Hi Philip: we're deep in the Apple Ecosystem and enjoying it, though I admit
it took me a bit to make the adjustments--both hardware and software, but I'm a
stronger user now, and when I have to use Windows I absolutely hate it.

Have fun with your new system. It may be a little frustrating at first as you
make the transitition, but hang in there. It's really worth it.
Cheers, Christine

i know about tonymac86, but i had to learn about Unibeast; it sounds
like you want to preserve the installer for use on a non-Apple
machine (hackintosh); that should be irrelevant to your Mini, but as
you've introduced unexplained variables, it's hard to be sure

But do I need to use the USB drive to install OS X 10.9.2?

you can install it directly; that process will then delete the
installer, but you've got a backup, as i understand it, in the
Unibeast; otherwise i would suggest you make a simple backup of the
installer before running it; unless you have really fast internet
service

I got errors saying I had to enable Javascript to register. Does
Safari not have Javascript? I couldn't find anything useful in the
help, but that may be because I didn't know where to look.

Safari has JavaScript, and normally it's on, so i suspect you somehow
turned it off; the tonymac86 registration page uses JavaScript for a
captcha - do you see a Image Verification section without an image
- that would explain it

i'd just turn JavaScript back on; preferences for most applications
are in the application menu, which is on the left next to the Apple
menu, under the application name; command-comma is the keyboard
shortcut to preferences; if that doesn't work, perhaps your hosts
file is blocking some necessary JS?

I don't know how I would have turned it off. I didn't change any
preferences in Safari. I just opened it typed tonymacx86 in the
default search bar

The only things I've changed so far are the sleep time out which way
the scroll wheel on the mouse works (so it would scroll the same way I'm
used to on Windoze).

I haven't installed a hosts file on the Mac mini yet. Nor an anti-virus
program. Figured I'd take care of the necessary Apple updates first.

I could see the captcha when I clicked the get a new challenge
button it changed the captcha. So JavaScript must have been working.
Don't know why the error then, but I found a work around.

I've made a note to look at Safari's preferences.

built-in, sandboxed version of Flash (set to not auto-play) when needed;

i have heard that Flash for Safari is sandboxed as of OS X 10.9 (i'm on

(usually) switches to HTML5 playback when Flash is missing

My plan for the Mac mini is to minimize the amount of internet I do on
it. I have this computer for internet.

I do know that I'll have to use the internet to download the various
music software that came with the recording package.

Only one of the programs came on physical media - a USB key. It also
requires a different USB key to be plugged in when the program is used.

The rest of the software came as printed cards that give the website
an authentication key so you can download it. I don't think Safari's
voracious appetite will be a problem.

I finally moved over to my Windoze internet computer and used it to
register with the site and then went back to the Mac mini to log in and
download the app that makes the 8GB USB stick boot device. Still not
exactly sure what I need the USB stick boot device for, but I've got it
if I ever need it.

System Preferences under the Apple menu is your key to all global settings.
Within applications, you'll also find Preferences to set under the 2nd menu,
next one past the Apple menu.

yes 10.9 is free, whether as update or fresh install

the goto fail bug is *not* in 10.8.x (which your computer came with); it is in

they are built-in; if you don't use them, don't worry about it; FaceTime is
like Skype (voice and/or video) and iMessage is like text messaging or IM; on a

messaging tools only call others who have Apple Accounts, on Mac, iPhone or
iPad (on the phone it is integrated with the same app that does text messages,
and will switch between services automatically)

Thanks to everyone who responded. I got the sleep time thing fixed to my
satisfaction.

I downloaded OS X 10.9.2 and made the Unibeast 8GB USB backup.

But do I need to use the USB drive to install OS X 10.9.2?

Or can I install it straight from the download in the Applications
folder since I'm only doing the upgrade?

I used the Macs at school, but those were locked down pretty tightly, so
I don't have any experience with actually setting one up getting it up
to speed.

When I was trying to register with the site tonymacx86.com where they
have all the information about Unibeast making the USB backup, I tried
to use Safari to register with the site. I haven't tried to install any
other browser on it yet.

I got errors saying I had to enable Javascript to register. Does Safari

The easiest way to upgrade is to let the Software Update app (under
the Apple menu) do it for you. It's going to re-download the entire
installer again though.

I don't know if it's safe to install from the downloaded image

ReadMe's in the same place where you got the update image from.

Yes, it does, and it's particularly good (ie fast) too. Maybe it's
disabled? Look in Safari Preferences on the Security tab for the
Enable JavaScript tickbox.

If you can live with Safari's voracious appetite for RAM there's no
reason to install another browser. I can't though, so I use Chrome
