David, I actually did what you did, not too long ago... Then I just gave up. It's just not so practical... I used to have Pentax LX*2 ME Super, Program Plus, Auto 110, Canon Canonet, Konica S2, Yashica Electro35GT, Yashica Flasher, Contax T3. Some of them are classics and all of them in excellent working order. But I then sold most of them. Because I just don't use them all and I feel sorry for them just sitting there... because I really just like using LX and DS I actually prefer collecting Pentax lenses... I can use them in rotation. Camera-collecting has been a hobby for me lo, these many years. The whole collection can be seen at http://www2.acorn.net/~aa197/camcoll.htm if interested. A Pentax Spotmatic is one of the users, and I have an aftermarket screwmount bellows which is a lot of fun for macro stuff. My favorite is a Miniature Speed Graphic (one of 3 SGs) which uses 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 cut film (still available!). Then I weakened and bought an Auto 110, and then an Auto 110 Super kit. I think I have almost got over it though - I passed up the 70mm and the zoom for good prices. I slipped a bit recently with MX stuff (who on earth really needs a 250 shot back???), but then decided I needed car and house insurance more than I needed a motordrive MX, so I think I'm recovering. The weidest ones though are the 500f5 and Spotmeter K. I've bought better replacements (SMC 500f4.5 and digital Spotmeter) but am holding onto the originals because "I might decide to start collecting", in which case I would have trouble getting them again. That's how the Apple collecting started - I had a Lisa and an original 128k Mac and realised that this was an excellent foundation for a collection of macintoshes (which now takes up one wall of the garage.) All of the other Pentax stuff is meant to be used, even if it isn't very often. Same thing goes for the 6x9 rangefinder, and the 4x5 gear which is all at least 40 years old. I collect cameras in a squirrelly sort of fashion. I kept buying MXs because I liked them, then I realised I couldn't possibly use them all so now I only have 3. When I got the black MX then I just had to have the black ME Super. And of course what goes with a black MX and an LX? Yep, a black KX. I am a random impulse buyer. My only real collection is of Kershaw folders, which of course includes the obligatory 110, penguin and king penguin. Still looking for a Raven - so if anyone knows of one for sale. Hi I don't really collect cameras - I try to sell those that I don't use (for economic reasons) - but I still have 10 SLR's (35mm, 6x6, 6x7) (6 Pentax) and some 35mm and 6x9 rangefinders. I sertainly don't want cameras that don't work. I once got a Kodak baby brownie in original box w. a flash for 2$ at a flee market! I had a complete Topcon outfit for some time, but I let it go to help finance a trip to South Africa (No point in having many nice cameras, if you can't afford to travel/use them). Unfortunately I don't have a Spotmatic, but I guess a nice one will come my way some day. I think my nicest (beautiful manufacturing) cameras are the K1000 and my latest, the 67. I've considered myself a camera collector since I discovered a couple of old Argus C-3's in Binghamton, NY antique shops 15 years ago. I've bought and sold or traded many cameras since then, following my interests, what struck my fancy, and also what finds I "lucked" into. I'm definitely a user/collector, as a camera that no longer works and isn't worth fixing (or, for that matter, cameras that take obselete film formats) isn't attractive to me. I love handling and playing with many of these fine examples of aesthetics, precision machinery and glass, but actually carrying them around, ~using~ them, is the ultimate reason for having them. Six years ago, I first put up a Web page dedicated to my camera collecting "philosophy" at http://people.clarityconnect.com/webpages/wilensky/camera.htm and it's due for some updating, but still reflects my approach. I found Pentax cameras to be perhaps the ultimate collectible, largely because of the backwards compatibility and nearly straight lines of descendancy (in the hand, the compact, beautiful ME Super paired with an SMC-M 50/1.7 lens truly feels like a grandchild of a meterless H2 with one of the small Auto-Takumar lenses, for instance). But I also appreciate American cameras (the wonderfully Art Deco original Argus Model A, the curved ends of the Argus Markfinder, the Kodak Signet); my Leica IIIc/f feels, in operation, like nothing else I own; I've had several Kodak Retinas, currently holding onto a IIa; I have a Kodak Stereo 35 camera that takes modern slide film but essentially gives me a completely new format in three dimensions; and compact rangefinders from the '70s definitely deserve their own cult -- and have them! I started my collecting in late Sixties with the Leica IIIf. I've got a few Leicas, my favorite being the IIIg. I also have a Hassy 1600, the original Hasselblad that still functions. I still own a Pentax H3 that I received for a college graduation gift. I really love my ES and ESII cameras. I probably will unload most of my Leica stuff in the fall. Jim A. > From: "J. C. My "users": MX, MV, 3 Spotmatics, Yashica Mat, Yashica Electro 35, Minolta HiMatic F My "collectors": Yashica A, Minolta 16II, Voigtlander Vito Automatic I, Kodak Brownie Starflash My collectors aren't collectors because they're worth anything. Quite the contrary. The A was my father's, and needs a shutter repair, which will probably never get done; I'm keeping it for nostalgia's sake. The Minolta 16 was a $10 eBay purchase, but the film cassettes are next to impossible to get, or too expensive when you find them - so I just think it's a cool little trinket. The Voigtlander would probably work if I put film in it, but the light meter is pooched, so again, it's just a cool looking piece. The Brownie was my first camera, so again, nostalgia. Collectively, they're worth about zip, but they are on a shelf, and make good conversation pieces. regards, frank "J. C. Actually, 3. I forgot the Spotmatic II which was bought more for Pentax history than anything else. I also have an Auto110 and an IQ Zoom 120 but didn't include them.
