If you mean the M40/2.8, I would agree with you. I didn't see what so
special about that lens other than it's compact size (a minus to me actually
because it was too small to operate comfortably). I think some people just
tried to make something out of nothing.

I'd say the time for the FA43/1.9 hasn't come yet. The M40/2.8 was once like
the dirt cheap 50mm and they were everywhere. It wasn't something special or
expensive, and many showed up in 2ndhand shops at dirt cheap prices. 15+
years on, somehow the pancake fever took off and many people wanted one and
paid ridiculous price for it. Consider the FA43/1.9 was truly the most
compact and well made AF lens ever, I'd say it will become a highly
desirable item in the future too. Perhaps another 15+ years?

Re: pancake question

2002-03-22 Thread frank theriault

Hi, Len,

Interesting.

When I borrowed Wendy's MX, I didn't expect to find the 40mm pancake on it.
Having read opinions on this list similar to yours, Len, I really didn't expect
much from it in terms of sharpness.

Maybe it was my low expectation that caused me to be pleasantly surprised when I
got back my first roll, and found the prints to be quite sharp.

But maybe I have low standards... ;-)

In any event, I still want one. Not as a collectable, obviously, but as a
user. And, I have to admit, part of the allure for me is its size. I think it
would be wasted on any camera but the MX or one of the other M series bodies
(size-wise), as they're so physically compatible.

Thanks to all who replied regarding whether the price of the one that I'm
looking at is reasonable - as I suspected, it seems to be.

regards,
frank

2002-03-22 Thread Paris, Leonard

Do you think they are really buying the pancake because it is a collectable?
It isn't, to my knowledge, a rarity. I think they were produced in pretty
great quantity. I think the lens has gained an undeserved reputation of
being an extremely sharp lens, because of all of the BS written about it in
ebay item descriptions. The sheer numbers of them that pass through ebay
should make folks wonder exactly how good they could actually be. If it was
a really great lens, and a collectable, there wouldn't be so many of them
available.

That's because the 43 Limited is available brand new and hence is not
"collectable". Those who want to pay high prices for their lenses just order
their 43 Limited from their nearest camera shop.

Indeed- but you forgot to point out that it has autofocus evil. (jk)

But the FA 43 f/1.9 just doesn't seem to inspire the fervor,
neither here nor on ebay, that the original pancake does, so
maybe the 3mm longer and the f/1.9 aperture just doesn't equate
to a genuine pancake lens. Perhaps folks want their lenses
small and soft, relatively speaking, because the pancake is not
anywhere close to as good as the FA 43 f/1.9 in performance.

I will sell mine for $125 + actual priority mail cost. So that seems like a
good price from a store.
