an abstraction layer (like X) between the OS and the UI can do the
same thing, but people have to provide the abstraction layers. In the case
of Windows I don't think there are any, so you can't just take the Windows
UI and stick it on top of Plan 9, for example, but I bet it could be done.

Windows, at least the pro versions, comes with a POSIX subsystem so you can
run native UNIX on a Windows kernel, without the Windows susbsystem (this is
probably not very clear, but it's only an email). This means that you can
run X, which in turn means you can run any of the UIs that run on X.

My experience with XP is that even if you right click tell it to keep
the item on the menu permanently, eventually it will still wander off
somewhere. You'll have to hunt it down and pin it there again. You
just don't have to do it as frequently.

that's never happened to me. You must have pixies in your house who do it
while you're asleep.

Yeah, but you'd think they'd at least have the common curtsey to have
my coffee ready when I wake up in the mornings.

I think it may be some function of how frequently you use the start menu
for launching programs. I seldom do. The programs I use are almost all
either on the Quick Launch or are represented as desktop short-cuts I
can double click.

There are some programs I might use once or twice a year pinned to the
Start Menu itself, and those are the ones that seem prone to eventually
wander off.

Trust me - in Old Farte Mode, you are NOT going to be able to thumb-type whilst
holding on to almost any size or make of communication device.

At some point, the inaccuracies that Old Fartes put to screen with a full size,
non-chicklet keyboard are very time consuming to go back over and correct.

Unless you are Brooke.

Maybe youth and David have something there - it's not the form nor format as
long as the general idea is communicated.

Now if you wanted to print with a 9 pin or line printer this month, you
may have to do some searching, or coding, to make it happen.

Not so. Not that it matters much to most people, but USB to 9-pin
serial and USB to Centronics (parallel printer) interface dongles are
widely available cheap -- I have one of each at least. If you plug
that into your Mac and hook it up to your ancient printer, the
built-in Ghostscript drivers in Mac OS X will get you printing in
moments.

At 64, I guess I've reached olde fartedom. But I need a smartphone for my
business, and bought my first, a Droid 2, a couple of years ago. I opted for
the android phone in part because, at the time, Verizon didn't support iPhones,
and because the Droid 2 had a slide out mini keyboard. At the store I had tried
typing on the screen of another android phone without keyboard and found it
nearly impossible. At first I used the slide out keyboard on the D2, but it was
cumbersome and slow. I eventually learned to manage fairly well typing on the
screen but frequently had to backtrack to correct mistakes. A few weeks ago I
became eligible for a phone upgrade, so I stopped in at the Verizon store and
tried several phones. I found that the iPhone 5 was much easier to type on than
any of the android phones. Don't know why, but it's easier to hit the right
letter on the touch screen. Now, I can buzz along rather well, with a hunt and
peck method and have found that I can even manage the two thumb technique. I
will probably continue to practice that. Sending e-mail from the phone is
important to my journalism work, so it's worth the effort. Old fartedom has at
least been delayed.
