I bought a couple of Sandisk Extreme III 2gb cards yesterday. I hope
they perform as well as the several 1gb cards I have, which have been
faultless. I don't use card readers, I download from the camera.

Good move. In truth, I've had better luck with this card than
the Extreme III 2 gig cards. No wiggling necessary to get the
card reader to lock onto it. I'm happy.

I will be watching the Sandisk cards I bought pretty closely. The Patriot
card that (apparently) failed had been used the week prior in the camera at
a wedding with no concerns, but I wasn't shooting rapid sequences either. At
the show, I was shooting bursts of 3-4 pictures, and suddenly the card
refused data.
It is nice going back to a fast card though, the Patriot class 6 cards are
very slow compared to the Extreme III cards.

Re: Memory Card Problem

2007-07-06 Thread Jack Davis
I began using a new card which was working fine for awhile. I did try
re-inserting it and it would not seat. Also, resisted being fully
inserted.
How can I tell if the card lock has been moved?

Thanks, Rob.

Not to me (yet) but I've read plenty of stories about cards surviving
washes (mainly CF though). My only suggestion is to check that the
card lock hasn't been accidentally moved to the lock position.

I think I now know what you meant by card lock. The protection tab on
the card its self? No, they are in the correct non-protective position
I was thinking of a mechanism within the card slot.

Yep, the bin is the best place for it.

Re: Memory Card Problem

2007-07-06 Thread Jack Davis
The problem I describe here is with a new card. I did leave the old
card in the bin, but wound up sending the K10D to Pentax Service this
PM.
I called and spoke with a person claiming to be a Pentax Tech, but got
almost nothing from her but a transfer to a return instructions
recording. I asked her if she had ever heard of this problem and got
the feeling she had already forgotten what I had told her..sigh.
I asked if I'd be reimbursed for the shipping (since under warranty)
and got a weak no. Had I chosen to return it to BH, my guess is that
I would have received a UPS shipping label back to BH, but after my
AF540 experience with Adorama, decided against it. (It got lost
somewhere between Adorama and Pentax Service and 'prox 2 month after I
sent it, I finally received a replacement).

Send a memory card through the wash, yes. Get said card stuck in the
camera afterwards, no. I recovered what I could off it, and didn't use
it afterwards.

RE: Memory Card Problem

2007-07-06 Thread Jack Davis
I really don't think it was the washed card that caused the problem.
After drying and being closely examining, I detected no warp or other
damage, checked it out in the camera and found that it worked just fine
both in recording and in loading/unloading.
When the problem began, I tried a new (never used) card and I
experienced the same problem with the slot operation.
In taking a close look at the well used card, I decided it had served
its time and trashed it.
I really believe the two events were just coincidence.
The camera is now under the control of UPS on its way to Pentax
Service...I miss it.

Re: Memory Card Problem

2007-07-06 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I think, Jack, that when the card got stuck you forced it out, which
probably wiped out the camera's card cage push-push latch mechanism.
How/why the card got stuck, I dunno. I've accidentally washed cards
twice, and both are still in service and working fine.

No matter, it will soon be fixed and back to you. It's just a camera
after all.
