Don't you have "Budget" dishwashing liquid there?
Comes in a white bottle with blue writing and smells
of mint not lemon. Haven't tried using it as a
toothpaste yet, but I bet it gives you lovely fresh
breath and squeaky clean teeth :)

2001-04-02 Thread Conrad Samuels

You know, I also have these coated eyeglasses and in my opinion they're a
bally pest. The glass is fine but the coating seems to sooner or later get
dinged no matter how you try to prevent it, even not wearing them (which
defeats the purpose surely?).

I ruined a pair recently by trying to polish out dings in the coatings. OK
the results were bad but those coatings were damn hard I can assure you and
they simply refused to come off. (the reasoning was that if I could remove
the coatings then the dings would disappear- well being acrylic glasses the
dings didn't disappear).

Hmm... this post is queer. It looks as if it proves itself wrong..

Re: I really dont like Hoya HMC filters....... Now

2001-04-02 Thread aimcompute

I worked in a test equipment repair shop for several years. We used
dishwashing liquid as an antistatic cleaner for glass & plastic analog meter
face plates, to prevent static from affecting the meter needle. The secret
was to rinse it in warm water, cold water quickly removed all the soap,
while warm water let it spread around over the glass and left the tiniest
thin coating. Radio Shack sold a little 1-2 ounce bottle of antistatic
solution for several dollars that contained only dishwashing liquid and
water.

Why am I saying this? Possibly washing a filter this way could convey an
antistatic property, repelling instead of collecting dust.

Dr. Robb is correct - the dishwashing liquid and distilled water works for

Dawn dishwashing detergent is my favorite for filters I take of sunrises;

Hi Paul,

Like Bill suggested cleaning the lens with a gentle soap of some kind will
often get rid of the mark however you shouldn't really wet any filters other
than non-sandwiched simple glass filters and also you have to really rinse
them well as the soap will remain under the retainer ring/lip.

The other option is to use an optically safe lint free swab (like Chemtronics
Cottontips, let me know if you want to know where to get them locally)
dipped in isopropyl alcohol (pure stuff from the chemist not the rubbing type)
and clean in a spiral motion working your way out from the centre, rotating
the swab. You might also need to use a few swabs on the one filter surface
depending on how oily the mark is. Stubborn marks on lens coatings can be
removed the same way.

I'll be happy to sell you my mint condition, some never used, B+W
filters as i start replacing them with SMC Pentax filters. B+W
filters are not generally multi-coated, although, for lots of extra
$$, you can get MC filters. The Pentax filters are, IMO, far
superior to any filter I've used before. The skylights are
virtually invisible, even when viewed at an angle, and their light
transmission is superb. Prices are reasonable if you know where to
look. I bought mine through a shop in Canada

Try carbon black. Use only a very tiny amount with a tissue. If this doesn't
get it up, the coating may be etched. Sometimes we have a fair amount of
acid in our fingerprints.

By the way, I like the Hoya HMC filters when I use a filter. They make a
