Re: My first roll of film in a Pentax in decades
I think their scanner is especially crappy. I used to get better results with Kodak 800 color print film scanned with my Scanwit 2720s at 9mp from 35mm film with pretty much any coke bottle bottom I mounted on a Pentax camera. With a good lens much much better, I could easily get excellent 8 x 10 prints. It took a long time to get a DSLR that bettered those results, the *ist-D was on par at lower linear resolution, but it won out because it was so much more convenient. Well scanned 6x7 should blow you away with detail, even with a less than stellar lens. Yes, but the Spotmatic was an SLR, not a DSLR. That was my point. I purchased my Asahi Spotmatic in 1967. In 1964 my flight instructor managed a camera store in Madison, WI. He sold me a Honeywell branded Pentax H1a for $150 and I financed it at $10 a month. It was a real step up from my previous camera - an Argus C-3. -p On 7/19/2018 2:48 PM, Ken Waller wrote: I got my first SLR, an Asahi Pentax back in 1969 and they had been around for awhile then. -Original Message- From: "Daniel J. Re-reading this, I sound less friendly than I intended so I apologize. I guess that related to what I am trying to say is that if you have a nut to loosen there are multiple tools that might be employed to do the job (crescent wrench, open end wrench, box end wrench, combination wrench (using either the box or open end side), rachet wrench, nut driver, socket set, or even a vise grip. Which one you CAN use in any given situation is going to depend on things like how much space you have to operate in; and it is going to RESULT in things like how long it takes to get the job done (with some methods faster than others). I think photography is kind of the same way. The tool we use camera/format/sensor size/lens focal length/lens aperture/etc are all sort of like that choice of tools to loosen a nut. But sometimes we just look at all cameras as a hammer and then we look at every imagemaking opportunity as a nail. Thinking about what a particular camera/lens/sensor size/focal length/aperture brings to the final image (as opposed to using a different tool) is part of the challenge of getting better than average images. Re: My first roll of film in a Pentax in decades
You have to mean 2000 dpi. 200 dpi only gives you 450 x 550 on a 2-1/4 x 2-3/4 negative. I think people forget the original “purpose” or reason for larger format (film) a) it requires less enlargement for the same sized print (magnifying fewer of the physical film limitations, like grain) - so is better suited for prints that are going to be wall-sized enlargements. This is not going to be well seen (appreciated) if the display is on your monitor or typical web page display. b) people either forget or don’t know about how DOF is thinner, at equivalent apertures, all other things being equal. This made medium format especially great for portraits & weddings (closer focus photography vs infinity photography). This page well explains this and shows it in the SLOW sign photo, down the page: https://web.archive.org/web/20160819084802/http://silverbased.org/dof-vs-format/ So for example if you think the razor thin DOF of a 50mm f1.2 is great for a shot you can achieve the same look with the 6x7 105mm f2.4 (both wide open, obviously). Frankly, Larry, your choice of subject, focal distance, AND display would not show any of these advantages, even with the lens I mentioned. -- “The Earth is Art, The Photographer is only a Witness ” ― Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Earth from Above -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

It can produce outstanding results, if you are willing to put in the effort. Either it's worth the effort for you or it isn't. I've got another roll of Porta 400 loaded. Hopefully I'll get more than 7 frames out of it. I guess I must have exposed the start to room light because I only got 7 frames out of the roll, which is kind of rough for $30.
