I moved a lot growing up and was exposed to a number of schools. Some
gave numeric grades and others gave Grade letters. In either case,
failing was failing. If you are trying to jump over a puddle of water,
does it make a huge difference if you make it 50% or 20% of the way. In
either case you're all wet. And so is the discussion.

The real problem isn't that they aren't giving failing grades anymore, the

Based on my ten years of experience teaching in inner city Chicago
high schools, I'd say it's a realistic policy. Percentages alone mean
nothing. The curriculum should be based on real needs, and the
success ratio has to come close to resembling a bell curve. The
alternative is little or no success for any student. It's a fact of
life. Doesn't make me puke.

Re: way OT - school system shenanigans in Pittsburgh

2008-09-24 Thread Joseph McAllister
The way I read it, the article makes it clear that 50% is still
failing. For that matter, up to 59% is still failing. And straight
60-69% won't get you anywhere. The only difference I can see is that
if you are absolutely without any merit in a particular subject (P.E.,
Math, Science) for whatever reason, you will not have a 15% grade
averaged against your B's and C's towards making graduation. Many
great authors probably could not climb a rope. Many Olympic athletes
and/or football players cannot parse a sentence. But they can get
through life and be productive none the less.

Anybody on this list ever get an F in anything? How about an
Incomplete? An F was the same as a 50-59%. An Incomplete was the same
as a 0%, and as far as I know, was never averaged in to a final grade
unless it trumped all grades by being a requirement to graduate. By
the way, to average letter grades, they were converted to percent
before averaging. B+ = 89%, B- = 80%, B = 85%, A- = 90% etc. Add in
the teacher likes me or hates me or doesn't know I exist increment
to account for the fudge factor that just might make a difference.

I speak on behalf of all those who, like me, had to go to summer
school following the rest of the class graduating high school to get
better than a 'D' in Spanish. Señora Oñate said it was because she
enjoyed my sense of humor so much, she wanted to spend at least a
little more time with me. I think it was because I used my sense of
humor to make fun of her from time to time in class. :-) My spanish
still sucks.

Sounds like typical product of left wing nut jobs trying to make the
children feel inclusive. Wait till they fail later in life,

Not where I came from. An F counted as 0 on your GPA and /was/ included

From my own experience, an incomplete usually had a deadline by which
the work needed to be done. If you didn't meet the deadline, it
reverted to an F (and therefore a zero) and was included in your GPA.

unless it trumped all grades by being a requirement to graduate.

Not where I came from. An F counted as 0 on your GPA and /was/ included
if you didn't drop the class, whether a required class or not. An
Incomplete was not counted in your GPA but prevented graduation if
required. Never ran into someone with a non-dropped Incomplete that
wasn't required, so I don't know what happened in that case.

 LOL.

No Frank, when they fail, we need to induct them into the marines, so

overcrowded prisons and not have to worry about them anymore.

Hope they commit a crime? If they've gone to school in Pittsburgh
it's virtually assured - those are schools for crime with their
 commie no fail grading!

I really hope i'm fully retired before they hit the aledge work force.
I feel at $6.00 and hour they will not place much money into the Cpp
funds. I'll have mine by then i hope.:-)

Thats why i almost repeated grade 5 but did with grade 7.

I smartened up, so to speak:-) in grade 10.

 Sure.

 Blame the left.

I say when those punks do fail later in life, make sure there's a
terrific welfare system in place to pay them a gazillion dollars a
year to sit on their asses and drink beer and watch Oprah and Doctor
Phil all day. When those two shows (which run back-to-back) are over,
they can then - at the taxpayer's expense, mind you - go out and sell
drugs to little kids to make certain that the cycle is perpetuated.

Then they can get into their Cadillac Escalades and go out to night
clubs and drink some more, maybe do some drugs, go home and sleep in
 until the afternoon.

Then you can blame the left some more. 'Cause that's all the left is
 good for is blaming.

My experience is there is two different 'Left's'. One is the honestly
Socialist/Marxist types who have very solid grounded reasons for their
belief. The other are folk marxists operating as 'Liberals' and
'Progressives' who seem to prefer a neo-aristocratic system of feel
good measures, where everything must be right if the right people with
the right attitudes are pushing the right programs, irrespective of
whether there's any basis in reality for any of those three
suppositions. I respect the former very much. The latter are a big
problem as reality doesn't affect them much.

So, do we vote for the latter, or the neo conservative that is somewhat to
the left of Stalin?
Meanwhile Jacko the whacko is going to live in the BC interior squishing

I love this time of year.
