Yeah the 400F is NZ$27 here. 100F is NZ$20 a roll (so's E100S/SW/VS).

US$14, $10 respectively.

I am also quite fond of Provia 400F.  From the
couple of rolls I tried
out once, It has a nice palette.

There is one "feature" about 100F that may not be too well known. It's
exposure range is 1/4000 - 128 seconds WITHOUT any exposure compensation.
The feature of some tungsten film in a daylight emulsion - truly fantastic.

In addition, it is lower contrast with a wider latitude which makes it
perfect for scanning.

I find the price of this film simply outrageous. Here in Italy is about
10 Euro/USD (eh,eh) and 100F 105 Euros a 30' reel while the roll is
around 6-6,50.
If you consider the Sensia is currently sold in 3-pack for 10 Euro (3.33
apiece) the Pro solutions make sense only if you really need them.

Last lines: I have to say the first reel of 100F I shot really impressed
me. Good colors and not as saturated as the Sensia's one so it's good
even for people. Very fine grain (and I had some 20x30" made from a few
of my shots).

There is no comparsion. For landscape shots, everything just looks better on
Velvia.

Much less saturated. Probably on-par with Kodak's E100S (I use SW quite
a lot but have not tried plain S yet).

Fuji Provia F and Ektachrome 100VS are both more subtle than Velvia. Yet
both are quite saturated and brilliant. I prefer the Kodak.

Hi Dave,

I've been a Velvia user since its introduction. In the past the
results I could obtain from that film were not to my
expectations. More than excessively saturated, the colours were
unreal... I tink there was some kind of problem about its
compatibility with some processing labs.
Now I like it a lot and it's my film of choice when I travel.
What I still do not like about it is its excessive tendency to
let the shadows go completely black if you underexpose. It's not
the kind of film I like to use in a bright sunny day, even if
its speed makes this statement a sort of nonsense...
When I discovered the Provia 100F, though, I thought I had found
MY slide film. The colours are more 'real' and the contrast is a
lot more manageable. Its colour rendition is so neutral that
compared to the Velvia it seems a bit (a tiny bit) dull.
I use extensively the Provia 100F in 120 format, for paid
assignments, when I shot in mixed light conditions (I mean very
mixed: daylight plus flashlight plus neon light...): that's
where it is really unbeatable. I really like its ability to keep
a lot of detail in the shadows.

Hope this helps.

Re: OT: Fuji Provia 100F vs Velvia ? Comments ?

2002-06-29 Thread Bruce Dayton

David,

I lean toward the hater side, I suppose. Actually, it is more that I
think it is a great film when the colors lose saturation (usually due
to diffused or low light), to bring things back to normal. What I
don't like is when it is used when the colors are already saturated
and punchy. Then the results look too unreal. If you are a chrome
shooter, Velvia is one to keep in the bag and use when the situation
is right. Provia 100F or Agfa RSX 100 are both much better general
purpose films. I think you would really like both of them. Provia is
slightly lower contrast than RSX but great color. Try them both and
see if you can pick a clear winner for you.
