Gone digital? I'm always looking for old Pentax film cameras and
lenses to fit Pentax, (either K-mount or M42 screwmount). Also have a
weakness for twin lens cameras.

Re: Is photography over?

2010-04-22 Thread David Parsons
I don't think that they really think that photography is over, they
aren't sure if it's really art. IMO, the fact that they are taking
the time to ask the question means that they are concerned about the
status of photography in their world.

Photography is many things to many people, and most of the time it
isn't art, no matter what we as photographers try to make ourselves
believe, and try to convince others. I consider it like architecture.
Most of it is functional, some is pleasing, and very few examples are
what you'd call art, but when a photograph becomes art, it transcends
the medium and becomes something beyond the original purpose.

Look at Vermeer's work. His paintings are in galleries, and he is one
of the masters, but he didn't set out to create masterpieces for us,
he was painting portraits on commission for paying clients. Perhaps
one day photography will have a legitimate place in the art world that
is widely recognized, it is way to early to say either way.

Re: Is photography over?

While on the topic of photography being over...

Allow me a moment to recommend a book to those of you who may enjoy a
diversion into photography's "roots".
"Primative Photography" by Alan Greene is one of the coolest books I
have seen in a while.
http://www.amazon.com/Primitive-Photography-Making-Cameras-Calotypes/dp/0240804619
Reader reviews:
http://www.amazon.com/Primitive-Photography-Making-Cameras-Calotypes/product-reviews/0240804619/

This is a guy who didn't want the knowledge of the originators of
photography to be lost, and so he has translated and rewritten the way
to make your own film holder (which could use photographic paper - of
your own making), your own sliding box or folding camera, your own
lenses for said camera, and then alternative processes (including a
milk serum method for which the by-product is an edible soft cheese).
I make is sound a lot weirder than it really is. It is wonderful
inspirational stuff. As Mr. Greene says: "The so-called optical flaws
of the lens can be put to great artistic effect". (I'm paraphrasing).

I find it wonderfully refreshing, especially with all of the obsessing
about the perfect lens and image we seem to do more of in this digital
age.
Or maybe I'm just sounding OLD.

Fascinating stuff, and great for it to be published. It's also very well
worthwhile revisiting old photographs from time to time. After visiting the
Izis exhibition in Paris last week I bought the catalogue and another book
called La Seine Des Photographes (Photographers' Seine) which contains
photos of the Seine from photographers ranging from the mid 19th century (eg
Gustav Le Gray) up to very recent years (eg Michael Kenna).

Some of the 19th century photography is stunning, and not well known to me.
Apart from the intrinsic interest of the subject matter, the quality of the
photography is very high indeed and often has a very modern look.

I don't know if it's so much a California thing as an "ART" thing. We
just ain't intellect-kewl enough to understand real artistic stuff, so
these guys have to simplify it for us peasants.

: Lady taking Tea, Jean-Siméon Chardin, 1735. “Photography's
: distinctive value lies more in its humble documentary function, its
: intimate examination and commemoration of everyday life, than it does
: in its obsolete technology. Think of the painterly attentiveness of
: Chardin as being more photographical in this regard than the photo
: wizardry of Moholy-Nagy or Man Ray.” – Blake Stimson.

So there you have it. You just got to understand that some old painting
is more photographical than actual photographs.

i thought it worth noting that i walked past the line for that very talk on my
way into SFMOMA Thursday evening; there (among other work) i saw one of the
most interesting surveys of photography i've seen ... Weston, Adams, Arbus,
Stieglitz, Larry Sultan, Dorothea Lange, William Eggleston and quite a few
other photographers, many of them contemporary; i'm really glad i saw the show

so while SFMOMA is posing that troubling question, it is also clearly deeply
committed to photography as art

That just shows that they're committed to photography as something to put on
the wall and draw the crowds. Personally I think art status is irrelevant,
but I suppose it gives the pointy heads something to talk about.
