Yes, it was -- and so was its successor, the S4.
Same is true of the 550 (February) and the 555 (September?).

I attended a Kodak Digital seminar a year ago or so in which the presenters
stated that Kodak considered the half life of digital cameras to be 9
months.
I last November I purchased an Optio S and now I don't see it advertised in
places where I previously saw it. Is it out of production? Wasn't it just
introduced last year?

Digital equipment is ephemeral. The production life for the *ist-D
was expected to be 6 months. If a "NEW IMPROVED" model is to be announced
you want to be rid of your old stock. New tech doesn't improve with age
like some old tech does.

Veeery interesting. Perhaps the folks at Pentax have heard some PMA

Hello Tanya,

One thing to consider is that most announcements of new DSLR's at PMA
won't be for shipping product. So if you are in need of one in the
near future, you should just start looking at what can be purchased
now.

My plan is to keep the *istD for backup some point down the road when
better bodies are available.

Re: DSLR price wars?

2004-01-30 Thread Bruce Dayton
I disagree. I think they decided since they don't have a BabyD to
show at PMA, that they better do something to fill in the gaping hole
before all the water runs out. The *istD is in the same class as the
10D Canon and Nikon D100 not the 300D or D70.

Dropping their price seems a very odd move to me. If a BabyD is not
very far off, they will have to price it even lower to not cannibolize
their *istD sales. Nikon has a similar problem with the D70 being
spec'ed the way it is.

I think it's more likely that they are doing it because they *don't*
have any new DSLRs coming in the near future and now that the initial
excitement is waning they need to move closer to the new hot price point
($1000.00).

"($300)  PENTAX *ist D digital SLR body retail price reduction while
supplies last"

Interesting, this only usually happens when either sales are so slow that
they have to kick them back into action, or they are running down stock
to make way for new products.

Yeah, actually, on the other hand (in reference to my last comment), it

Now I am truly in a quandary!

Only about 10 days til PMA, so I guess there isn't long to wait...

If I was to try and guess, I would guess that they are trying to clear out of
the supply line the bodies that do not have the firmware upgrade from the
factory. However, it does leave one speculating about a new model in the works.
Maybe for PMA announcement.

This have happened to all DSLR's. Anyway, it could easily be replaced soon, and/or
getting competition from other pentax DSLR's. I think herbert Keppler recently
suggested as much. Also mentioned that both Pentax and Minolta worked on image
stabilization built into the sensor.
