Subject: GESO - Spitfire 70th Anniversary

At the beginning of September I went along to the Spitfire Anniversary
Air Show at Duxford. Not many Spitfires actually flew because of high
winds but there were plenty of other displays. I've put together a
small gallery. Comments welcome.

http://www.efeatherstone.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/2006-09-02/

Taken with an MX and (most I think) 300mm f/4 on Fuji Reala.

[Apologies if the gallery contains Javascript, not my preference, it
is what the Lightrooom beta seems to do.]

Cheers,
Eric.

Great stuff. That English countryside really suites the Spitfire,
doesn't it? :)

Pity you couldn't get any of Spitfires in flight. In the air, the
Spitfire is the most beautiful aircraft ever made, IMHO.

Neat planes. Funny, a Seafire, but no shots Spitfires (not even on the

I hate to say it but I can't see them. All I get is a gray window with
previous and next links that do nothing. I looked at the page code and
it seems to be Javascript generated by Lightroom. It's the same on the
machine running Win98se machine and the W2K machine running, both using
Firefox 1.0.4. Yes I know that Firefox 1.5 is out but I'm on dialup and
it just takes so freaking long to download. So I guess I'll just have
to go by other peoples descriptions and do a Ken Rockwell® style review.

No need to warn; the javascript file is misising (I investigated
after my browser logged errors). You might want to consider

Thanks for the heads up, I guess this is the purpose of beta software
;-) I've rootled around in the directory structure as created by
Lightroom's HTML export wossname and here's what seems to have
happened:

First of all there are _two_ copies of the index.html; ./index.html &
./content/index.html. Their contents are identical.
The javascript file in question is placed here ./resources/js/liveUpdate.js
The index.html files both contain a reference to ../resources/js/liveUpdate.js
Clearly this is only going to work in the 2nd copy of the index.html!

Anyway, I've hand edited the more usual index.html and re-uploaded it.
Hopefully that will cure the errors you were getting.

Cheers,
Eric.

Darn it! I only checked the site with Camino (well it was late.)

David mentioned some particular JavaScript errors which I think I've
fixed. This might cure the problems you got. If not I'll just have to
settle for a "Rockwell Review" ;-)
Mind you if it still don't work I've a good mind to re-write the html
myself without it being riddled by javascript - however it will be a
while before I can get around to that :-(

Cheers,
Eric.

Yes, I'd hoped to see more off them flying too. I got a couple of

Re: GESO - Spitfire 70th Anniversary

2006-10-03 Thread Adam Maas
Note the last VC of WW2 was won by a Corsair IV pilot in the Pacific,
Robert Gray, a Canadian from 1842 squadron. One of his squadron mates
would be the last Canadian casualty of WW2 later that same day. The
Corsair is probably the most famous Allied fighter from the Pacific
theater, and it would serve through the Korean War as a strike fighter,
and through the early 60's in French carrier service.

The Hellcat was the most successful allied fighter aircraft, with
approximately 6000 kills, mostly in the Pacific theatre, although it did
serve with distinction in the Atlantic theater and in Europe (FAA
Hellcats were involved in the strike against the Tirpitz for example).

That's pretty cool. Chuck Yeager shot one down in his P-51D Mustang.
Most 262s were vulnerable during landing and I -believe- that the only
ones shot down were in the process of landing. Kinda unsporting, but it
counts as a "kill" :-)

Wow. I just thought of some other WWII trivia that's been kicking
around my brain for who-knows-how-many years: Tomorrow, 4 October,
marks the. 62nd (had to stop and work it out) anniversary of
the first time a jet aircraft was shot down in combat. The jet was, of
course, a Messerschmitt 262 and the plane that (somehow) succeeded in
shooting it down was a Spitfire Mk XIV.

I just did a little digging and found, much to my surprise, that my
mnemory was correct (though some sources say it was 05 October). I
should point out that this was the first jet to be shot down by
another *fighter* plane. I assume this means some got caught in
crossfire while going through bomber formations earlier.

Most were killed during takeoff or landing, but they were also shot down
during missions (It was just much harder).

Heck, there was a case in the Korean War where 8 MiG-15's jumped 4 Sea
Furies, losing 1 MiG, 2 damaged MiG's, and a possible 2nd kill. The Sea
Furies were undamaged.

Actually, I believe the first losses were to V-1's. Meteors flew anti-V1
missions as early as June 1944 (It entered Squadron service before the
ME262, although the 262 saw combat first). Otherwise they were likely
from bombers in August of 44.

I remember reading about that at the time, and, IIRC, the victories were
ascribed to the superior manoeuvrability of the Sea Furies (which, of
course, were late versions of the Spitfire adapted for carrier work). This
was the same reason that the Gladiators which defended Malta against the
Forze Aerea were able to survive as long as they did.

The Hawker Sea Fury is utterly unrelated to the Spit. It's somwhat of a
development of the Tempest, but is likely related more closely to the
FW190 than anything else (The close-shrouded radial design was borrowed
from the Focke-Wulf, and that very nearly defined the airframe design,
only the wings came from the Tempest).

You're right of course Adam - brain fade on my part! I was thinking of the
