Hi, Jens,

Those pictures look really nice! (both the pictures of the
camera and taken by the camera). I really should take some
more pictures with my arsenal of cameras so that I don't feel
guilty of gluttony.

Every time I look at the cameras, I can't help but group
the Aires, Beauty Lightomatic, Graflex Century 35NE (made by
Kowa), and Walz Envoy 35RF together. They look so similar to
me. Your 35III-A, being a fixed lens camera, is even closer to
the other three than the 35V. I guess their odd brand status
adds to the sense of resemblence. No, I'm not tempting you to
get the other three at all:-) The Aires is more solid than the
others, including the feel of the film advance lever. I don't
know about their respective lens performance (I shall get
them commissioned to take some pictures), but I heard words
that the Kominar lens on the Walz Envoy is quite nice.

Yefei

I have posted a few shots made with the Aires 35-III:

RE: OT: Aires 35 rangefinder

2007-01-08 Thread Jens Bladt
Hello Yefei
Thanks for responding.
I didn't know that the Aires 35-IIIs had changeble lenses until now.
I really enjoy using a rangefinder with manual settings. It's very quiet and
can be used at concerts, in the theatre etc. without attracting the same
amount of attention, that an SLR camera would. Most people don't even notice
that I am in fact taking pictures. I guess the Aires is a poor mans Leica
:-) Aries in fact died, I believe, because they didn't offer an SLR in time.
I wonder why Pentax never made a rangefinder with changeable lenses ?

It must have been nice to have the father teaching you darkroom technoques,
Bob :-) I didn't start until I got my first SLR in 1973.
The Viscount (french for count or similar) is quite nice - a bit newer
(1959-60) than the 35-series (1954) - according to Massimo Bertacchi.
I am looking for a 35-V with a built.in meter and interchangeable leaf
shutter lenses. I think four Coral lenses were made for this:1:3.5 /100mm, a
1:3.2/ 35mm and two 45mm lenses - 1:1.9 and 1:1.5. The V model was
introduced in 1958 - almost 50 yeas ago. I guess the company went belly up
in the early sixties. Unfortunately. The started making SLRs too late, I
guess.

I will be developing my first Aires film (Ilford FP4) shortly and hopefully
be able to post som scans too :-)

2007-01-03 Thread Jens Bladt
Wow, Yefei - and I thought that I had (too) many cameras :-)
Anyway - I don't have many cameras, that I don't use from time to time.
You are right - it's rather big, compared to cameras like the Kodak
Retinette, some Agfas etc.

But size is not much of an issue to me, since I dont' carry a camera while
doing other things (except maybe for a Minox GL, Olympus XA or Rollei 35
XF). Mostlly I only photograph when I'm out to photograph - and then I don't
care if it weighs 200 grams or 2000 grams :-)

What I like about it is the seemingly nice build quality and feel.
Everything works well, although it's the same age as me :-) What I don't
like is that the letters and figures are very hard to read off the shiny
surfaces.

I have mounted a small Sekonic Micro Clip-on meter in the flash shoe. It
seems to work fine. The only reason I don't carry it with me all the time is
that it doesn't have a built-in flash. So, the Olympus XA seem to have taken
that place :-)

I am still waiting to see my first film Aires film :-)

Jens,

I have an Aires 35 IIIs like Ralf's. I managed to get the
faster 45/1.5, the 90 and the 35 lenses from separate sources.
I feel it's the most solidly built Japanese leaf-shutter
rangefinder camera I have encountered. It is also very big,
especially compared to German ones. It's a shame I haven't
used it to take a single photo since I had it more than a year
ago. Mine has a misaligned rangefinder and I really should
have it fixed and use it. I guess when one has various cameras
from 30 different brands that have this and that problems,
they have to wait in queue to get fixed:-) In my case, Diax,
Akarex, Agfa, Regula, Voigtlaender, Pentacon, Icarex, Nikon,
Ricoh, Olympus, Konica, Topcon, had their priorities over the
poor Aires. But it will be in the line with my Beauty, Graflex,
Walz, Rolleiflex, Exakta, Pentax, Miranda, Edixa, Argus, Balda
cameras that are also patiently waiting for a check up. On
topic content -- my Spotmatic SPII is also on sick leave and
in the queue:-)

especially compared to German ones.

Any comments on these Japanese (Seiko) cameras?
